although i started to become a journey music fan when pineda was hired by the band.
since then ive listened to a lot of perry clips that i can find on youtube.
and there are tons of them out there. God bless those people who posted them.
i envy a lot of you guys out there who were able to hear journey live back in the days of escape.
well i know its not fair to dissect a vocal performance through youtube, but i gotta say this:
pineda is way out of perry's league when it comes to vocal technique.
im no expert so i even dont know if that sounded correctly.
but what i meant was, although pineda can channel perry's voice, the latter seems light years away in terms of, umm, everything.
i know that comparing the two is stupid. and will be very unfair for arnel and/or might even be deemed as blasphemous to perry loons.
but maybe, just maybe, someone agrees with me here that with some top notch vocal coaching, arnel can somehow come close to how perry was back in those days.
what is frustrating for me though is that pineda just couldnt somehow hone the raw talent that he has to satisfy my ear buds.
my dream for this band is that somehow, pineda, with the help of some divine intervention, be able to learn that vocal technique perry has/had (whatever).
then myself and everyone for that matter, can be pampered (again) with that journey sound that i know neal/jon cain has been trying for a decade to recapture.
and i still hope that the next album they say they are making, be far greater than that forgettable record of a Revelation.
wishful thinking? shoot me.

Forget the accent: I'm talking about breathing, the hard terminal "T"s to his words, and slurring.
That's before we even get outside of his 'power' deliveries.
It's frustrating as heck.

i agree that he does justice to that catalog, but as journey fans, i think we deserve new and better music in the future right? (assuming they dont replace pineda)

You should A) go get drug tested right now, and B) be suspended from MR for insane idiocy. No one destroys Perry in anything. Seriously, you ever see Perry live? There is no comparison between the two, on any fucking songs, period. You were probably the guy on Youtube that made the remark about "Perry never got Journey to the Super Bowl, but Arnel did in his first year."
Come on folks, Arnel is a great story and a great guy, but he is also fresh. Perry hasn't been around in 22 years and still commands this Board's fullest attention.

Or they could just pay another Gap employee to lip-synch the Steve Perry vocal tracks from the studio recordings.

Oh c'mon and take a joke. They did pay a Gap employee, and he did lip-synch. Why is my bringing that up "not cool"? It happened, didn't it?
I agree with Gideon on this one. I heard Arnel's version of OA 7 times last year and I'd say that 5 of them were better than the doctored 81 Houston DVD version. I also think he sings Only The Young better (not a huge accolade considering Perry could never really sing this one live). He also wins When You Love A Woman by default, but that could change this year. The rest Perry wins easily.Rockindeano wrote:Gideon wrote:

Dude, how much longer you think this band has on Earth? They are old and lazy. They can't last much longer, especially the time needed for Pineda to "become Steve Perry."
