OT: Laptop Parts

Postby ebake02 » Tue Apr 07, 2009 3:15 am

My laptop has been at the repair shop with an overheating problem. Computer guy the fan wasn't working right and I'll need a new one. The problem is that he said it'll around $210 but he's trying to find one cheaper. My question is how much does a fan for an HP Pavilion laptop usually run. $210 seems really expensive to me.

laptop parts are expensive as are the repairs. If you give us the model number of the laptop I'm sure we can come up with a part number and a price.
You may want to check the following sites for parts:
Microcenter.com
Newegg.com
ZipZoomFly.com
TigerDirect.com

I do repairs on desktops and laptops myself, so I'm pretty sure we can get you an answer pretty fast.

It's an HP Pavilion dv8000t. Hope that helps.

I took my HP laptop apart when it had the same problem, and all I had to do was vacuum the dust out of the fan. You have to be careful not to put a laptop on carpet because the fan will suck the carpet fibers and dust into the machine.

I'm not sure if this is your problem, but I thought I'd mention it.

That's the exact same model that I have.

Here is something off of another forum where an owner of this same model laptop fixed the problem, just like I did:

Re: [SOLVED] HP Pavilion dv8000 suddenly crashes

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I wanted to thank everyone for the info on this forum, and particularly this thread. I have an HP dv8000.

After considerable deliberation, much reading, and the benefit of everyones discussion, and having already ruled out the battery and power supply, I determined my overheating problem was probably in line with this thread.

I took 'er apart, cleaned 'er out (MASSIVE hair ball on the heat sink in an otherwise pristine case - I wonder if that caused problems...) and simply replaced the thermal paste.

VOILA! She runs like a champ! Used to crash running a windows update (or anything for that matter) and now I'm running WAY too much stuff to stress test (not very scientific, but fun though) and barely any fan at all.

It sounds like someone is trying to clip you. Don't pay the $210... just tell the guy to clean out the fan and the entire machine and put it back together for you. That shouldn't cost more than $40.

P.S. - You don't have cats do you? If so, get some kind of air filtration system - cats and computers don't go well together. I had a friend who has cats call me out to fix his computer, and it was stuffed full of cat hair! It took an hour to get it all out it was so bad.

You'll have to copy and paste the entire link, because it won't post correctly here. But it's $23.98 for the part on Ebay.
