Pineda: From Shakey's to the Superbowl

I found this article online from the Philippine Daily Inquirer:

Pineda: From Shakey’s to Super Bowl

MANILA, Philippines—It’s been a long way—almost an improbable journey—from Shakey’s Cubao to America’s Super Bowl.

Arnel Pineda, the Manila-born singer whose first professional band performance took place in a pizza parlor in 1982, has scored a big touchdown for fans—and for Filipino pride.

Pineda on Sunday relished his dream role as lead vocalist of the American pop-rock band Journey with a high-profile gig in the pre-game entertainment program of the 43rd Super Bowl—the championship of the National Football League (NFL) in the United States—at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.

Beamed to over 230 countries, the annual sports spectacle is considered the most watched TV program in history.

Following Pineda’s Super Bowl performance, Journey is resuming its international tour which includes a concert in Manila on March 14 at the Fort Bonifacio open field in Taguig City.

“It was fun,” Pineda told Inquirer Entertainment through a text message on Monday night from Tampa.

“There was so much excitement already due to the game and we were there to warm up the crowd. It’s a big deal for me ‘cause (Bruce) Springsteen was also there.”

Some 70,000 people packed the stadium for the NFL finals that saw the Pittsburgh Steelers edging the Arizona Cardinals, with millions more cheering the battle on television. More than 148 million people in the United States alone watched last year’s Super Bowl on TV.

Journey’s guest stint was shown live on TV and, within a few hours, was ready for playback on the video-sharing website YouTube.

With superstars

Pineda fired up the crowd with the band’s 1981 hit “Don’t Stop Believing,” the same song that put Journey back into the limelight in 2007, when it supplied the soundtrack to the final scene of the US mob drama TV series “The Sopranos.”

He shared the pre-game stage with US recording stars, among them “American Idol” finalist Jennifer Hudson, who sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” in her first public appearance since the murder of her nephew, brother and mother.

R&B singer-songwriter John Legend also performed several numbers shortly before the game, country singer Faith Hill sang “America the Beautiful,” and superstar act Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band played four songs at halftime.

Pineda was only 15 and living a hard life in Manila when he auditioned as a singer for Ijos, a cover band that played regularly at Shakey’s Ali Mall and New Frontier theater in Cubao, Quezon City.

P35 per gig

Although the band members were impressed with his voice, they thought his timing was off and that polishing this raw talent would take a while.

But the band leader saw his potential and Pineda got the job. He was paid P35 per gig.

The stint with Ijos reached a high point in 1987, when the group joined the World Band Explosion in Budokan, Japan, and Pineda won the Best Vocalist award.

After joining other bands and helping form new ones that played the club circuit in Quezon City, Makati and Olongapo, Pineda went abroad and spent 13 years singing in Hong Kong, where he rose to become one of the highest paid entertainers.

Bowled over

By 2006 Pineda was back in Manila and playing at the Hard Rock Café with Zoo, a group he formed with Monet Cajipe, the band leader who first vouched for his talent on his first audition.

A year later Neal Schon, founding member and lead guitarist of Journey, was on the phone, convincing Pineda to try out as the band’s lead vocalist.

Schon—a highly esteemed alumnus of the group Santana and once invited by Eric Clapton to join his 1970s band Derek and the Dominos—was bowled over by what he saw on YouTube: Pineda singing note-for-note covers of rock classics, including hits by Led Zeppelin and Journey.

Pineda, incredulous at first, took a chance and flew to San Francisco to audition again—this time for one of the biggest selling and enduring bands in America.

The rest is history.

In June 2008, the latest Journey album “Revelation” was released, with Pineda singing in all 22 tracks—half of which were re-recorded versions of the band’s greatest hits. The album sold a million copies in just four months.

Following a 68-city tour that brought him around the United States, Europe and the United Kingdom, the Filipino rock star came home for the holidays last year and, straight from the airport, treated his family to a good time at SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City.

And for those wondering, I believe the exchange rate in '87 was 20 pesos per one dollar or less.
So AP was making less than two dollars a show, barely enough to buy rice and feed himself for the day. He's come a long way.

So he sang for about $1.75 per night?

Wow! That's dedication to your craft.

I'm sure Journey gave him at least $50.00 per night.

Nice to see in print, even though we know it only sold 500k. Point is, PLATINUM in "only" FOUR MONTHS!

They're probably counting two of the albums.

And it wasn't like everything was completely dirt cheap in the PI. He probably needed to make about 1,000 pesos a month to live decently. When you need a bachelors degree to be considered for a job at Jollibee or McDonald's, you can imagine how hard it was Arnel, a street urchin, to find work.

