This whole discussion is simply opinion. I like both Journey and Kansas. Commercial Journey with Perry (and then even more so with Friga) was quite a different animal from what Kansas was trying to do at that time.
So comparing only the pre-perry journey with earlier Kansas here. Journey in the pre-perry years, musically speaking, was every bit as good if not better in my opinion than Kansas. Lyrically Kansas was superior during the pre-perry years, again MO.
To suggest that Schon, Dunbar, and Rolie, were anything less than stellar musicians is simply silly and borderline ignorant. If one's tastes lay more toward one band than the other, then that is the realm of opinion. Kansas was a great collection of musicians also, and I enjoy their music alot.
PS - while I stated my opinion was that Kansas' lyrics were superior to Journey's early on, I really don't feel either band was anything truely special lyric wise back then. It was about the music, at least it was for me.
