ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP)—Los Angeles Angels rookie pitcher Nick Adenhart and two other people were killed Thursday when a minivan ran a red light and struck their sports car, authorities said.

Adenhart, 22, died after undergoing surgery, University of California, Irvine Medical Center spokesman John Murray said.

A fourth person remained hospitalized in critical condition.

Adenhart, of Silver Spring, Md., was the Angels’ No. 3 starter. He threw six scoreless innings Wednesday night in his fourth major-league start and first of the season. Oakland won the game 6-4.

Adenhart and three other people were in a silver Mitsubishi that was struck shortly before 12:30 a.m. by a minivan that ran a red light and also hit another vehicle, police said.

The sports car struck a light pole, killing three people inside.

Police Lt. Craig Brower said the minivan driver fled the crash scene and was captured a short time later. The driver was arrested and booked for investigation of felony hit-and-run.

During the Nick Adenhart press conference, a Fullerton PD spokesman said the man who caused the accident that killed Nick and two others was under the influence of alcohol at the time.

The spokesman also said he believes the man, 22-year-old Andrew Gallo, was also driving on a suspended license because of a prior DUI. The cop said Gallo will probably be booked on felony hit-and-run, felony DUI, vehicular manslaughter and possibly murder.

Also -- the Angels game tonight has been canceled

How sad. It is such a difficult thing to comprehend continuous drunk driving in anyone. Such a reckless disregard for one's own life, let alone the lives of others.

I was witness to a death by drunk driving. I had so hoped that that wouldn't be the case here.

The guy was drinking and driving, and had a history of DUI's he was also driving on a suspended license. Stuff like this is so senseless. If you must drink, Don't drive! EVER! This is one of my biggest pet peaves. I have a friend who lost her 8 year old son a week before Christmas due to some schmuck who had to drink and drive.

Now this young man, who had so much potential is gone.

Very very sad. Unfortunately, these drunk driving accidents happen every night across America. The driver usually gets 7 years in prison for vehicular manslaughter, when
its a death sentence for the person that is hit and killed. In this drunk driver's case he not only committed the manslaughter, but a felony hit and run, plus had a prior DUII (according to the other people following the news). That prior criminal history should enhance his sentence in the new case. Chances are he will get upwards of 20 years. This case could be prosecuted as a "felony murder" because a death of another resulted in the commission of a felony (if the driving on the suspended license was a felony for this guy's prior drunk driving). Usually, driving on a suspended license is a misdemeanor, not a felony. I prosecuted these cases during my four years with the District Attorney's office. They were always very sad. I will never forget the victims and their families left behind in any of those cases.

Well I just read where they actually are charging him with 3 counts of murder. Prior DUI convictions, suspended license.....I hope he fries.

He was definately on the way up and had his whole life ahead of him. But so did Courtney Francis Stewart and Henry Nigel Pearson.

Do you know what else is sad? If this would have been anyone other than an athlete or celebrity, then it would not be on the front page news of the OC Register...and nobody would be talking about it. People die everyday in our country because of these idiots who drink and drive. Too many innocent people are dying out there. If you are stupid enough to drink, be smart enough not to drive... you may being saving the lives of others.

One last thing. I hope and pray that Jon Wilhite will have a full recovery.

SJ, Dan really likes the guy. He was just talking about what a waist of someone so talented. Get to know Dan. He was really upset at his loss. Not just as a baseball fan, but as a human being too. His family bears the scars of a drunk driver that have never healed. He has the right to his feelings as much as anyone else here.

Forgot to add, he mentioned the other lossed lives, why? Because they matter too. It is sad more is not done to prevent this kind of senseless loss. Many forget the non famous people. But someone loves them. This was his point as well. Let us not forget all who were lost. As I am sure many of you felt the same.
