As much as I despise and flat out hate Journey, this is actually respectful, or at least a step in the right direction. The set could still be a lot better, if they would ever drop fuckin Open Arms and maybe, just maybe, include a song from ROR or God forbid TBF.
So they are getting better, perhaps growing some stones, but they are still very small stones.
Why would they play anything off TBF? Its dull and nobody knows any of it...and isn't post-perry. It doesn't meet any criteria of a song that this lineup would, could or should sing. It would be a waste. They need to play the classics and new stuff...there is no room for TBF. Message of Love fell flat on its face in 2001, no sense to whip that dog out ever again.
As far as ROR...they play BGTY.......they should play I'll be alright too...but the rest of that sounds dated and isn't well known either.
Dude, TBF is one of their best efforts. It has mellow, moderate and harder songs, probably more eclectic than any cd they have ever made. It's just a mature album that's all.
As for being dated, hate to tell you this, but Revelation, from the three songs I have heard, sounds really dated.
Its 13 years old, people know the songs on it less than they even know post-perry stuff....and it doesn't work in live settings. Mature it is indeed, but despite my many disagreements with this band on things, this isn't one of them. I couldn't agree more.
Well, when TBF came out, Journey was basically irrelevant in 1996, but those songs on that album are a helluva lot more recognizeable and better mind you, than anything off of Arrival, Generations or Revelations.
Can't Tame the Lion, MOL, and One More are all better rock songs than Higher Place, anything off Generations and Rev.
The thing that really makes songs like MOL and OM better than anything off anything post-perry, is Steve Smith. And since SP's voice really lost most of its power, he had to take a step down and let the other members of Journey really shine, Steve and Neal in particular. Emoting schmemoting really isn't what Journey rised to fame on - it was Perry's insane tenor/mezzo soprano voice, and as sad as it is, he lacked that voice all together on Trial by Fire.
