Steve Perry and Vibrato

Postby Vladan » Sat Mar 07, 2009 5:24 pm

Hi all, it only occurred to me recently. Steve Perry and the use of "vibrato" using it wisely, if at all. Only The Young, Perry's version compared to Arnel's version is an interesting listen. Unlike a lot of other singers, Perry and Lou Gramm, two singers who time their songs to perfection in my opinion. Another singer who is just as good as those two, is John Farnham, but because mostly Americans probably read this board, Perry and Gramm are my examples.

What are peoples thoughts on Perry and his singing techniques, the timing when to use vibrato, and when not too put all your eggs in one basket such as the likes of Don Dokken. And what sets Perry and Gramm a part from their Peers?

Too much is overkill.............Perry seems to have great control...........The man's voice is strong, controlled, and beautiful.

I love Mariah Carreys voice, but find she has a tendency to over use the vibrato, and lilts, sometimes to the detriment of a song. Sometimes less is more. :D

Perry is THE benchmark for proper vibrato. Too much and you sound like an old lady singing. Too little and you sound bland. Proper use is limited on each word and mainly on the end of a phrase. Perry's control of the vibrato is simply amazing. Jeremey from frontiers suffers from too much vibrato occasionally, if he could nail that..wow.

Perry's vibrato is impressive; there's a particular instance that springs to mind at the end of "Sweet and Simple", where he sings "sweet as sugar, sugar, sugar" and it comes off as sublime.
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'

The lyrics are terrible, but it is a vocal masterpiece.

Egads! No! No, sir/ma'am. That coveted title belongs to "Why Can't This Night Go On Forever", which is enough to induce orgasm even in the straightest of men!

But "Something to Hide" is a fantastic song in its own right. Shame Perry's voice is criminally neglected in the public spectacle.

To me, the "Benchmark" of the Perry Vibrato is "Sandcastles".

Straight tone on the word "dreams" - and the "tags" the vibrato at the end of the held word.
MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF CONTROL to do that!

Not only that....but the Vibrato starts out on a slow cycle, and gets faster.

Sorry! That song is a music lesson in control and Perry's voice makes it perfection. The last note is his most beautiful of any of his songs, imo. WCTNGOF is amazing and I never understood why it never made it as a greatest hits.

Has Perry ever performed "Something to Hide" live?

Perry is just pure perfection. The guy knows when to draw out notes and use his vibrato in the right time. He also knows when not to use to much vibrato. Arnel seems to overkill some of the songs a bit and then comes short on some others when compared to Perry. No one can come close to how Perry's was able to use his voice.

.......and vibrato queen. Love the contrast/mix of Ronnie's and Eddie's vocals on this one. :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbhXmSBlS_U

I love Perry's vibrato. Lots, but not too much like Texafana posted, and no vibrato is very boring to me.

Reminds me a little of Perry/Rollie's vocal contrasts back in the day. :)

Perry's post-83 vibrato sets the standard. To have rasp and vibrato is something special. Songs like After The Fall, Strung Out and I'll Be Alright Without Your Ass" are absolutely incredible. Great depth and control.

Couldn't agree more! And love those 3 songs. I just love it when my faves sing motown/r&b, their vibrato comes out more.

Those songs are simply superb. I do have to admit that, with the exception of When You Love A Woman, a lot of that magical vibrato seemed to be gone circa TBF and he began to sound a bit "hollow"...if that makes any sense. But If He Should Break Your Heart is still my favorite TBF song and I'm not afraid to admit it (though I probably should be here  ).

"I'll Be Alright Without Your Ass"?

IHSBYH is my favorite Journey song period.
