Um, I don't think the return of a 60-year old former pop band singer (which is how most music fans view him and Journey) would generate much buzz, other than among hardcore Journey fans and loons. I would be one of the first ones to buy it, but it would probably sell a lot less than Revelation did. Especially since Perry could never get a Wal-Mart deal like that.

And I have the solution to that....DUETS. Steve sings a CD of duets...possibly even with some of the recent AI winners. You want to sell CDs, that's what ya gotta do. Carrie Underwood, David Cook, maybe an R&B with Jordin Sparks, Daughtry.....and then a few with some of his peers; Ann Wilson, Stevie Nicks, Sass Jordan, Sir Paul, Sir Elton, Phil Collins, Billy Joel...etc.....even I'D buy that.....

Yeah, but Perry has this thing called integrity...

Oh, so people who sing duets lack integrity? WOW, that's a great working theory NIG....doesn't transfer well in application however.

If the reason for the duet is just to sell records or to revive a moribund career, I am sure Perry would not do it. If the reason is because he likes and respect the artist, that's different.

True.

Honestly, not to emulate SJ here, but the only reason I can think of for him to not release the material he's been working on is insecurity. I won't dispute whether or not the man can still sing, but I think we can all agree that it won't be as technically astounding nor as easy as it used to be. I have no doubt that his voice is still pleasant and full of that emotive quality, but I do believe Perry operates under the mindset that if he can't do it like the '70s, he can't do it at all.

It's a pity.

Yes, I agree.

And, to add to Gideon, I have always thought once Perry's voice dropped to a more mature level he would accommodate the R&B sound he emulated when he was younger. Personally, I would like that.

Duets don't lack integrity...loved his duet with Kenny Loggins! SP and JSS or SA might be interesting.

Now if he did a duet with Britney to get noticed, I'd barf!

Yup, worked like a charm. Carlos used the popularity of others to gain relevance again. Perry won't be doing that, even if he can still sing.

And you better stop rolling your eyes or they'll stick like that.

When the heck is there going to be a "Journey Night" on American Idol? Here Randy Jackson was a stand in musician for Journey on the ROR tour and still no Journey night or performance of any kind. I dont get it!

Probably because Perry would be the guy they would want on the show, and he obviously does not want to or can't perform anymore.

hmm... I kinda disagree...

Really this comes down to quality of product and marketability, to which Perrys' name and legend lend themselves very well.

"buzz" is generated by two things... great music and a boatload of money. Its really all about how much money any given label (or artist) wants to spend putting themselves on the map... we've all heard or seen artists who became huge with the help of major marketing, only to quickly fade away, because they couldn't consistently create great music.

So really all that needs to happen is 2 things:

1. Perry would have to record some amazing stuff.
We all know he's easily capable of this, and he apparently has already done so (according to Nuno Bettencort).

2. A marketing deal (with a major label, or retailer, or both)
I actually think this is the EASY part. Perry's "brand" is intact... a little aged, but that voice is easily identifiable... especially by the 16 year old kids that lived the Perry era who are now in their 40's ... and represent the largest buying demographic.

Prime targets for a new Perry CD.

A 2004 study by the Pew Project bears this out:

Buyers of CD's
Ages 18-35------ 43%
Ages 36-50------ 65%
Age 51+--------- 77%

Perry is a "known" commodity, albeit a bit removed from his marketable prime. He has a built in loon fan base AND a casual fanbase that only need hear his voice to remember his name, and demographically the timing is right.... IMHO the risks in a label, retailer or both supporting this are minimal... at the least they are break even. At a minimum its EASIER to re-market Perry than it ever was to market Journey... as many on this board have stated repeatedly... to the casual fan, Perry is identified as Journey...

My original opinion that Perry is simply anxious about "stepping into the whirlwind again" make sense... hell Perry himself says repeatedly that "he thinks of performing all the time"... its most likely all the other crap that goes along with it (radio, press, etc.) that he'd be anxious about.

I don't go to concerts anymore so it's kind of a moot point with me.

After paying other band members, stadiums, road crew, managers, promoters, etc., is it worth it for SP to do a grueling tour when (according to some) he has plenty of money.

I don't think that it would be entirely worth seeing him in concert if his performance on the album isn't up to par. He should wait until he receives the sales figures before making this decision.

I don't think SP would do much, if any touring... maybe only major cities...

Most acts tour because that's the only way they really make money (merchandising, percentage of tickets, etc..). Journey tours because, well Neals a road-dog... its all he's ever known.. and we've all heard how many wives Neal has... ;)

Most likely a Perry CD would be about promotion, airplay on AC (Adult Contemporory) stations, and maybe even a video (for those 40 something housewives..) for the AC video channels..

Then as Deacon says... based on sales... they could think about touring...

Do you REALLY think Perry' name is Legend? I think people think of him solely as the singer of Joureny. But casually, it's more like 'that guy from Journey?'

ok so remove the word "legend" if you don't agree... I don't see how that changes the context of my post. Perry's voice is still the most recognizable, and most associated with the band by the casual fan. Having Pineda SING songs previously sung and made famous by Perry only re-inforces that notion...

And it isn't like we're seeing marketing for the current lineup using the word "legendary" now to describe the band, or Schon, Cain or Valory individually ... so in terms of a Perry "comeback"... describing him as the "legendary guy from Journey"... (if that works for you) ... STILL makes more sense...

I feel a speculation thread and angry exchanges coming on......................shortly....... :D

Nevertheless, besides my Doctorate of Law, I have an undergraduate degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Marketing and I agree that with American Idol being such a top rated show with
everyone watching, that any debut that Perry makes on it on "Journey night" would be the kind of audience and HOME RUN that Perry would want for his new album. He would become an overnight sensation for those young people who did not know him from before, and for the rest of us........... it would be a glorious day and a blessing from on high........... :D We know he met with Randy Jackson and that Randy heard him sing. I'm sure that Randy didn't hear Steve sing at LUNCH........ there had to be another setting for Randy to make his own assessment for the debut on American Idol........ Wouldn't that have been the purpose for him SINGING for Randy.....? I think it is a GREAT idea if that is what is being planned.......... Perry wouldn't have to tour, he could become involved with American Idol, a voice coach, helping young people achieve their own dreams.... I can really see Perry enjoying this and at the same time, coming back into the music world under his OWN TERMS........... I hope what you know Madsplash is correct. I really do............. :D

The problem with having a Journey night is that Steve Perry sang all of their best music and as we know only so well, is so closely identified with them that anyone trying to sing those songs would probably sound like crap. Unless you can hit those notes and and deliver them with the same intensity and emotion it could be disasterous. It would probably sound like karaoke night at the local bar.
