Any Chicago/Cetera fans?

Postby jrny84 » Tue Apr 14, 2009 9:40 am

Just wondering if there are any Chicago or Peter Cetera fans in here. Im a pretty big fan of the Cetera-Chicago when they were pretty huge worldwide. They made some awesome music back in the 70s and 80s and Cetera was always spot on when performing live. Cetera though I think had a pretty big ego (pretty arrogant) towards the mid eighties and was ready to part from Chicago. After Cetera left the band did bring in Jason Sheff to sing Cetera's parts and Bill Champin wrote and sang a few good songs like "Your not alone", "I dont want to live withyou you love", and "look away". But to me the magic was kind of gone when Cetera left, much like Perry leaving Journey. I often wonder what a Journey and Chicago Co-headliner tour would be like, they did both write alot of ballads and love songs.

Huge fan of Chicago....kinda like the Terry Kath and Jason Scheff eras better, but Peter was cool. Terry was an EXCELLENT guitarist. In fact, when asked who HIS musical idol was, Hendrix said Kath. jimi also believed Terry was the better gutarist.

Huge fan of Chicago and all the guys in there. Robert Lamm's solo career is really underrated, as is Bill Champlin's.

My first CD's were Chicago 17 and Heart (Heart) which were included with my Pioneer sixpack player. I also bought Solitude/Solitaire when it came out. The David Foster produced albums by Chicago were top notch.

I'm a bit of a Chicago fan. Love Chicago. They had it all. Great musicians at every position. Horn section only rivaled (possibly) by that of Earth, Wind & Fire. Good vocalist with Cetera, Robert Lamm, and the late great Terry Kath. I think Chicago began to unravel with the untimely death of guitarist/vocalist Terry Kath. At some point in the '80, I believe a decision was made by their record lable to move away from the horn-heavy sound that made them famous, and that I believe was the death knell for Chicago. Peter Cetera's exist was just the final nail in the coffin. Apparently they're still out there with a few new members, but it just ain't the same.

We won't even discuss the Hall of Fame snubbing....

I don't see why it wouldn't be a go, then. Don't go and buy your ticket yet or anything, but let's plan on it.

I love Chicago! By far one of my favorite groups, behind Styx and Journey.

So many different era's, but I love them all. The Kath era is great, the Cetera/Foster years are awesome, and post-Cetera is great as well. I love hearing Jason Scheff sing his own songs, like "Will You Still Love Me?" and "Heart in Pieces" are two of my favorites from him.

I highly recommend Stone of Sisyphus, one of the best albums I have heard from the group!

This is a drawing I did of Jason Scheff for the Jonathan Cain/Chicago fundraiser last summer. Jason Scheff autographed the drawing for the event and it was auctioned off. I ended up joining his fan club. He is big into fitness and helps a lot of people stay motivated to stay in shape. Nice guy. :D

LOVE Chicago during the Kath and Cetera era's. After Cetera left I could get into the new lead singer. For me it will always be Chicago with Terry Kath and Peter Cetera.

I just watched a program yesterday featuring Chicago now...I think it was on A&E. They played some songs (strained) & were interviewed. As I was watching it I said to myself that I really should buy the music as I have always loved it & it's a part of my growing up. But, there's one song that I cannot listen to "Color my world" 'cuz it reminds me of both Kath's death & a girl in school who died in a car crash around that time (it was her favorite song).

Yeah, well I can't listen to that song cuz it sucks  Unless it's played as part of the Ballet, which makes it fit I guess.

In all seriousness, you probably saw part of when they did A&E Live By Request. I have that DVD and like it a lot. If nothing else, get the compilation "The Very Best of Chicago." It's 2 discs and has a lot of hits spanning all the eras of the band. Very comparable to "The Essential Journey." That was my gateway into Chicago. It's really well done for a GH compilation, which I generally don't like too often.

Many great calls on that list, but this song is GREAT. My favorite from Stone for sure. Absolutely massive ballad. I love You're Not Alone in particular too, love the guitar leads all over that song, esp. the outro solo. But those are all great choices.

Are you aware that Scheff's father played in Elvis's band? I guess that explains the song.... :D

Yes I am, I read the story behind that one, can't remember where, but it definitely ups the power of the song for sure. Jason delivers the song with tons of emotion. He's such a great studio singer.

My favorites:

Will You Still Love Me?
Along comes a Woman
Hard to say I'm sorry/Get Away
Stone of Sisyphus
Alive Again
25 or 6 to 4
Does anybody really know what time it is?
Feelin' Stronger Every Day
The Pull
Love Me Tomorrow
Dialogue (Parts 1 and 2)
You're Not Alone
You Come to my Senses

Cetera solo songs:
Glory of Love
Big Mistake
One Good Woman
*I like his greatest hits collection with new versions of baby what a big surprise, you're the inspiration, and if you leave me now*

I don't think you can ever go wrong with Chicago. They are nearly flawless. The only flops came when Chicago 13 and XIV were released, but I somewhat enjoyed those. I liked "Street Player", "Must have been crazy", and "Loser with a broken heart" from 13, and I liked several from the flop of them all XIV.

Last month Hubby Bub treated me to my first Chicago show.
It was a great time!
Though I enjoy most everything they did with Cetera I think they do finely without him.
No Tell Lover, Happy Man and Street Player are my three faves at the moment.
Favorite Kath sung tune for me is Little One.

Chicago is awesome. Seen them live a few times and have heard live recordings. My only gripe, as it is with every band that has been around the block a few times, is that it's basically the same concert year after year. I would love for Chicago to have a year where they drop all the hits out of the setlist (except maybe one or two) and just showcase all the other great stuff in the catalog. (And yes, they would have to advertise something to that effect so you don't have all the "same old" fans griping.)

I am glad Journey is playing more that one song from their new cd. Their setlist has been getting a little more diverse over the last couple of years...and I'm loving it.

I absolutely love Chicago too..

Didn't think I would like Chicago XXX, but after a few spins I was hooked for the most part.. Especially on the harmonies of "Caroline".

They have so many great songs.. but one set of lyrics just gets me everytime, and its not even one of my favorite Chicago songs!

From Chicago 17's "Remember The Feeling"

I remember the feeling
I remember the way
She came and wrapped her arms around me
Told me that she cared
Said shed always be there

My "first" love so to speak, did just that.. we were on our first date and out of the blue she wrapped her arms around me and kissed me. Blew my mind. Still to this day I think back to that and smile.

I'm such a suck its not even funny lol

I am not the Chicago historian that some here are. That said, I don't believe Chicago was ever a band that was centered around their vocalist, as Journey was. In fact, my understanding of Chicago is that Cetera didn't even sing on much of anything until around Chicago 16 and 17. I believe Chicago 17 was their most successful commercial release, which is the material that is so identifiable with Cetera's voice. Every time I've heard Scheff sing, it is quite obvious that he is doing his best to mimic Cetera's sound (and does a pretty good job) on the Cetera era Chicago stuff. I've yet to hear anyone come close to mimicking Perry, even thought they've all tried like hell!