Pretty damn close to the peso rate back then Gunbot, I want to say 25P to the dollar though but it's close enough either way. I remember many of times getting a large pizza with at least three toppings and a pitcher of rootbeer at Shakey's all for only about $5.00 USD. However, in 87' each member of AMO was making way more then 35P per gig. 35P per gig was when Arnel first started out singing which was a number of years before 87' mind you. 35P was probably more US dollars in 82' through 85' compared to 87'.

Got to also take into consideration the cost of living over there. In 94' when I had my own apartment, I was paying a whopping $2.50 per month for electricity, and I was using the shit out of it back then when I had my keyboard and recording equipment going every night while composing music.

'Pineda's shaky Superbowl' would have been a better headline.

I'll go ahead and chalk up what I call a subpar performance to the type of show he was on but I just see it as too cheesey. What next, a live performance at ShoeMart? Anyway he got his through his freshman season alright but I'm expecting a steller effort this time from the whole group with at least 12 new songs (and I mean new as in never been sang by anyone before).

Gunbot, you're spot on. You correctly predicted the venue of Journey's next gig. Mall of Asia is also known as SM (Shoemart) Mall of Asia.

The VVIP (Platinum) is about $218, the VIP is $77. I think the exchange rate is around 45 - 47 pesos per dollar. Jess has the exchange rate posted in the concert thread on the AP site, but I can't access it at work since it is "social networking". :?

That's relatively cheap cause just the run of the mill tix in Japan are going between 8 and 9 thousand yen, which is $87.23 to $98.13 USD. Their going to make a killing in Japan cause tix went fast, which indicates one of two things, they were sold out quickly to fans who will attend, or, they were sold out to ticket booths that will resell the tix for on an average of two times the tix face value. It's a gamble, but in the Japanese economy, it's worth the chance. Plus if the tix don't sell, they most likely will then just bring their friends and family and get something out of the tix.

They're playing to around 15k total in Japan, traveling between three arenas. I would have thought the tickets would have cost a little more. Maybe they're getting a good cut of the earnings because it doesn't seem worth it to me.

8K yen for the "A" section and 9K yen for the "S" sections. These are the only tix that were available three weeks to a month ago. I'm sure those were the least desirable tix there are, and I would bet that they have already been sold out of those by now. I personally know a Japanese chick who works for a radio station in Japan and she's been filling me in on the info week by week pretty much via e-mail.

Tix on Philippines airlines shouldn't be more then say 1K round trip with the economy the way it is today, though you'll be in the cattle car portion of the plane but still not a big deal, just keep thinking of what's awaiting for you in the Philippines. :)

Here's a piece of advice, I learned this in the 80's myself when flying Philippine Airlines. They are a great bunch of folks running that airline for sure! I waited until the day my visa was expiring to jump on the plane back to the states and didn't notify the airlines when my return trip would be made, the return portion of the ticket was open which meant that I could use it anytime within a year of purchase. On the day I went to catch the flight back to the U.S., the ticket was good for about another month but my visa was expiring that very day. The plane was completely full except for a seat or two in Business/First Class. So they put my happy ass in First Class on the return trip and I didn't have to pay anything more then what I had already paid for with the coach class round trip. That was one fucking great flight! Enjoyed it even more since I didn't pay for that class.

So they put my happy ass in First Class on the return trip and I didn't have to pay anything more then what I had already paid for the coach class round trip. That was one fucking great flight! Enjoyed it even more since I didn't pay for that class.

The Houston market pretty much sucks for some reason, so it's looking more like $1100 - 1300 right now. :?

Shall we save you a seat? :D

Oh Yeah, right after you buy me an airline ticket!!! :D
Wouldn't that be fun?!?

It would be unbelievably awesome!
:D

Tix on Philippines airlines shouldn't be more say 1K round trip, though you'll be in the cattle car portion of the plane but still not a big deal, just keep thinking of what's awaiting for you in the Philippines.

No shit! That sucks, I think that's even more then JAL charges round trip in coach to Japan. Oh wait a minute....maybe it's cheaper where I am cause I just catch a flight directly at SFO. Anywhere else outside of CA and I think you have to catch a flight to SFO or LAX and then board the international flight. I see now.....extra connecting flight for most people.

Yep, that's where the problem lies. The Houston to Cali leg of the trip is grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr  .

PAL can be hit or miss. Delays, having to switch because of breakdowns etc. Do your self a favor and fly Cathay Pacific, an Airline that actually operates like it's in the 21st century. There's a layover at Hong Kong, but just extend it a few days and enjoy Disney Land. Even with the layover, it's a lot better than PAL.

Cathay has some nicely priced flights. It looks like they are who I will end up using, if we can get me back to Houston on the return trip. I'm hoping my agent will have some good news today.
