Album Discussion---"Captured"

this 1981 live album was one of the last things rollie did with the band before handing over keyboard duties to jon cain.most of the songs here actually sound better than the studio versions.includes material from the first three perry albums.

my favorites are wheel in the sky,dixie highway,stay awhile.

Amazing live album. And when you include the bonus studio track, The Party's Over, you could just tell Journey was about to hit superstardom. What a way for Rolie to go out.

I'm not extraordinarily fond of their '70s material, so the songs don't appeal to me as much as those of the subsequent eras, but it's damn well executed. Fantastic live album.

This is one of the few Perry-era Journey albums I don't have. Based on your comments, I think I'll pick it up.

It's my father's favorite album, bar none. Lends credence to the idea that Journey is even better live than in the studio.

I dig this "album" It was the first Journey album that I bought and I used to crank it on the way to pick up my high school dates

and I believe it would play during the "resolve" of some of these dates ...lol...

Neils guitar tone is not that great but I used to love looking at all the pics...this is when Neil started looking cool..

once neal lost the mustache and afro look he did start looking a lot cooler.he left the 70's behind and joined the 80's imagewise.right around escape they all shaved the facial hair there for about a year.especially ross.he looked a lot different clean shaven.the one pic inside of escape was always pretty cool.

this was the third album besides escape and frontiers that i owned back in the 80's when i first got into the band.captured immediately became my favorite for a long time and still pretty much ties up with escape as far as my favorite album.the album captured is great from start to finish and those who don't have it will be very satisfied especially with the one new studio track smash at the end of the album called the party's over.that is one song that was a pretty good one but seldom gets discussed and i wish they would put in the live show in the future.if you want to hear pretty much the best of the first three perry efforts the songs here are pretty much better than the studio versions.

Are you joking?!? I loved Neal with the fro and Fu Manchu mustache. That was awesome! My favorite Neal look. Of course, I don't think he could pull it off today. His hair has gone from "Afro" to that Art Garfunkle-esque "Half-ro". :oops:

Journey's live cd CAPTURED is a great name for the cd. They have captured a true Journey concert, they show the band how they really are, fun and rocking. They take you on a ride that is easy to get into. Not only is Journey hyped on this cd, but the fans are too.
When I listen to a live recording there are things I listen for. 1) how does the band sound, does it sound like the band on the studio cds. 2) What new things do they bring to the songs. 3) Are the songs at least as good as the original. 4) How do they interact with the crowd. 5) And how raw or polished the sound is.
CAPTURED succeeds on just about every level. Just about every song on this cd is as good as the original. With a few surpassing the orginal. Line Of Fire, Lights/Stay Awhile, Walks Like A Lady, Lovin Touchin Squeezin, and Wheel In The Sky all surpass the orginal. Any Way You Want on this cd is one of the few live versions of the song that come off good, they nail it here.
Do You Recall and Dixie Highway are the downers on the cd. Rest of the songs are good and tight. Perry is in true form vocally, and he knows how to work a crowd. Neal a good short solo, and on the record and tape there is a good Ross/Smith instrumental.
The whole concert has a very live feel to it, and makes for a great listen.
The new song, The Part's over (Hopelessly In Love) starts out one way then about midway thru changes beat and direction, as the songs lyrics slides to another take on the song. This works good too. Rollie plays on the concert part, but a studio musician feels the keys on the new studio song. Over all the best cd of the Rollie era.

Agreed, The Partys' Over was a shocking new sound and pre-signaled (yes no Rolie, but no Cain either, this is a Perry beaute) a departure after "Departure."
And the live tracks absolutely BURN, what a record Captured is...how many live albums spawn a live-only new song original like Dixie Hiway that still makes it into the setlist NOW every now and then...and they wrote the damn thing on a bus...studs

Would have been better if they hadn't gone back in the studio and recorded backing vocals over the concert audio. Kinda takes the "live" out of it. I can understand fixing something that's out of tune, but just for the sake of making them sound layered...doesn't work for me.

Metallica's "No Leaf Clover" from the S&M live album/dvd is the only one that springs to mind. (Forgive the slight hijack, just got tix to see them and I'm pretty excited.

Overall, I think it is a great concert album.

I wish they would have slowed "Wheel" down. Contrary to popular opinion, I prefer the studio version.

I also ALWAYS skip Dixie Highway. Never liked that song.

A very good live album. It's great that we have a live document of where the band was as it was just on the cusp of hitting it huge w/ Escape and what not. Party's Over is one of my favorites... Smitty's groove on that intro over Neal's riff is just great and it's just a fun, catchy summer song.

To this day Captured remains my favorite "live" album and ranks among Journey's best releases. This was Rollie era Journey at their peak before Greg stepped aside and replaced himself with Cain. Of course Escape would follow and another chapter in the Journey legacy would be born, but this was a great album for Journey fans.

Yep, I know what you mean, Captured helped me capture a girl once. SHe climbed in the car, just as Captured was starting. I turn to the girl and whisper "Boinsoir montreal" to her just as Perry is shouting it out to the crowd at the start of track one.

The girl asked me what does that mean. "Well I said, boinsoir is good evening in French and Montreal is French for beautiful angel which is what you are (har har har)
And she fell for it, laughs and says aw youre sweet. Not the sharpest girl ,(but I could only win over the dumb ones). I preceded to drive to Lovers lookout point, got out a six pack of beer, gave her five of em saying "Gee I can only drink one of these cos Im driving and I want to keep you safe miss Montreal.
By track six we were cuddling to "Too Late" Seconds later I was hammerin down the Dixie Hishway if you know what I mean.

One word WOW!! love since were recording tonight we have to thank you for being on YOUR ALBUMB...I mean what band calls it your albumb!!! Dixie HIGHWAY...then the classic Feeling that way... too late also kicks but as just the same way... DAMN... Just damn...
okay more than one word... yes AWYWI WHEEL...the sing along parts... and do we still sing it today??? hell yes...MOST CLASSIC OF LIVE CDS... QUEENS LIVE KILLERS comes a close 2nd...

Doesn't it depend on whether a band or artist acknowledges the concert(s) are being recorded for a live album in the first place?

I can think of some who acknowledge it.

Captured is a solid example of a live album

it does... most dont acknkowledge it...some do but not everyone...that they are recording...
a live CD.

Perhaps that has more to do with the fact that quite often live albums are recorded over a series of concerts as opposed to just one.
