Good call, GB. I saw Rik not too long ago and you're 100% correct. Rik is still a bit better all around, though.

Fabulous! Thanks. Just slays me that he can deliver vocally like that from behind a drum kit. Guy is definitely multi-talented!

But JSS owns that one, after Perry of course. :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDtHpo3I5vc

I agree. This is just one of those (many) song where, to paraphrase a quote used regarding another singer: Once SMFP sings a song, it stays SUNG! I liked JSS's version much better than Deens. Still, nobody else can ever "own" this song - not for me anyway.

I can understand the band handing off a few songs to Deen to save Arnel's voice, but it just seems to me they're just using Deen's song's as some sort of "throw away" or filler, or intermission between acts of the real show. It's a little unsettling to think "Still They Ride" and "I'll Be Alright Without You" are just being used to kill time while Arnel recuperates. :?

Deen is a great singer and is an asset to the show in that way. He got used to doing a few songs a concert and enjoyed it for several years. When Arnel came on, he didn't. He missed it, but said that was all right. I loved him on Mother Father and a few others. That song wasn't representative of how good he usually does. The bad sound didn't help. So with two-hour concerts they're letting him sing a couple songs. I'm glad. But, I agree, this song didn't do anything for me, unless it was the sound, and with a better tape I might change my mind.

Expecting Arnel to sing Perry songs through 3 very radical stages of voice changes/degradation is crazy. Letting Deen sing a few songs is a treat and, most importantly, the responsible thing to do.

Deen does a GREAT job...and no fat ass Randy Jackson in pink spandex, a polka dot bass and flat top either!! It's WIN WIN!

Though for my tastes I prefer Jeff to Deen...nothing against Deen at all...I just think Jeff has a better voice for it...IMO.

I know you're biased, but I have to laugh when I hear that RJ is a better bass player than Ross. No fucking way. Who played on all those early kick-ass jam oriented albums again? Oh yeah, and Escape and Frontiers? RJ is a good bassist but he aint better than Valory.

Randy Jackson is an incredible musician...I won't take anything away from him...Ross is just as good...but he has played in Journey where the bass player doesn't get many props...my beef with RJ is his wardrobe back in the day!!!

GOOD GOD! Between him and Cain it looked like Flock of Seagulls was performing Journey tunes!

I used that phrase, because IMO he does it the best justice next to Perry. He's got great soulful delivery on it.

It feels so empty without Perry. It's like someone other than Robert Plant singing Stairway To Heaven. As good as Deen does on it, I can't fully appreciate it because it's just too much of a Perry song.

Not bad, Augeri did it pretty good. Didn't like Deen's version, lacked the energy, pretty much from the entire band, it sounded like a song you would hear in an elevator, boring + 1. Listen to the way Perry sings that song LIVE, unmatched in every department, he was the king. Love to hear Arnel tear it up as well.

That'll be great, but it will HAVE to be Deen. Arnel can't touch that song. No way. He'll end up off on the side of the stage, having a coughing attack.

Perry's voice had too much rasp for Arnel's still very clear tenor to sing now.

Well, that's right, but his voice had that rasp because he was using it that way. On the ROR tour, there are many youtube performances where SP tenor is still VERY clear. As we've said, the tempos were faster but he's still very clear here, actually as clear as ever. He has the ability to sing either way, raspier or clear. Well, he did at that time.

It was a night to night thing back then. I have a bootleg where he sounds great at the beginning of the show and terrible at the end. I guess it depended if he had his "vitamin B-12" shot that night or not.  But to counter your claim, his rasp was a casualty of vices and too much touring, not by "choice." I'll agree that he could turn it "on" or "off" to a certain extent, but not the way you're making it sound.

This is too low for Deen considering its a half step down from the original. He has little power in his lower range. No clue why Arnel isnt singing this one. Maybe Deen loves the song and requested singing it. IMHO its a big song for them and this is not the song to use if your going to shift the focus to Deen.

I think playing the older material 1/2 step down is ok but doing the new material like this sounds shitty. Charge for the butter sounds like its dragging.

I think the rasp was mostly used for effect at that time, when he wanted to. Now by the time FTLOSM happened, I think it was the only way he was able to sing, which was still freakin' fantastic.

What's weird is that the last thing we've heard him sing was I Stand Alone in 1998 and his voice sounds clearer on that, than on any of the TBF stuff. The guys pipes are an enigma, and there is at least one more chapter coming. Who knows what the hell to expect from him now. He may come out and blast through Homeade Love. Some of things I've heard say that he may damn well almost be able to. Maybe he'll sing nothing higher than on TBF or even lower, which would be cool beacuse of his technical skill, control and tone.

Gonna be interesting.

Diminished tenor range or not it can not be disputed that he is one of the most intelligent singers ever. What I mean by intelligent is how he retools the songs to suit his comfort zone all while maintaining the same magic that made it special in the 1st place. Also, if you listen closely to some of the boots from this tour you can hear how he might shift to a higher note or move around the scale a bit if a long note hold doesnt go "as planned". He adapts in microseconds and keeps the magic coming intact.. Another often overlooked aspect that makes him 1 in a billion.

What's funny about that to ya, Jana? Too much rasp, too much control, too much emotion, to much texture, too much power? Which one? All of those for SP, are things Arnel can't now and can never be able to do 1/10th as well.

Oh, and too much clarity of being able to speak the language and use diction that I can understand.

There's Perry and there's Perry-Lite.

That is as well put as it could be and I agree 150%. It's comical to me, that some think that because the range is slightly diminished, that he "can't sing anymore" or is "finished". That's silly and short sighted thinking.

I usually like Deen's voice - especially on the track on Generations - but this version of I'll Be Alright Without You really is insipid...

Looking at this clip and that recent Superbowl effort...I have to say that the band are sounding very tired now.
