Train songs

Postby StoneCold » Fri Apr 03, 2009 12:04 am

I searched but didn't see a thread about this so let's go. Any songs you can think of about trains or life on the rails (doesn't need "train" in the title).

Good add X.

Land Of Hope And Dreams

Grab your ticket and your suitcase
Thunder's rolling down the tracks
You don't know where you're goin'
But you know you won't be back
Darlin' if you're weary
Lay your head upon my chest
We'll take what we can carry
And we'll leave the rest

Big Wheels rolling through fields
Where sunlight streams
Meet me in a land of hope and dreams

I will provide for you
And I'll stand by your side
You'll need a good companion for
This part of the ride
Leave behind your sorrows
Let this day be the last
Tomorrow there'll be sunshine
And all this darkness past

Big wheels roll through fields
Where sunlight streams
Meet me in a land of hope and dreams

This train
Carries saints and sinners
This train
Carries losers and winners
This Train
Carries whores and gamblers
This Train
Carries lost souls
This Train
Dreams will not be thwarted
This Train
Faith will be rewarded
This Train
Hear the steel wheels singin'
This Train
Bells of freedom ringin'
This Train
Carries broken-hearted
This Train
Thieves and sweet souls departed
This Train
Carries fools and kings
This Train
All aboard

This Train
Dreams will not be thwarted
This Train
Faith will be rewarded
This Train
Hear the steel wheels singin'
This Train

Thanks, dude. It's one of my favorites. Even if you aren't a Boss fan, I don't see how people could not like what it says. And I LOVE the way the band breaks into "People Get Ready" at the end. Beautiful!

This was really good.

Interesting to hear the voices backing Perry, hard to figure out who's who. From the info:

It was recorded in one day in October 1978 at the Automat Studios in San Francisco. Featuring guests: the Tower Of Power Horn Section, Tom Johnston of the Doobie Brothers and Annie Sampson & Jo Baker of Stoneground.

Journey doesn't count. The TV show used the song as its theme.

But this might be one of the most-covered songs of all time...

From Wiki: "Harry Belafonte, The Brothers Four, Burl Ives, The Limeliters, Johnny Mann Singers, Johnny Rivers, Paul Evans, Big Joe Turner, Creedence Clearwater Revival, ABBA, Mungo Jerry, Van Morrison, Odetta, D.O.A., Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, Little Richard, Buckwheat Zydeco, Mischief Brew, Josh White, Pete Seeger, The Kingston Trio, The Spencer Davis Group, Eric Clapton and Paul McCartney among many others have covered the song."

Arlo Guthrie - 'City of New Orleans'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfxoM6trtZE
Why treat life as a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in an attractive & well-preserved body? Get there by skidding in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand, chocolate in the other, body totally worn out, screaming WOOHOO! What a ride!

What the fuck inspired this thread? Just curious.

City of New Orleans has to be the best overall train song, even though it's not written by Arlo Guthrie, but Steve Goodman. The City runs 926 miles from Chicago to NO. Boring fuckin ride. Tracks lined by trees the majority of the way. Goes fast but there isn't a fucking single thing to do except drink and count the telephone poles, or if you have a sleeper, plug the old lady every hour or so.

Illinois peeps will remember this. 10 years ago, in Kankanee, Il, some lazy, tired fat sonofabitch truck driver, carrying steel, pulled into the path of the southbound City, traveling at 76 mph, killing 16 people. Most of the dead were kids taking their first train trip ever. That fucker got a citation and 3 months probation, but later committed suicide because the guilt basically killed his spirit.

Land of Hope and Dreams is so well written, and the meaning is such, I don't think I've ever heard better lyrics in any song, however, the majority here will hate it, because it is written in a liberal vain; you know, that inclusion bullshit, and fairness to blacks, kings, whore's and gamblers.

(note to X- this song is in the 6 song encore this tour)

Bruce also has Downbound Train from BITUSA.

How about Johnny Cash and all his choo choo tunes?

DSB has a train in it's story line.

Also, I will be on a train Sunday. I am going to write "St John loves Springsteen" on the mirror in the shitter. Maybe go to another bathroom and write, "Tito wants to make love to Clarence." Also, maybe a "Friga is a hopeless homosexual" for stevew2.

I will definitely photograph, and send em to you Kim.

Deano I dont know why you think i live in the mountains. I live on flat land near the Cheasapeak Bay, the pic posted here is 5 miles from house.I hate to disappoint you but ive never have been on a train. Always wanted to though. The closest thing to me getting action on a train is when the the ole lady gave me a hand job behind an old cabbose, a long time ago.

Dude, delete this picture. We all have this mondset, that you are a cast member of Deliverance. That banjo player you had was classic. I am keeping the hillbilly image, so fuck you. :) Image
