I think Howard Stern should interview the Bluejeangirl. What would that be like?

The problem is I'm female and not famous, so I wouldn't last 1 minute in there without a promise of taking something off, then I'd be thrown out for refusing.

Rip Rokken wrote:The only real experience I've had with his radio show was the televised version. I've watched several, several episodes and it really did get to be pretty one-note. Howard ogling over guest strippers, making fun of freaks, and getting his interview subjects to talk about their sex lives.

I always thought that was the problem with the E! channel version. They showed that stuff (and only that stuff) for the shock value. All the stuff I would find genuinely funny or interesting, I'd be thinking "Why doesn't THIS ever make the E! show?" Because without shock, they feel no one will tune in. It's probably the same with the new On Demand channel. By watching only what's cut down for TV, you get the idea that all they do is have strippers riding the Sybian and the Wack Pack members doing stupid stunts.

But as to the Perry thing (and I knew as soon as I saw this topic (again) that it was going to turn into "What a jerk to say something like that about Stevie!" because that's what happened the last 2 times this came up  )...

I mean come on, let's be objective about it... in 1980 when they met (briefly), Howard was totally unknown, so Perry walking into a room and goofing on him and calling him names (as the story is told... and there's another version other than what's been posted here) had NOTHING to even do with Howard being a shock jock or his show or anything else. It was a guy in a huge popular band opening his mouth... like that never happens? Yes, I AM a fan of Steve but I'm not so loony that I'm about to get upset that Howard Stern called him a douchebag... as the story is told, Perry walked in and really for no reason called him big bird... no one else sees what's wrong with that picture? I mean, really?  At least meet the guy and then decide if you don't like him to start calling him names.

But again, it was 30 years ago... who cares. Its just a DJ telling his experience of what happened. What's the big deal?

I suppose that makes me "less of a fan" or something but whatever. It's still a damn funny story.

Good point about the E! channel version, because I know it was only a segment of the show and I've wondered if it really represented it well. Probably better for me to say I tired of that version. Never really listened to a full radio broadcast before.

Rip, when he was on Clear Channel, I used to listen to him a lot. It's a four-hour show. Half of that is the stripper junk. But in the morning when he would begin the show he would recap events going on newswise or politics, a host of things, movies. He's highly intelligent and it's very interesting. And he actually votes Republican a good portion of the time, so it's always a well-rounded conversation re politics. I like his rants at times about stars or other nonsense and the dynamics between the people on his show can be funny if you listen to it enough and know the people. I then would turn off when it became the stchick beginning with strippers or other disgusting stuff. My brother, a family man, who could care less about the stripper and other gross stuff, loved the other part of the show and listens to it religiously. Now, whether it got worse when he went to Sirius without controls, I don't know.

I feel the same way Jana... the stripper stuff and 'hot chick' contests and breast implant giveaways I can take or leave... I'm not offended by it, I mean to each their own, but I'm uninterested...

I like the discussions and the interviews, and when they get on a good topic, or get a good guest or a real good interview going, the show is awesome. SOME of the wack pack stuff can be funny, but I really only like it when its just the regular crew talking or the interviews.

When they went to Sirius, of course they had more freedom, but honestly it's not been as out of control as people might think. The biggest difference is that they no longer need to censor cursing and subject matter. And the Sybian rides... obviously they couldn't do that on WXRK.

The best parts of that show are when things go wrong - that's some of the greatest comedy. This week (because they're off) they're doing replays of the best on-air battles between the staff, with guests... everything, and it's called "Fight Week". No strippers or crazy business, just the highlights of staff and guests fighting with each other. Those are some of the best moments!

You may love him or hate him...but Stern's no loser! If so...I wish I could be one just like him.

He has talent and he's no dummy. My wife would hate him...if she ever listened to him. I don't agree with him alot of times, but think he is funnier than shit. He just says what's on his mind and what many in his audience would love to say or do. He makes fun of himself as much as he does others.

It's rude, rank and sophomoric, but he's playing to an audience that digs that shit. Kind of the Family Guy of radio.

Howard Stern is a funny guy, but also ignorant, funny and ignorant at the same time. Sure he can rag on Steve Perry, but that was Perry back in 81? this is going back decades, the man is not the same as he was - in fact all you hear these days is how much of a nice guy Perry is. Talk about living in the past, sheesh. According to Stern, Perry is a douche, obviously Perry is still in Journey and ragging on nobodies still ;)

Besides, he really does look like Big Bird anyway! - good call Perry.

