Steve Perry - Once In A Lifetime

Postby cddanzig » Sat Feb 21, 2009 7:06 am

Once In A Lifetime, Girl by Steve Perry popped up on my player and I really like the song. One thing I noticed that bugs though: I just really can't get past the sound of him sucking in air during the chorus. <suck in> Baby, <suck In> Baby...

Anybody else bothered by this?

Other than that, I like most of Mr Perry's music catalog. Something different to talk about. :)

I noticed that a lot on the FTLOSM album, and it does bug me. I was wondering if some artists clean up the vocal track by eliminating that?

There's a shot in the original DSB video from Tokyo where on the last Chorus, he looks like he is about to suck in a big breath and then, the camera pans away. It's at the 4:01 mark of this video.

I hated it so much I quit listening. I caught myself gasping for breath. I gave FTLOSM another listening to just a few weeks ago and it's too bad as I really like most of the songs. It's especially bad with headphones on.

I've posted on this before...trying to figure out if he was looking for affect or what.

Agreed, it's all a part of the emoting to me. Maybe some (mainly guys) don't like it, but I like all the little "wooos" "waaas", grunts, groans, whatever. Especially live! Maybe that's why I like songs that have a motownish/r&b feel to them. :)

Both EM and JSS along with Perry adlib quite a bit especially live. Sue me, but I like those random vocal ooohs, aaahs, grunts, groans thrown into a song. Ever heard a live version of that bluesy song Voodoo Kiss? Good stuff! :)

As much as I LOVE Mother, Father the one part that bugged me was Perry singing "those ties-ah of blood-ah were strong"

So, I am working all day, I log on and it seams, mind you it just seems, we have a couple of what do you hate about Journey lead singers threads.

I like it when he does that. Steve has a sensuous voice and yes it is a bit R and B style. I love how we analize everything they do from their facial expressions to every sound they make. Journey needs to make a new album quick. The microscopes are out and next thing you know someone is going to compare their nose hairs.

 Ya, I prefer the grunts and groans, myself. :P LOL, but I meant more the sustained ohhhs and ahhhs in a song, like in Still They Ride.....like on "chasing thundaaaaaaaaaaaaaah". Or a song like Talisman's Back 2 The Feeling, JSS vocals reminds me a lot of the delivery on STR. :) Sorry I don't know any technical terms for vocals, all I know is all 3 excel in the vocal delivery I like.

Music's always been about feel for me, could care less how technically good any musician is. Kind of like with Paul Gilbert, he's great.....and he is a stellar player especially technically, but I like Kotzen's playing with Mr Big almost as much, he's more of a blues or feeling player, like Schon is.

Actually, that's the heart of the reason that I'm not as fond of the '80 - '83 era Perry. The "oohs" and "aahs" in moderation are fine and given Arnel's accent, tolerable. But when Perry did it, I found myself becoming irritated with his theatrics. His voice was enough that he didn't need to go overboard with the extended vowels after every lyric, but I felt he often did.
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'

How dare you come onto this forum and try to deceive these people?

Everyone here already knows that Steve Perry is superhuman and he doesn't breathe air. You cannot fool us.
