Live Discussion---"Journey On Tour"

Postby mikemarrs » Mon Apr 06, 2009 6:17 pm

through four decades the band has been across the world numerous times and was at its peak during the eighties decade and has continued to play around the world to this day.what tours have you seen by the band and which are your favorites.what bands opened for them and what bands did they open for through the years.i've heard the stories of them opening for the stones in 1981.they had a young bryan adams open for them on the frontiers tour in 1983.i'd like to have seen the departure and escape tours myself.1980 and 1981 were the peak years of this band in my honest opinion.......

what tours are your favorites? any you've seen that stand out?

1981 Escape My favorite concert of all, and I've been to many.

1983 Frontiers A close second.

2006 with JSS Was disappointed that Augeri wasn't there , but JSS was fantastic.

2008 Las Vegas and Dallas. Great shows. The Dallas show was phenomenal. As close to the early '80's as I've seen.

Frankly, I never got to see a Journey tour in the 80's. I was broke and still wet behind the ears. I saw a tour in 2008 and the venue (spokane, washington) sucked for sound. I did not blame that on the band, although a friend of mine who heard crappy sound at a different venue has dissed them altogether.....his loss. From everything I've seen, read and heard this year, they are back in a big way. I guess last year was just for practice with Arnel. This year has been and IS the defining time and I believe they are gonna reap some well deserved recognition. The band is tight, they look like they're having a great time and they sound better than ever, in the last many years.

I unfortunetly never got to see them in the 80s with perry. I have heard that the escape tour was just crazy as in they packed arenas 4-5 nights in some cities. Then with their frontiers stadium tour, they invested in computerized lighting and huge stage designs with massive video screens. Must have been a site to see. I think though the one tour i would have liked to have seen is the ROR tour. Yes I know Steve's voice wasnt the same and the band didnt have a huge album out, but they had all the hits to play, and the lighting and stage designs with the huge triangular screens looked pretty cool. There also seemed to be a lot of energy on this tour.

Vocally, their '70s work was the most impressive and consistent live of the Perry epoch. Never have I seen or heard a bad performance from the band (Perry and Schon in particular) from that timeframe, though I don't like the song selection.

In the '80s, I think Perry went from the Loon's "hunk of beef" to "a large ham", wasting the audience's time with histrionics and theatrics worthy of your average, inept soap opera. It ruined the execution for me; particularly when there aren't any credible excuses other than him trying to overemote.

I liked the 2001 DVD; I liked the 30th Anniversary Shows (I couldn't tell that Augeri was "lipping"); I liked Soto's tenure (on the late '80s work); and I loved the Revelation tour.
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'
