The Appalachian range is the term for the entire range of mountains extending from Georgia to Canada (or Maine, if you want to keep this a national thing). Mountain ranges are within the Appalachian range include the Addirondacks, the Catskills, the Blue Ridge range, the Smokeys, etc.

It's like saying the referring to the Rockies, while trying to describe people only specific to the Sierra Nevadas or the pacific northwest.

So while correctly stating that the Addirondacks dont acurately indicate buck-toothed, backwoods, fuck-your-cousin, mason-jar-moonshining, hicks.....the Appalachian word doesn't accurately do it either. I would think that the most correct term would be to refer to the Blue Ridge or Piedmont ranges gets the point across.
