ROCK IT - 2008 Reader's Poll

The popular German Melodic Rock magazine ROCK IT has recently revealed the winners of the 2008 Reader's Poll.
The winner in the "Album of the Year 2008" category was JOURNEY's last studio opus "Revelation"
who won the competition against such artists as AC/DC, Whitesnake, Avantasia and several others. Honorable mention goes also to BOB CATLEY's "Immortal" which arrived at the 7th place and WHITE LION's "Return of the Pride" at 9th. JOURNEY also won the award for the "Best Story of the Year" and for the "Best song on the Sampler CD" for "Never Walk Away". Congratulations to the band and a big thank you to all the fans who voted JOURNEY and all Frontiers Records artists in the poll.

and the same folks inserts same boring and often irrelevant arguments against Revelations here....

It's better than most of the rock out there today, so I think it's a good thing. I would've thought the same if it was a good album by anybody. Loverboy actually had a good album out this year too.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

You're right. I'm only rolling my eyes because I'd hardly give it best of the YEAR.
Best of the week it came out, maybe. But not the winner of 2008.

as far as that type of music, I'd say Journey, Shaw Blades, and the Loverboy album. i liked the Springfield album a lot too, but not sure it fits into the same bag. I guess it does...

I gave it a 7. Not as good as Arrival, but better than Generations.
I grew tired of it pretty quickly though and moved on. Disc one and the DVD are now the property of one of my pinoy coworkers (seeing as Walmart doesn't care enough to even keep it in stock anymore), while Disc two is being used as part of my bird feeder assembly in the back yard.

Vocally? Yes.

Revelation has NWA, CFtB, WD, AATY, TDtWT, WIN, WDILYL. LaS, FitH, and WITTW aren't that good. Arrival has HP, AtW, SoL, TBAL, NCC, WGW, WWMA, and IGaR, with the rest being a total snooze fest. So Revelation gets the nod for me, but Arrival's best can compete with Revelation's. I just haven't heard why people dislike Revelation or think its overrated or whatever.

I mean, to be quite honest, Gunbot, I don't think your comments have led me to believe that you like Revelation at all, much less giving it a 7. It's sure as fuck better than Black Ice, which redefines the word putrid.

hmmmmm, I will have to go back and listen to them back to back. From purely a vocal standpoint, for me it is b/c of Arnel's voice. Steve Augeri's voice doesn't grab me like Steve Perry's and Arnel's vocals do. But as far as songs, I don't know. Musically, there's a lot of songs I really, really love on Arrival and really do like Steve Augeri's delivery on all the songs. Kiss Me Softly is one of my all-time favorites hands down. I'll have to get back to you on that, GB.

I gave it a seven when it came out, there's a thread somewhere. The problem is after a month or so I found myself starting to hit the skip button more and more when one of it's tracks come up. I did the same when Arrival came out but now I appreciate it more because I realize that i initially judged it with a bias slant because of my high regard for SP. Maybe 5 years from now Revelation will grow on me again but I don't know. Shit, it took me twenty years to give ROR a second chance.

I'll be the first to admit that Revelation wasn't as nearly as impressive as I had dreamed it would be. The production is outstanding, but some of the mixing issues -- Arnel's voice subduing the rest of the band and the backing vocals being shitty -- took it down a couple of notches. And the album, while up tempo predominantly, doesn't rock nearly as much. And the inclusion of FitH is inexcusable; "Let It Take You Back" would have been a much better choice.

The production, like TBF is top notch. It's just the songs themselves that are hard to keep in your head. NWA to me is the worse produced one but has the catchiest hooks. Just nothing that really stands out, besides TDTWT, which is probably so appealing because it actually sounds different from most Journey ballads and Arnel really delivers it without any hint of Perryisms in his voice.

I don't really detect a lot of Perryisms in either Arnel or Augeri. They have certain qualities in common: the tenor voice and a similar tone, but I've listened to Journey so much that it's easily detectable who's who and I see their individual voices as being worlds apart.

Besides, those "Perryisms" were ripped off from Sam Cooke.

I don't listen to Sam Cooke though and Perry didn't replace him in Journey.
