OT: U2 - No Line On The Horizon

Postby fightingilliniJRNY » Wed Mar 04, 2009 2:16 pm

Anybody pick this up today? Thoughts?

I'm digging it so far. No Line On The Horizon, Magnificent, I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight and Breathe are my favorites so far. They announce their stadium tour on Monday, so hopefully I'll be able to actually get a ticket to one of the shows. Should be epic.

Probably the first good thing I've heard about it. I'll probably balk for now.

Journey should open for them this summer. Wouldn't that bring back some fond memories?

Just performed Magnificent tonight on Letterman. Loved it. I hope to have it by tomorrow, and I will give my opinion. But from what I've heard of the songs or samples so far, I like the mood of the songs. I love Breathe also.

I'll but tickets to the tour if they promise to play no more than two songs from the new album.

Just kidding, but I don't have any hopes for the new album. If it generates some airplay, great. Otherwise I would be happy to see them play their former catalog again. I've only seen them once (2005) and it was great.

Bands like The Police and U2 don't need new albums to sellout tours, because they don't tour every year.

This is the first album since Pop where I'm not digging what I'm hearing, at least at first listen. Might be a 'grower' but so far, it's not hitting me in my happy place.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

Third night, Letterman: If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight. I really loved that song also, especially live.

Magnificent sounded, well, not bad.

Haven't heard the whole thing. Didn't like the boots song much, hoping they've changed up their sound a bit. I'm ready for something new from them.

Even though Pineda was tapped as a Perry high note reacher, his differences are actually a welcome addition to Revs imo.

Change can sometimes be good.

Yeah...even Zooropa, their least 'poppy' album still had solid choruses and hooks...this one just kind of goes on and on searching for choruses it never finds. U2 will always be my favorite (active) band, but I'm pretty underwhelmed with this one, even after spending a couple weeks with it.

I got this last week...played it a few times and love it...Once again, they tweak and do different things.

It's different than the last 2 cds (which I liked very much)

Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, Steve Lillywhite producing ....

I know some folks will hack on it because it's different or that some folks don't like change, but for me, this cd was a welcome surprise.

I loved Zooropa and Pop, so i have no problem with them being 'different.' But the songs...just weak songwriting. No amount of Eno-ing can mask mediocre songs.

Won't be picking it up either. Never got into U2. Bono's arrogance always got on my nerves. Even with all the screaming obsessed U2 fans, I always felt like Bono's biggest fan was Bono himself.

U2 was on Good Morning America this morning. They were absolutely dreadful. Bono asked everyone to come along in their new direction...crowd was not into it at all.

I downloaded it the day it came out and was disappointed. There are maybe 2 or 3 good songs on it. The rest are either crap or only mediocre.

I did a fairly extensive write-up on it on my blog....partly for my own sanity, perhaps to try to process in a more organized way, everything I was feeling about it...if anyone's curious.

I love U2 but I would have to go with Zepplin, followed by Aerosmith for that award.

Sorry Jimbo. Moose has you by the balls here. Journey isn't half the band U2 is. Having said that, this latest release is a bit weak. Bruce just won album of the year. I was waiting to see how strong U2 would be, but am not concerned now. Journey are playing movie theatres and U2 is playing hockey arenas. Hmm.

I really enjoyed your review. Nice to read one from a longtime fan. I've only listened to the CD straight through twice. I'm going to reserve judgment until a few more listens to see if some of the songs I find lacking grow on me. I agree with you about no hooks.
