Are you fucking serious???? Seriously, lay off the crack pipe, and get off your kness from in front of the journey alter. Journey's been more commercially successful - that's about it. Musically, Kansas is so far ahead of Journey is is quite laughable. Friga wishes he had 1/10 of Livgren's songwriting capability.
At the crossroads Journey chose to be commercially successful, they 'sold out', if you will....Kansas changed their sound when the main songwriter(Walsh also wrote, but his songs basically sucked) left to write more christian music.....Kansas never cared about hit songs or charting # 1s.
Songwriting? Man, that is the funniest, and saddest thing I've read in awhile.....

I've gotta agree with Dan on this...I saw them live in a little club here in Columbia back in '93, and the keyboardist/singer (can't remember his name) went on about a 5 minute rant about how Kansas had to play little dives because not enough people were buying their albums. It's obvious by his rant, that they want radio hits.
Hey here's an idea...play more commercial stuff that more than a handfull of people can get into and relate to!I really like Kansas, but they sing about kings and castles, and strange shit! Like I said...I like them, but they just don't get it, or just don't know HOW to write more commercial songs.

They may have picked up a portion of a rif, but the songs have no comparison. Neal should be flattered they turned his rif into an awesome, but now way overplayed, song. Instead of whining about it like he has done...I might have taken a more positive approach. That's just me.
Livgren's lyrics are way deeper than Cain's. No comparison. The Kansas musical arrangements much more complex. No comparison. Musicians?? Better is in the ears of the beholder. I think Neil is much superior on guitar and Smith excelled in drums, but the rest are comparable. Having said that, the music is apples and oranges. All good to me!
Those of you bagging on Kansas ever sit and listen to any of their albums all the way through? Try Leftoverature...forget about COWS. Point of Know Return. Go back before Leftoverature with Song for America or Masque. If your looking for pop 40, don't bother.
If you want a real treat...check out Livgren's Seeds of Change album. Several guest singers, including Dio, which is a story in itself. Think you might be impressed.

Neal Schon is on record at concerts as saying that Kansas ripped off Carry On Wayward Son from Journey. Ironically, the first review of the album that I went to had this to say, " “I’m Gonna Leave You”... The riff that starts this one sounds similar to the second half of that heard in Kansas’s “Carry on Wayward Son.”
I'm not sure about the Rush song you're referring to. Tom Sawyer doesn't really sound like any Journey song that I know of.

My bad...sorry I missed the "stir" factor.
If I was offered free front-row seats to a single Kansas show, OR free front-row seats to ten Journey shows, I'd have to go with Kansas...both great bands, but no contest as to which is the better one, especially live.

Hey....I usually like your posts, but you are way off here. Do some research before you reply with a post, Jim....DIO sings about kings and castles. Kansas does not sing about kings and castles....Kansas is a well-disguised pseudo-christian band.
Kings and Castles.....this board churns out some weird shit sometimes.....

Vladan wrote:My question is: If Kansas are so good, why doesn't Andrew have a forum dedicated to them?.
Kansas rocks, but... I really can only find 3 of their songs I like, and Journey? well I just love their entire catalog. All those Kansas front men they ever had, could only wish they were half as good as Steve Perry! and that alone is enough. Journey will always be remembered, while Kansas on the hand are actually rather forgettable (that could answer my previous question, maybe). IMO, Kansas don't have anything that makes them stand out from the rest of the crowd. Queen, Journey, Whitesnake, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, those groups are stand out groups, usually because of their the singer or guitarist, or both.
The only reason I got into them in the first place was because of "Guitar Hero 2" with Carry On My Wayward Son on the set list, apart from that... I seriously doubt I would know who they are (they are just not that talked about) compared to Journey.
Those are my thoughts on the matter.
