You need to get out more Larry :P  Playa del Carmen is on the Yucatan mainland, near the island of Cozumel in Mexico. It's a popular place for the cruise lines to take you for excursions. I've been there :P

Swine Flu is here in my town.

Postby ttango1 » Tue Apr 28, 2009 2:13 pm

1 Kid at Christ The Cornerstone Academy, less than mile down the street from me, was an original of the 4 people who were first reported to have swine flu in California.

Now 6 of his teachers are exhibiting symptoms. I'm going with the hand sanitizers and a combo of juice and 2 multi-vitamins. I ain't afraid of it, I'm just being precautious because I have plenty of nieces and nephews who are at ages where a flu would pose issues.

We lose 34,000 people a year to influenza. Follow the same steps you do during flu season. All will be fine.

Sorry, I know this is something to be fully aware of and pay attention to, but the media hype is a tad ridiculous. The regular old "seasonal" flu kills 36,000 people a year, spread that out over a year and that's almost 100 people a day...where's the media hype on that? Or all the other "epidemics" out there? It's just a bit dramatic IMO.

Yeah, that's how I feel about it too. I guess because some people get vaccinated for the other flu, they feel more "protected" and they aren't from this, but the fact it responds to anti-virals Im just not going to worry about it. When I watch the news and the people they interview and the sheer PANIC people have, it's sad! I mean we should ALWAYS take precautions not to get sick. My routines will all be the same. The only one I would worry about is my son who has asthma tendencies, and I worry about him when he has just a cold, so it would be no different. I can't even remember the last time I had the real flu. My daugthter had it once and they gave us all Tamiflu and we were fine. It's even hard to know whether you have a bad cold or the flu since the symptoms can be so similar. The numbers are not that huge when you look at the number of people living in this world. The living conditions in parts of Mexico suck, so I can imagine the close living quarters and the way they live has a lot to do with how sick they are getting. I can see how immuno-compromised, elderly or asthmatics would be worried, but they worry every year over the normal strains of flu we experience.

Turn off the media drama freaks on TV and call the CDC for the correct info. drama-free: 1-800-232-4636, there is a recording telling you all about the FAQ's about swine flu.

Or visit: www.cdc.gov/swineflu

I think the word "swine" is adding to the Schuttstorm ... the notion that we could be sick with something pigs also get is upping the freak factor.

Can you get infected if you work in Mexico at a pig farm where all the pigs are infected and you take no health precautions? If so, I have made some terrible life decisions.

Even now, the headlines proclaiming "FIRST UNITED STATES DEATH FROM SWINE FLU" are misleading because the boy was sick in Mexico and came to the US for treatment... Media bombast as usual
