Actually...while they were shocked about the band's successes, it was kind of backhanded complimentary.

This corporate rock thing they mentioned slays me. There may have been a few...but bands like REO and Kansas...playing the small joints around the Midwest for years before making it big could hardly be considered "corporate."

I first heard that story from a broadcast about 2+ years ago... Robin had reported that it was SP's bday and that reminded Howard of the time he met Perry. This was a broadcast about a year ago, I think.

And no, I don't think HS is necessarily bitter... he had a bad experience meeting him so he told the story...
I have said the same thing about meeting Neal Schon... I'm not bitter about it, but I did think he was a douche.

To be fair though, HS has never been one to make things up and he shoots straight... its not hard to imagine that in 1980 when Journey started to really make it, that the singer was found to act like a dick.

I agree. He has a radio show. He was reminded about it and spoke of it. If someone insulted me in the past and I had a show and someone brought it up, that's what I would do, speak of it. As far as the corporate rock label, those guys listen to heavier rock, so they don't really know. No different than many people think of Journey and Survivor and Foreigner. It wasn't and isn't their thing.

The Congress of Filipino-American Citizens filed a $65-million lawsuit against him in the past for talking about how Filipinos eat their young and sell their daughters as sex slaves. Of course since he seems to be bashing SP and seemingly giving props to Pineda all that's forgotten about.

I've definitely enjoyed some of his shows, and I saw the movie "Private Parts" several times -- I thought it was excellent. The only real experience I've had with his radio show was the televised version. I've watched several, several episodes and it really did get to be pretty one-note. Howard ogling over guest strippers, making fun of freaks, and getting his interview subjects to talk about their sex lives. He may not do softball interviews, but his whole shtick wore thin on me after a while.

I always thought that was the problem with the E! channel version. They showed that stuff (and only that stuff) for the shock value. All the stuff I would find genuinely funny or interesting, I'd be thinking "Why doesn't THIS ever make the E! show?" Because without shock, they feel no one will tune in. It's probably the same with the new On Demand channel. By watching only what's cut down for TV, you get the idea that all they do is have strippers riding the Sybian and the Wack Pack members doing stupid stunts.

But as to the Perry thing (and I knew as soon as I saw this topic (again) that it was going to turn into "What a jerk to say something like that about Stevie!" because that's what happened the last 2 times this came up )...

I mean come on, let's be objective about it... in 1980 when they met (briefly), Howard was totally unknown, so Perry walking into a room and goofing on him and calling him names (as the story is told... and there's another version other than what's been posted here) had NOTHING to even do with Howard being a shock jock or his show or anything else. It was a guy in a huge popular band opening his mouth... like that never happens? Yes, I AM a fan of Steve but I'm not so loony that I'm about to get upset that Howard Stern called him a douchebag... as the story is told, Perry walked in and really for no reason called him big bird... no one else sees what's wrong with that picture? I mean, really? At least meet the guy and then decide if you don't like him to start calling him names.

But again, it was 30 years ago... who cares. Its just a DJ telling his experience of what happened. What's the big deal?

I suppose that makes me "less of a fan" or something but whatever. It's still a damn funny story.

Good point about the E! channel version, because I know it was only a segment of the show and I've wondered if it really represented it well. Probably better for me to say I tired of that version. Never really listened to a full radio broadcast before.
