Same Old Same Old 80's Bands On Tour Again

Postby Voyager » Fri Feb 27, 2009 7:49 am

Damn. It seems like the same 80's bands tour over and over and over. Styx, Journey, REO, .38 Special, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Def Leppard, Cheap Trick, Poison, Motley Crue, Rush, Sammy Hagar, Van Halen, etc. I have seen these bands so many times that I am no longer excited when I hear about them coming to town again. It seems like they put on a tour every year! (Well, I guess when band members hit the age of 60 they'd better put on as many as they can.)

How about some more breakout concert tours like The Police and Van Halen/DLR did? I'm sick of seeing/hearing the same old faces playing the same old tunes. I know there has to be more than a dozen of these bands out there that could put a tour together.

Can you think of any good 80's bands that could tour and haven't?

Triumph reunited and is starting a world tour this summer after 20 years of bad feelings and sniping through lawyers - it gives me a glimmer of hope for a Steve Perry/Journey reunion. I hope I get to see Triumph this summer!

If you could pick the best members of the different 80s groups and put together a quintessential lineup in one rock band, who would you choose?

Why would people be sick and tired of 80s band touring? After all thats when the real music was created :)
Id rather see these old farts touring than go see any of the new generation crappy shows.

One band from the 80s that Id like to see tour again soon is Europe. Last they were here in US (04/05) they rocked hard.
Next time, I hope they work a deal to open for a bigger band , like WhiteSnake, or like they did in 88, tour with Leppard,,,,

Not "80's bands" in general, but rather, the same old same old 80's bands. I mean, I've seen Styx like 11 fucking times, and REO at least 10 times. They come to town every year! Where are the 80's bands that haven't yet toured in the new millenium?

:(

P.S. - I like your sig with Alizee dry-humping - LOL!

I'd like to see Night Ranger and Huey Lewis tour more. Seems like they only come to the Houston area when they are part of a big festival and they only end up playing for maybe 45 minutes.

I guess there just isn't that big of a demand for them. I've seen Night Ranger 3 times and it seems like the crowd never really gets that into them. A shame really, I think they've put out some good tunes.

It looks like Huey Lewis and the News have a few tour dates this year and they are supposed to be at a festival called Rock Jam in Grand Junction, Colorado this September. The website lists the lineup from last year and included acts like Dokken, Survivor, and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. It seems like a lot of 80s acts aren't doing their own tours as much as they are playing festivals.

I'd be excited to see Styx again IF they put out a new album of all new material. Without that, well, I've already seen them a bunch. Or if Shaw Blades made it to my neck of the woods, I'd be there.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

Christ, there's more complaints on this board lately than at an early-morning geriatric pancake breakfast. Why would you complain about bands you like (I presume some of you like at least some of these bands) are working hard and bustin their asses comin around to play for us? No one's forcing you to go see them if you've had your fill! When it comes to seeing some of my faves, I'm gonna go see 'em every time unless I got something I can't get out of. Who knows how many more times I'll get to see Neal play guitar or whatever.

I do agree, I'd love to see more of bands like Night Ranger, World Stage, Survivor, and Huey Lewis. But hey, maybe they just don't want to upset people by delivering too much product

The real music was created in the 80's! You've got to be kidding. I guess the Stones, The Who, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Journey, the Beatles, the Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, and countless other no talent groups were just garage bands in the 60's and 70's HUH! :P :P :P :P

All kinds of excellent music to come out of all three decades, for sure. I think the 70s were my favorite just because of the sheer variety of genres and styles that were all popular and performed well in that decade.

Agreed. There were some wonderful talented artists and excellent music to come out of all three decades. But for my money, the 70's were the peak. There is a reason so many musicians from that era are considered legends today.

I don't mind seeing them over and over again. I mean they are the ones who usually created the music, came up with a melody, wrote lyrics or music. I think the original people that gave you those memories should be rewarded. Where singing is a god given attribute, the rest of the process, making, writing, creating music is an actual talent that must be learned and crafted IMO. I don't mind paying homage to the creators.

I am tiring of the same ol bands, comprised mainly of fill-in members playing the same old song list.

I think it is time for the remaining band members of the old supergroups to get together and play their old band's songs. There could be some great all-star bands. How about Schon, Shaw, Blades, Castronovo (because of vocal abilities) otherwise Todd Sucherman & keyboardist of choice (Cain, Rolie, or Roger Boyd-Head East). Play three hours of Journey, Styx, Night Ranger, Damn Yankees, Head East.

Head East??? ...just seeing if anyone else digs Head East. :)

That's a personal opinion. Sure many bands including the ones you mentioned started in the 70s. But in my opinion they created a lot if crappy music and didn't develop to better bands till early 80s.
Beatles ?! Lmao. The stones ?! Get real. Both overrated bands with more garbage than any dumpster could handle.
80s was the most important part of music history. Simply because it gave a lot of the 70s bands the exposure and fame they needed while at the same time that many many new bands were born and built the backbone of the great catalog of MELODIC ROCK .
Check out the title of this topic too. Funny how it says 80s bands ;).

Is this a done deal then? Are they for sure reunited and going to tour? Hell to the ya if they are! Yet one more "must see" reunion for me. And at least they'll probably play out west! Great to hear, but not sure I'd travel too far to see a show, on the other hand would travel to see these great talents and killer vocals/harmonies again. Don't want to miss out the second time around. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1MahZfFFFY

Now, if I could just get JSS, Mr Big and Triumph all on one bill......oh heck, throw April Wine in there too.

Yes, you're right it is my personal opinion.

I'm perfectly capable of reading, and I understand that you were referring to 80's bands. I get it OK. I just don't agree with your statement that "real music" was only created in the 80's. I agree that the 80's was the peak for the development of melodic rock.

I guess I just don't limit my music appreciation to just one genre of rock. To say that bands like the Beatles and Stones were overated IMO is just plain asinine.

This is what frustrates me: Instead of looking at the upcoming summer concert tour schedules and seeing seven or eight 80's bands that I haven't seen in decades, all I am seeing are the same old wornout bands that have been touring year after year after year. It would be nice to see something different for a change.

I never said I limited my music to one genre
I enjoy anything from Beethoven and Bach and vivaldi up to recent bands like Avenged Sevenfold , rage against , protest the heroes and many other bands. I like all kind if genres except for rap and country

I respect your opinion. It's just Beatles and Stones never did anything for me.

Who would have guessed? Surely that pic of Kevin Cronin in your avatar would have never given it away.

But seriously - you wouldn't get tired of seeing REO a dozen times in a 10-year span?

Well, then call out the lazy guys who aren't gettin bookings, not the ones who have managed to stay relevant enough and kept their fans interested enough to get booked year after year.

Fair enough :D

I would guess that there is probably an age difference here. You need to understand, when I first heard the Beatles and the Stones it was like hearing music from another planet :!: They looked different and they sure as hell sounded different. It was a life changing experience for people of my generation.

But that's the fun of this forum, we get to share our love for and sometimes argue about something we all love rock music. :D
