Journey in Hawaii - youtube

Postby Escape Artist » Thu Apr 16, 2009 8:46 am

I just got around to watching the youtube footage of Journey in Hawaii. Arnel sounds amazing and the band is extremely tight, they all look like they are having a great time.

They are tuned down, I think, but Arnel's voice sounds really good to me that way, it has much more of a full bodied warm feel to it if that makes sense... anyway Good to see and hear! 8)

Hell yes, listen to the crowd when Arnel comes out. No, they don't like him at all. ;)

Hoping you'd walk by so he could shove the neck up your ass? ;)

Hey, at least your farts would have rhythm as he pounds out the intro to DSB! LOL

Considering there are over 200, 000 Filipinos in Hawaii and 60 percent of the population is Asian, the shock would have been if Journey didn't sell out their shows there.

It's a very smart move on the band's part. They've always sold out over there, regardless of who was singing but AP got them that extra push this time. Makes good business sense to hit places with large Asian populations, especially with the downturn in the economy any little advantage will help.

Yeah, it is. Play it along with SW from the album. It's pretty clear that it is. That's what I had to do to be proven that it was, because I didn't believe it either.

The South East Asians don't really have much of a shared culture so we really don't care about each other. I don't think you'll see a lot of south east asians in a Journey concert apart from Pinoys the same way that you won't see a lot of Pinoys in a Singaporean or Malaysian artist's concert.

There are loads of Pinoys in Macau working in bars and hotels hence Journey was well received there. The other locals who attended the concert were probably there to see Journey and not just Arnel.

No matter what, they had to add two shows to their planned one show at Blaisdell due to the quick sellout of the first show. All three shows each sold out in two hours. The other two shows on the other islands also sold out. Pretty impressive. Even with the huge Filipino support there, Journey never expected that nor did the promoter over there from the brief interview I saw of him.

Journey always sells out in Hawaii, I was surprised when they didn't play there last year, they could have had a stadium show. I'm saying starting off this year over there was a good business move considering they skipped the place the last 5 years or so. It was money on the table just waiting to be had.

Don't worry. When I want to bash the band, you'll know.

Yep. Doesn't matter to me, but it absolutely IS.

When SP did it on the FTLOSM tour, I actually liked it better. Great singers sound great in any key. Arnel sounds great here. Not SP great, but great.

There's only one.

The debate rages on... :D Sounds great regardless, Arnel has found his comfort zone with Journey.

When it comes to downtuning, it depends on the song more than the singer for me. A song like NWA doesn't work too well downtuned, SW does, as does I'll Be Alright Without You. That's my 2c at least, it's song-to-song for me.

Tuned down? Yep. I bet Kelty could sing it in original key. Now THAT I'd pay for.

Sorry, but de-tuning is a crutch. :D

JK can, and does, sing everything in the original key.

Sorry we have been off the radar, Saint John, but big things are afoot. More news soon!

If Escape can sound like it did when I saw them live I would go see them over the real Journey without a second thought. To some that may sound crazy but it is a FACT that they sounded more like Journey than Journey sounds now. I like Arnel but for me he just gets the job done and well however Jason would give you fucking goose bumps at times and the rest of the band was just as spectacular so it was a real treat to see them each and every time. It's cheaper, less of a crowd, no parking woes.. It's a no brainer for me.. I want to hear Journey sound like Journey and as I am biased toward the 77 to 81 period a Kelty led Escape is where my Journey live dollars are going. I dont care about seeing Neal and Friga on stage or Arnel for that matter.

I can tell you the line up and guess what year..

I would say 94 to their last show in 99 at the Toy Tiger in Louisville, Ky. Scott Pisota on guitar (incredible player and just note for note), Justin Konopa on bass, dont remember drummer (Shawn Wells maybe?) or keyboardist however the guy playing keys was there every show and there was a bass player before Justin that was fired according to Jason but I shouldnt go in to why. I was there every show as I lived blocks away. I was at the tiger every weekend anyway... Ahh the good ole days...

As you probably remember (or maybe not), I was the bassist in the lineup prior to that (although I didn't get fired - I think there was a guy in between me and Justin). However, I did see them with Scott and Justin, Kit Claytor (keys) and Scott Dunn (drums). Overall, that was a better lineup than "my" version. Let's just say that you can go home again, and soon you will know what I mean.

Peace!
