UK fans Support the cause - get Manilow replaced on BBC R2

Postby pdsidd » Tue Mar 24, 2009 6:08 am

Hi All
First post for a while. If like me you're unfortunate enough to have to listen to Radio2 in the morning you'll no doubt have been subjected to the rather turgid cover of 'Open Arms' by Barry Manilow. It's hideous and listeners aren't aware that there's a version a million times better available. I've sent an email to radio 2 but it needs a more sustained barrage to get the orginal Journey track some well-deserved airplay. I've heard it mainly on Terry Wogan's show so it seems sensible to contact his show rather than any other. The link to contact the show is http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/shows/wogan/contact.shtml

Support the cause - request the original 'Open Arms' by Journey not the lifeless Manilow cover!!

Many thanks for reading!

Even the original versions is gay, look who wrote the music.Barry has as much right to sing it as Friaga did to write it. Its a cheesy song, what the hell

I believe Mariah Carey did a cover of Open Arms. It was butchered by contestants on Pop Idol. :(

Me neither. I can't stand Whitney Houston's voice even more. Bunch of whining & moaning like their tampon is stuck or something.

LMAO!!

You do realize that is the job of a tampon though... to be stuck. Otherwise they don't work.

If you have to go the female issue reference route, you could say "whining and moaning like the Kotex is sticky side up..."

(ha! did I ruin lunch? )

Hate her all you want but Whitney was pure gold back in the 80's. I think Nick Lowe appreciates her. He wrote a song called "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding". It did alright when it was originally released with Elvis Costello on vocals, and years later, Curtis Stigers decided to cover it for the Bodyguard Soundtrack. That album, fueled by Whitney's cover of "I will always love you" went on to sell 17 million copies in the U.S. alone, subsequently making Nick Lowe independently wealthy off of the song writing royalties for his old tune.

Obviously, it pays to be a song writer sometimes.

That song "I Will Always Love You" is like nails on a chalkboard for me. Some classic moaning on that tune.

Looks like Barry would rather be one of the show girls than sing about them. LOL

Are you serious about the hammer pants & headband   I'd pay money to see a picture of that. LOL

Jeez...mix one part Elvis with an equal part of Liberace with just a dash of Neil Diamond. Bake at 350 and you have this picture.

Those pictures of Barry are painful to look at. I'll bet Barry turned Lib's dirt chute into his own personal meat locker in the 70's.

Been listening and apparently Barry is getting a LOT of airplay with Open Arms in the Queen's realm, look for it to be on the British Billboard Charts if it is not already.

I'm starting to see a vague resemblance here.

I only just heard it and I'm not too fond of his version.

Didn't like Mariah's either.

And good luck with trying to get Sir Terry Wogan to play Journey.
I can't see that ever happening.
