Ipod

Postby Don » Tue Feb 24, 2009 2:02 pm

I'm finally moving on from my Samsung mp3 player and taking the Ipod plunge.
Is the Ipod classic dependable with it's hard drive based media or Should I go for the stable flash drive in the nano. And what about the Touch, is it just a pretty Iphone wannabe?

If you're a serious music fan, settle for no less than the biggest classic (120 gb is it now?).

I was thinking that but was concerned about the hardrive. Is it quick enough to not be noticable when you're searching for stuff?

I've heard that the Zune produces better sound if you hook it up to a stereo. At least that's what a friend of mine said after he did a comparison. I've yet to see (edit: HEAR) for myself, though.

I never have a problem... you can accelerate the scroll through the alphabet by letter too. So instead of cycling through all the As, Bs, and Cs to get to the Ds, you just scroll around real fast and it activates the letter-jump (don't know what it's really called) to jump straight to the Ds or something. 99% of the time the song will come on right after you click it. Mine (60 gb classic) is gonna turn 3 in May, gets plenty of use in the car and at the gym, and it's still going real strong. Honestly if you want to listen to a lot of music, you'll be disappointed with a Nano or a Touch.

The Touch is a gimmick for the fairweather 2 songs per artist music fan. I don't need my music player to do all that other shit at the expense of storage space and ease of use.

I'd definitely go with the flash memory device. Much, much less probability for failure. They require less battery power and are lighter and faster.

I haven't heard the Zune either. I've heard some similar sentiments though. I dunno, when I'm listening to MP3s on a portable medium, I'm already conceding the degradation in quality a bit. I got nice stereos and CDs when I'm in an audiophile mood. Maybe I'll look into the Zune when/if my iPod kicks it.

Very true. My Dad swears by his records for sound quality, and he's probably right. I think I was reading a Tom Scholz interview where he talked about how digital music strips away a ton of quality. Not much can be done, I guess. We certainly aren't going to start going backwards in terms of technology.

I've had both a Sandisk Sansa 16G(flash), and currently a 120G Ipod Classic....the Sansa would lock up all the time. I have yet to have a problem with the Ipod....plus it has alot of other cool features....I have over 2,000 songs on it, and have only used just under 10G.....

Vinyl really does sound the best. But truthfully, a 192 MP3 on a good system still sounds plenty good for my needs.

I want one I can jog with but I want one with a lot of space. How is the classic as a jogging device?

Get one of those arm band things to wear around your upper arm and you'll be fine. I take mine to the gym to lift/bike all the time. I wouldn't suggest holding it in your hand and jogging, as that would shake the player up a lot more than having it on your arm and relatively stabilized. Remember, hard drives have moving parts. Even so, you'd probably be fine, but better safe than sorry. Plus the arm band is just comfortable/convenient.

The classic it is then. My kid works at Bestbuy So I'll see what kind of discount he can get out of his boss, usually the item magically becomes an open box item when he asks for a discount.

I don't think you'll be disappointed. I got my little sister a new classic for Christmas after investigating the Touch. She's not as into music as I am or anything, but she listens to enough different shit that even the biggest Touch woulda been too small for her. She said she wasn't interested in all the little bells and whistles anyway. As a big music fan, it just makes no sense: You pay more for less. No thanks!

Unless you have a LOT of music and videos, a Nano should be fine. They're a lot less cumbersome.

But I don't think the Classic is slow.

Those are freakin cool. Especially the Iphone. They've got some hilarious apps for those things you can download. The people at Apple have a great sense of humor. The only thing I don't like about them is that you can't change the battery. Never could figure that out.

Yep...It's an iPhone without the crappy AT&T Service! Try this VERY cool device from Best Buy http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp ... 8015456941 . I own one and it blows the iPod away (For the record, I own an iPod touch, and iPod video, and two nanos). All the music is free and there is no music to load onto the player. Very cool device. I'm listening to far more music since I picked it up.
