Chivalry - Why can't it die?

Postby S2M » Sat Feb 14, 2009 3:42 am

Now let me preface this by saying I don't mind doing these things, but what is the actual message this is sending to women? Women want to be viewed as equals, and yet we men(through guilt-ridden commercials and movie themes) are coerced into treating women like they can't do a damn thing for themselves...

Can a woman open a door for herself? She has two hands.....Unless her hands are full, she can open her own damn door.

Putting a brand new jacket over a puddle so she won't get her new $800 Manolos dirty/wet is just plain ludicrous. Unless she is crossing the fucking Rio Grande...she can walk around. Her calves could use the workout.

ok....I'm spent.

Someone ate a bowl of Bitter Bastard for breakfast...

Apparently you don't understand the point to being chivalrous. :P

Are gay men considered chivalrous?
Hmm.
If you ask me, sounds like some one around here is thinking about jumping the fence.

And went back for seconds, it seems.

S2M, I feel sorry for your lady. Did you ever think that maybe its a two way street and if you hold a door or open her car door once in awhile, she might be the type who notices those little nice gestures and makes sure she picks up the new dvd you mentioned wanting next time she's at the store, or whatever? Not all women are that demanding about car doors and puddles, you know, but the thought behind those things goes a long way. I'll leave you to your third bowl of Bitter Bastard now. Enjoy.

I am with Rhi on this one.....what's chewing your sphinkter today?

I don't think anyone expects their man to put a coat over a puddle any more.

But when Dan takes the time to open a door for me, and he does a lot, it is not because I expect it of him. It is a show of affection for me. He knows I can open a door.

I do nice things for him too. I think it should go both ways in a relationship. :D

Ging and Kim know what I mean... it's a double hinged door. Or as I like to say, "tit for tat". :P

He's just trying to bring you down today so when you get your Valentine gifts tomorrow, you'll appreciate them even more. Sort of like reverse psychology

I can open my own door. The point is: gentlemen are supposed to open the door, let a lady go first, etc. as a nice and polite gesture. I think the jacket over the puddle is a bit much but maybe offer your hand to guide her over it so she doesn't, I don't know, say trip and fall in or lose her balance like I probably would and fall in. Good manners seem to be rare these days. I live in a small country town and most of the times, you find gentlemen more so there than in the rushing of a city but for some reason in my town, a lot of the old men are just RUDE! They'd let a door slam in your face rather than open it for you and let you go through first. Strange. The young high school guys and men that are my age (38) are the ones that are true gentlemen there it seems. I learned by what I saw my dad do (and still does) and as I've grown older, notice it more now when someone is chivalrous or not. My guy goes overboard sometimes but I'd rather that than have a clod that doesn't know better or care.

That may be because the younger guys look at every single interaction with a woman as a potential opportunity to score (at least I did when I was younger).

Aren't we being a little dramatic today? I guess having to go get that Valentine's gift and card is putting you in a bad mood. What man has ever put his jacket over a puddle for a woman?

It's just now that I'm older, everything with two holes that I can pick up like a six pack doesn't automatically meet the criteria for banging material. Through years of experience, I've actually developed standards now. The bar is still set pretty low, mind you but I'm a little more selective than I used to be.

I like to do these things. I started dating someone new. We've gone out twice now. I open the car door for her, open the door to the restaurant and let her go first and I pull her chair out for her. But I doubt I'd ruin my jacket for her. She is very appreciative for what I'm doing for her. In return, for example, she paid for the drinks while we were waiting for our table.

With that being said, I can't remember the last time I've gotten a Valentine's Day gift for the woman I happened to have been dating at the time. Early on I've explained to them that I don't necessarily like to be told exactly when I should be buying them a gift. They've understood exactly my point of view. It's forced and it's fake. If I were a woman and received gifts on Valentine's Day, naturally I been very appreciative. But I would also be thinking in the back of my head that he was somewhat forced to do it.

Basically it lacks creativity and eliminates spontaneity. I would much rather give her something when she least expects it. Just something to let her know that I'm thinking about her, appreciate her and that she deserves it. Homemade gifts are personal favorite of mine.

i love the non verbal language, this small gestures can make a great difference for me..but goes in both ways, for men and women..i can surely open the door for a man or invite him to dinner..i've done in the past, indicates that you care about the person..anyway i love when a guy is very polite and kind with everyone, when he is with me..win extra points inmediatly! :)
