They already made their marks on the charts and in the memories of people like me who were in High School and attending the Escape and Frontiers concerts. I have Escape on 8-track, cd, sacd and Mini-disc. Perry's voice is the only one I will associate with those songs. You younger peeps like Gideon are in a different boat altogether. Since it wasn't new when you initially heard it, I don't think you can completely understand the attachment to it that some of us have it when it first came out, When the videos were on MTV every day and you couldn't wait to hear the next release on the radio.
It's probably the same for people who discovered Journey when Augeri came on board. To them, it doesn't matter if he was the weaker singer amongst the three, he is one attached to their memories so he will be preferred by them most of the time. It's just the way it is.
I know there are some here who will say they have been fans since the 70's and it's all about the music and not the singer and that's fine.
I don't roll that way though, and never will. I will judge each of them by their own original material and that's that. I don't care who wrote what or any of that. It's about which version I heard first and have had embedded into my subconscious. I'm not going to change the soundtrack of my life because the group changed singers, not as long as I can have the version I grew up with available to me.

I have only met Gunbot once, but from what I saw he seems quiet and thoughtful. I love it when quiet, thoughtful people like Gunbot speak with volume and depth. Case in point, the above-mentioned.

Of course this could never be me as I tend to say what I mean even if it is wrong and I've put my foot in my mouth so often I can give myself a pedicure with my teeth! :P

Really?!?!? He's usually pretty outspoken around here!!
LOVE this post, G~boy...just love it!!!

Oh, "outspoken"? Well, okay cool. But, I don't know him, I have a lot of reading on this forum to do before I can somewhat understand you all! I will state that I am impressed with how folks speak their minds regardless of PC or no PC. A lot of you MR folks say what you feel which I find nice. Be back later or tomorrow. Have a great evening Miss Michigan Girl! :)

Eh, this a community, Deano ... a virtual one, but a community nonetheless; one that needs all its members to stay healthy. If a group of people meet a church, they don't only talk about religion; if they meet regularly at the same bar, all the conversation does not revolve around drink; if people meet at a school, after you get past "what's your major" and which instructors suck, talk turns to other things. Journey is the loosely organizing principle here, but much of what is fun and interesting is only tangentially (if at all) related to the band.

Kind of a cool place, if you think about it. The HWIC is in Oz; the server's in Florida; the fans are on all continents except Antartica. We've got precocious kids ditching AP homework, grandparents, hot young things, midlife crises aplenty, men women, rabid conservatives, flaming liberals, insiders to the music industry, people who only just found out Journey has more songs than DSB, folks who meet up at dozens of shows a year, hermits, folks we aren't sure are real, hockey nuts, NASCAR aficionados, football fans of all stripes, rock stars with their own bands who are also major Loons, all sorts of races and religions....

Relevance is all a matter of perspective ... :D

Yeah, right up until JOURNEY comes to your town to play and you get a huge boner and can't stop yourself from coming....to the concert.

Actually, you just made a whole lot of sense. If I absolutely hated a band, I probably would just leave the site be and let the fans enjoy themselves. Fact is, I'm loving Journey almost as much as ever right now and for as long as it lasts I'm gonna just enjoy going to some shows and listening to the music.

Great post. Very well put.

I've only recently found this forum and although I'm not that into post-Perry Journey I find myself coming back every day. I really enjoy reading what others have to say, the variety of topics and getting to know everyone.

DrFU, great post. I agree completely. But I also wonder if Deano might see that it is ridiculous the near celebrity status he has acheived on this site. Look how many posts there were by others about HOW DEANO WOULD RESPOND!! He no longer needs to post anything because everyone else will do it for him! Deano has been a major contributor to this site, he has brought a lot of insight, piss & vinegar, traffic (which means dollars to Andrew), etc. He is a valued member of the board. As is every other poster on here. But this board can/has/will survive without him as well. Why do some people spend so much of their time concerned with Deano's presence?

Thankee ...

That's the way social groups work. Members play different roles at different times depending on group dynamics ... stars, jesters, curmudgeons, grasshoppers, flirts, flamers, sages, peacemakers, grammarians, Schutt-stirrers, snipers, cynics, Pollyannas, encyclopedias, and so on and so forth.

I wasn't saying the community wouldn't make it without any one particular member; the point I wanted to make was that the best asset of this place is the regular contributions made by (and interactions among) its stunningly diverse membership, whatever anyone's feelings about past/present/future incarnations of the band Journey might be...

I know. I was simply pointing out that many seem to react that way whenever Deano leaves for a while. It is sad to watch many posters start floundering around like there is nothing to say or do because Deano is not here. Deano is a great guy and certainly brings a lot to this board. I was only wondering if his self-evaluation might have been brought on by the way the thread was carrying on "about" him without him.

Uh, didn't think this was still a strictly Journey forum myself...seems like it's become more of a free-for-all forum nowadays.

I was a big Journey music fan when it wasn't "cool" to like them. The current line-up is okay but nothing "special" to me.

I think Steve Perry's voice probably is as great today as any other singer on the planet who records today. Never got all the guys saying SP's voice had to sound so high to be good 'cause that's not what made me a fan.

And, yes, I have ulterior motives being here. If some gameplayers can go all Truman or Where's Waldo on me, I can go Carrie on them!

Something would have been leaked by now.

If it ever happens, the L.A. Stations will be all over it. Los Angeles is Steve Perry and Classic Journey territory, and considering the size of the market here, that's a good thing for SP.

So true. Trial by Fire was one of Perry's greatest performances and his voice had been badly deteriorating.

Uhhhhhhh.............I was joking about Deano...........not a person waiting on his every word. While I agree with DrFU's take on this forum, sometimes people jest with other members as a joke. Done completely with respect for the member of course, I bear no ill will to RD. I did not mean to bring on this deep analysis. RD my appologies if I made you feel uncomfortable. But it was done in the same manor as I do joking with SW2, Rick, Rhi, or anyone else. :? :?

I am siting here and have finally realized; I have absolutely no reason to post here. Seriously, why post on a band's site when you have nothing nice to say about them, and frankly, hate their collective asses? I finally got the memo.

We talk about relevancy here lately. If anyone has lost MR relevancy, it's me!

Well, except Deano used to be the preacher here leading the congregation in a variety of ways. What should a Journey preacher do when he no longer believes Journey is all-powerful and is in fact very much the opposite?
