Re: Perry's Unreleased "Against the Wall" Album

We are all aware that somewhere between the time Columbia/Sony released Perry's "Street Talk" LP and the time they released Perry's "FTLOSM" CD, there was a middle body of work: "Against the Wall". For whatever reason (depending on whose story you listen to) the album was never released, however, Perry "sprinkled" some of the tracks throughout other compilations.

Question: Assuming -- and I know that is a dangerous thing to do-- but assuming the those tracks were the strongest tracks from the "Against the Wall" album, do you think Columbia/Sony inadvertently did Perry a HUGE favor by not releasing the album? IMO none of those tracks were strong enough to make successful outing. Perry was reportedly unhappy with the decision, but, was it better to not release the album than to have a full-fledged clunker on your hands?

"Against the Wall" -- the song itself, anyways -- was terrible, in my opinion. It was during the era when I thought Perry's tone and shit were pitch perfect, but he seemed to labor under the delusion that he was back in 1979 rather than 1989; he lost a lot of easy access to the higher end of the spectrum in his voice, and the shrieks made my family and I flinch when we heard it.
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'

I suppose, out of curiosity, we'd all like to hear the complete finished work, but, from the tracks released so far I'm not that impressed - and I'm a LOON!! :?

Fuck me !! I love the album. The title track kicks ass to me and Melody is an awesome song. There are a few skip tracks for me on that one but for the most part I think they should have released it. Remember, it only takes one song to propel an album even if the rest is filler. There are some filler tracks on there but I think with the right track order it is a strong record. Love the drumming too however the 80's keyboard sounds used on certain songs sounds very dated. I would love to hear melody with the 80's keys removed and a more modern approach.

That's some of my favorite material on the Greatest Hits package. I think it would have done very well for the time it would have been released ('89/'90-ish?). While not as heavy as the glam metal music that was happening then (Poison, Bon Jovi, Motley Crüe, etc..), it would have scored with the mainstream pop music crowd (Phil Collins, Billy Ocean, Steve Windwood, Richard Marx).

From the songs I've heard from that "album", I think it would've bombed.

I loved the songs, and he did release two CD's to his fans in the SPIN fan club before he released them to the public. I love all the songs for different reasons.

"Forever Right or Wrong (Love is Like A River)" is one of my favorite songs. I really liked all the songs from the GH's CD that was from "Against The Wall" except "Melody". I know from the earlier post that alot of you like it, but it just didn't do anything for me. But the rest of the songs I love. I would love to hear the whole CD.

If it had been released I think it would have done really well. Can't Stop would have made a great first single from the album.

People have put them on Youtube I am sure.

One album Is titled: You better Wait: Songs: You Better Wait (long version), Forever Right or Wrong (loves like a River),
If You need me call me, One more time, and you better wait (single version)

the other album titled:Missing you:, songs:, Missing You, Melody, What Was, It won't be you, and Missing you (writing version) the last one he messes up during the beginning of the song and cracks up and acts funny.

You must remember this was before all of the greatest hits and added releases. I am glad to have another version of Melody. Now I don't have to be so careful with the new one, because it is availiable. Before the one he released to SPIN members was not availiable to the public.

AND I LOVE the song MELODY! :D

Could have been a big hit!

I like the version of Melody that's on the Missing You CD Single. I like how the concept is abstract. Is Melody a woman? The melody of the song? Take it as you wish. That's why Seal never includes his lyrics with his CD. He wants you to interpret the song as you hear it.
BTW - the two CD singles were available to the public. I bought the Medicine single at Sam Goody before I read it was available in SPIN and the Missing You single at Tower after I saw the SPIN advertisement.
