Outlaw Pete is an 8 minute EPIC. Such a great story and song.

Disagree Walrus. As Bruce himself said, "I'll put up the Rising, Magic and the new one against any three we have ever done." After Sunday's Halftime show, sales will be phenomenal.

No Ohio shows for Proggy. Need to go to Penn State, Hershey or Pittsburgh. This is just the opening leg with lots of dates to be added for multiple night shows.

Sorry, I have to disagree...just because it's 8 minutes doesn't make it EPIC. "Jungleland" is epic, but is almost like a movie contained in a 10 minute songs with all it's mood and musical changes...Outlaw Pete just kind of plods along for 8 minutes. The Kiss similarity, while probably accidental, is also pretty distracting (I mean, he couldn't have at least subconciously ripped off a GOOD Kiss song? )

Sorry man...I feel as passionately about Bruce as you do, but this one should've stayed in the vaults. The second half of the record is better than the first, but after his other amazing albums this decade, all of which I've loved immensely, this one is a huge letdown. Following The Rising and Magic with this would be like Journey following Escape with Generations.

I'm sure the shows will be awesome though...wish I had the money to go to one. Fucking going on a year of unemployment.

Having enjoyed Magic so much- and the bruce show I saw last year-and I'm back playing organ in a bruce tribute band- the outlaw pete Kiss embarrasses the hell out of me. Sure Radio Nowhere is kind of like Jenny- but it's different enough that can be enjoyed equally. It's not a big ripoff like Pete is. Here's what Bob Leftsetz has to say. I wonder too- how come nobody- especially the producer didn't say anything? How long before Gene and Paul sue?

There are similarities but I don't buy it. There's a lot more going on in this song than the "doo doo doo".

To quote another commenter:

Sorry no steal in this song, listen to it, you can hear the real influences, spaghetti westerns, Sergio Leone, and Ennio Morricone. This song is typical Bruce the imagery which he evokes from the lyric and the wail of 'Outlaw Pete, Can You Hear Me?' very similiar to the cry in Clint Eastwood's Pale Rider of 'preacher'. This is a mini movie - great!

Leftsetz's going for the low blow as he often does.

Springsteen and his people aren't stupid. For all we know, there may've been a deal in the background with Simmons so they could keep the "doo doo doo". Look at all the free publicity this album's getting 'cause of Pete.

What about the tolling bells at 05:30? Should Eastwood sue? He'll probably make a movie from the song instead.

I used to like Lefsetz a lot, but he goes way over the line too often for my tastes any more. He comes off so fuckin arrogant, and who the hell is he? What the hell has he ever done that's been so successful inside or outside the industry? It's a shame because he occasionally has great insights, but I barely can make it through the shit to get to them when they do come any more.

He was joking dude. At least I would hope so. Bruce has so many more quality songs/records and shows than Journey could ever hope for. They aren't comparable.

Music Review: Bruce Springsteen - Working on a Dream

While on tour for his excellent 2007 album Magic, Bruce Springsteen quickly realized the fabled E Street Band was playing some of the best shows of its career. Wanting to catch lightning in a bottle, he gathered the band together during breaks on the tour to record his next batch of songs. Those songs became Working on a Dream.

The album opens with “Outlaw Pete,” a sprawling eight-minute epic with western overtones, classic Springsteen harmonica, and a big, layered sound not unlike many of the songs on Magic. It’s classic Bruce and as good as anything he’s written.

“My Lucky Day” is an all-out rocker that would be at home on The River or Born in the U.S.A. The album’s first single, the title track, blends lush melodies over a chorus that would make Roy Orbison envious.

On “Queen of the Supermarket,” Springsteen longs for the attractive woman behind the checkout counter. It’s orchestrated ‘60s pop and sounds like classic ‘70s Bruce. While others may find the content creepy, we don’t know the age of the woman he is lusting for or the age of the protagonist in the song. It’s no worse than a mid-‘30s Brian Wilson writing “Roller Skating Child” at least.

The melody of “What Love Can Do” borrows from Fountains of Wayne’s “Amity Gardens” but veers into harder-rocking territory while “This Life” invokes Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound. “Tomorrow Never Knows,” not to be confused with the Beatles’ track of the same name, is an up-tempo country folk tune with fiddles. One could easily imagine Bob Dylan signing it.

The jangly guitars of “Surprise, Surprise” recall the Byrds at the height of their mid-‘60s powers, while “The Last Carnival” pays tribute to fallen bandmate Danny Federici, whose son Jason plays accordion on the track.

The album closes with a bonus track — the Golden Globe-winning title song from The Wrestler about a broken-down athlete in which Springsteen plays all the instruments.

Working on a Dream was produced by Brendan O’Brien, who also produced The Rising and Magic. As such, the albums all have a sense of continuity. O’Brien understands Springsteen’s vision and has brought out some of the best work of his career. Springsteen is at an age when most artists become oldies acts or simply fade away, yet Working on a Dream shows the Boss is as vital as ever.

Hate it when artists do that. Only playing TO (like it's the only big city in Canada  ), that's like only playing NY in the US. Bon Jovi ticked me off for years doing that, until they started hitting Vancouver and other Canadian cities again the last few years.

He is playing the obvious big cities and also the stops that were missed on the Magic Tour. My guess is the NBA and NHL are restricting certain stops- look where he is playing in LA? The Sports Arena. That place is a shithole. Why? Staples has three occupants already, Kings, Lakers and Clippers. Nokia is too small. If you look at dates though, there are gaps of 4,5 days here and there...Multiple dates to be added for sure, especially with an Album of the Year type tour.

Any rumours of Australia later in the year?

Not sure about Australia Ari. It's hitting my city early April and I can't wait to go! Hop a flight on over here and you can go with us! 8)

Only wish I could! Unfortunately study times and student income does not allow. However, fingers crossed and all going well, I'll be in the States for most of 2010 - maybe I'll be lucky and they'll tour next year too. Springsteen is one of those acts I've liked what I've heard, never bought an album, but always wanted to see live.

Like the music or not, both have reputations as fantastic showmen. I'd see both, and I wouldn't class myself as a fan of either (I like both men's music, just not enough to have gotten around to buying an album). I'd certainly be interested to get some reviews of the Springsteen shows from those who are going.

Bruce is more creative so its actually a discovery delving into his music. Bruce's great songs are anthems whereas Joel's are simply radio hits.

No choice here at all. I could go the rest of my life and never miss hearing a Billy Joel song again.

I like them both. Bruce has more deep cuts I'd like to hear, but Billy Joel's written some great songs too.

Well, my friend and I will report back how it goes at the show we attend. I am sure there are other board members that plan on seeing the show when it swings through their city and they will chime in with their reviews as well. I'm sure it will be terrific. :D

I certainly hope so. One of the problems of living on a continent with a fairly small population is that for a band to tour here, it gets expensive fast, so for foreign acts to come here they have to know they are going to sell out big time, and they tend to stick to the east coast. Springsteen is big enough to make it worth his while to come here, so I live in hope! But if I can't go, well, reviews are a great incentive to get to the States for a year
