OT: Since You Been Gone - Head East vs. Rainbow

Postby Voyager » Wed Apr 08, 2009 3:59 pm

Back in 1978, a band called Head East released a song called "Since You Been Gone". It didn't get as much exposure as it should have since they weren't very well known except in the Midwest USA. A year later in 1979, a band called Rainbow with a much larger fanbase re-recorded the song, and their version became more popular due to the broader audience that it reached. The radio stations were even playing both versions for a while after the Rainbow release.

I never could figure out why Rainbow ripped the song off from Head East, because I liked the Head East version much better and I saw no reason to redo it (especially with John Schlitt singing... that's as blasphemous as redoing a Steve Perry hit and giving the cloned version more airplay than the original).

What about you - which version do you like better? Please make your decision based on the audio only, because the Rainbow version actually had a video made for it.

Gotta go with Rainbow, the Head East version was kind of annoying with whatever that little keyboard zippy sound was.

They ripped it off because it's a cool song. I prefer Head East's a bit more. :)

Ha, ha, gotta vote against my namesake! Prefer Schlitt over Bonnett.

Graham's always a bit wound up.

Cool poll, here's another good Head East.

Actually, the lead singer (John Schlitt) left Head East to join Petra back in the 80's. I'm not sure who is singing for them now.

They may not have ripped it off, but don't you think it was weird for them to re-record a song that was released a year earlier and already on the charts and getting airplay? Can you think of any other instance where that has happened before or after this one? I can't.

How did the guy get away with selling the song to two different artists? What a crook!

Correct - I Surrender is also a Russ Ballard song - Blackmore took them as he could see the commercial possibilities, as he wanted to take Rainbow away from the heavier Dio era to a more mainstream sound......

So, if Tool wants to get a more contemporary sound - should they steal a Coldplay hit from last year and re-record it to become more mainstream?

While I don't believe it charted high on the charts, Greg Rolie did the song "I want to go back" on his first solo release about a year before the same song became a huge hit for Eddie Money.

Funny thing is I saw Greg perform this tune at a new years eve show at the Cow Palace in SF. He was one of the openers for Night Ranger who was headling the evening. One of the other opening acts was Eddie Money.

Blinded by the Light.....Bruce wrote it, recorded it - and it went nowhere. Manfred Mann got the hit, Charted at #1 on the Hot 100. To this day it is Bruce's ONLY #1 song as a songwriter. I'm sure he's pissed.