BJG, I can honestly say I've never laughed harder at some of the shows with Howard, and I've never been as grossed out by the same show on a different segment. I read the recaps every once in a while on Marksfriggin.com. I would have loved to have heard the Artie Lang blowup with his assistant or his admission he was lying all the time to everybody about going to a psychiatrist and was on drugs again and had been. It's entertaining, sad, and riveting all at the same time, his spiral downward and the group trying to help him and alternately being disgusted with him and his lying. I love the core cast of characters, Artie and Fred and Gary and loveeee Robin and Howard, and love the dynamics with their personalities and their dysfunctional relationships with each other. I don't get the gay duo of Richard and Sal, too much gay stuff going on re them and their antics. I hated to see Stuttering John leave when he went to Jay Leno as announcer.

What I love about his guests, they are more honest than the usual celebrity interviews. When they come on Howard, there's really a lot of sharing of information re their careers and honesty, not the usual formulaic Q&A pat answers.

That was absolutely classic! I've been wondering why I haven't heard that this week with the whole "fight" theme... unless I've missed it... because there's no way they wouldn't play it, it was huge. I've heard mostly the WXRK stuff though... maybe they're not doing 2006-present.

And he probably was jealous that Steve was making out with the hot blonde (I'm jealous of the hot blonde lol) because I'm sure there was not hot blonde waiting at home for him. Why you ask? Cause he is a dumb Fuck! Wow, do I feel better.. :D

You want to punch Howard Stern in the face b/c he called out Steve for being rude one time? Big Deal. I'm sure it happened. It's kind of funny. Perry was right.

There's plenty to punch Howard Stern in the face for, but for that? Steve Perry is a big boy. He doesn't need his loons all upset wanting to beat Howard Stern up b/c he was called a bad name by a mean boy.   How about punching Howard Stern in the face because he encouraged a misguided young woman to strip in his studio completely naked? No problem with that? I thought not.

Jana, yeah,l I do want to punch HS in the face. I have never liked him, but the shit that he was saying about Steve was the icing on the cake. I realize that Steve is a big boy. And yes, he shouldn't have made a comment like that to Howard. It was rude for him to say something like that to someone that he didn't know, But who hasn't said or did something that they shouldn't have? And it must have hurt his feelings to have Steve say something like that to him. But he really needs to let it go. :D

I didn't say I wanted to "beat him up" the man is freakin' huge. I'm 5'4", 120lbs, he could squash me this his thumb. I'm just saying that apparently the truth hurts. Maybe he did look like big bird. As for the girl that took her clothes off in his studio, thats on her, she didn't have to do that.

I love Howard. Any haters should watch Private Parts. The guy's a true American success story. Although I've caught snippets of him since the Sirius move and it hasn't seemed as good as it used to be. Paradoxically, I think the freedom to do ANYTHING has softened the impact of his best stuff. Kinda like seein a hot broad in lingerie is often sexier and more fun than the full b-day suit.

I looked up the recap for January 22, 2007 on howardstern.com. First of all, Robin just happened to remember it was Steve Perry's birthday? Either she is a big fan or that was a setup to talk about the incident in the first place. Regarding Howard, here's a direct quote from his own website:

"Howard then commented that he didn't like Steve, remembering that, when he was getting his start in radio, Steve came on his show and immediately referred to him as "Big Bird". Howard went on to admit that, in hindsight, the joke wasn't that hurtful, but that he still didn't appreciate the tone Steve used when he made it."

I agree that, while it was an accurate observation, it was not funny and someone like SP, who grew up being called hurtful names, should have known better. (I wonder if he forgot what that felt like - I imagine several years of having thousands of women screaming for you can have that effect on a guy  ) But if Howard didn't think it was that hurtful two years ago, why does he sound even more angry and resentful now?

Moose is dead on. Nobody beats Stern anywhere. Bob and Tom are fucks doodling along on soon to be dead terrestrial radio, along with Mark and Brian. Throw in that douche the Greaseman and the even more of a douche Imus, and they all wish they were Stern. Let's see, the highest paid celebrity in entertainment, 580 million for 5 years? I'd say he is doing something right.
