Getting tuned up I guess.

With all the news about SP doing a new record, which is yet to be seen, I've been giving his solo stuff a listen quite a bit. Which admittedly, I've got very limited experience with. I've always passed on it because I'm not into the softer side of music, so much.

But, and I may get flamed to death for this, I love it. Aside from Foolish Heart and Oh Sherrie, which have been played to death, his other stuff is really good. Like I need to tell you people this.

I made a statement about his song Against The Wall, saying he wasn't in good enough vocal condition when he did that one, but on a second or fifteenth listen, I get it. He didn't make a bad song that I can find. Maybe Summer of Luv. I even like that one a little.

I will admit it grudgingly, but I have finally started listening to ROR, TBF and SPGH+5. I've even elevated Arrival's status now that I've given it a few more listens.

Summer of Luv is one SP's best solo songs Rick! No shame in liking that one. Love those harmonies at the start. It's a fun song with a neat little 50s kinda beat I guess

Edit: I just realized how much this song would have fit into Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons catalog. I love this song

I think although ST is viewed as the best now, 100 years from now FTLOSM will stand out.

It's easily dismissed by knotheads like me as way too ballad-heavy but it's not really that at all, just dark and moody which is sometting I like. It's NOT a bunch of Foolish Hearts just have to listen for the timebombs laid there in 1994 by Perry and I'm sure the remaster helps if ever you could discern a difference that's one of the records you can. Plus you add Friends Of Mine to the mix the best song of the lot.

Yeah, that's the truth. I love those harmonies in You Better Wait. That SP sound. Magic. He sure knew how to make the most of what he had.

Yep, same vibe too.
Both started I guess in the Against The Wall sessions (per the notes the date on both is '88) but given they appeared on FTLOSM's reissue my guess (and maybe Cyndy can correct me) is he pulled both back down for work again in the FTLOSM sessions but opted to leave them off (not moody enough? Although I think Friends can be damn menacing if you listen)

He;s full of shit, I don't even think he's HEARD FTLOSM since the casset version he bought in July 94 disintegrated...he CLAIMS to like Street Talk only of the solo work but never upgraded that from his vinly he got in 85.

Missing you is my favorite SP solo song. I love it. He has some great songs on FTLOSM. Believe me, I love moody music. I love ColdPlay. But as a whole the album is missing something. It doesn't sustain my interest to listen to it from beginning to end. I end up hitting skip in places to get through it.

I always liked ST better than FTLOSM. However, I thought Perry's voice on ROR was starting to show some wear, and by the time TBF came around people were saying WTF was wrong with SP's voice. People couldn't understand why he couldn't sing in the same register as DSB or WCN. Some of my favorite SP vocals are on IBAWY, BGTY, GCHI, WCTNGOF, OTY, KOR, AWYWI, and SHML.

(I love it when people get into the heat of a Journey discussion and start using abbreviations.)
