I don't really care if Journey continues on or not. If most of you guys think this is 1981 reincarnated, then I think that's great you think that. I hope the band continues on for those who can't live without them touring. But, for me, my excitement for Journey ended after Jeff's departure. I was grateful for the band continuing on after Perry's second departure. I loved listening to Steve Augeri. And I really had gotten excited when JSS joined the band, because I knew ahead of time just how talented Jeff was and how much he would have brought to this band. I also knew that the band had potential to break off into many new and exciting directions musically. The band nowadays is just "meh" to me. There isn't anything new about the sound. Nothing special. I hear a lot of influences from earlier material, even with the lyrics. Kind of like a paint by numbers sort of thing.
I would be willing to give this band, truly, another chance if they just got off the Perry clone kick and did something completely new. Not just with the vocals, but something new musically as well. Heck, that was a part of the reason why they were so great in the 70's/80's. Not just because of Steve Perry, but because musically, they tried new things and new directions. Whether if people liked it or not, they weren't afraid to recreate themselves with each new album. I can't help to feel that if they are not willing to do that now, that it is only about the money and living in the past. If I want to listen to classic Journey live, it doesn't get much closer for me than going to a much cheaper and more entertaining Frontiers show.
And, I realize that there are some bands and artists out there they are better off with sticking with what works musically. Not every band or artist can completely change their sound and be successful, but I think Journey is one of those talented bands that has that talent and ability. I just don't think they are willing to do so at this stage of the game.
