I dislike that the re-recordings for the most part, but this song now sounds like Journey with Ross's Frontier's era sounding bass track. Too bad Smitty isn't on it too.
Oh, Neal's solo is great too.

Yeah, but Arnel's phrasing is a little off and Cain's keyboards suck on the new version. The synth is seriously weak.

Yeah I agree, the re-recorded hits sound pretty bad, compared to the originals. The vocals arent as good, most of the guitar and synthesizers parts are really weak, and the drums arent as strong. It was a bad idea re-recording the hits in the first place, Perry made those songs untouchable.

The vocals are pretty damn good, actually. Not necessarily better, though I prefer Arnel's take on "Open Arms." The guitar parts are fantastic, but Cain's synths are weak.

And since he produced the disc, you would think the synths would be the one thing that should sound spot on.

Open Arms with someone else singing other than Steve Perry - I guess my age is showing, but for me it is untouchable....

Not weak as in not loud, just lame. Not powerful. But I think he did better on DSB's synths this time around.

A lot of people think that, which is fine. I just think Arnel adds power to that power ballad that hadn't been there previously.

Didn't someone on here say it came down to time?
They had to make that Walmart deadline...
Gunbot wrote:For me , the song that I can only associate with SP is Who's crying now. I remember hearing it on the radio when Escape came out and I have never stopped hearing it. A/C radio seems to prefer it over open Arms and Faithfully, probably because it's a middle of the road tune. A ballad that has a nice edge to it. I have probably heard it every SINGLE day on the radio, here in L.A. for the last 14 years.

I thought the rerecordings were a bad idea and didn't even listen to them for months after buying the CD. My point was that it's cool that Ross finally got a crack to BGTY, and funny how to me, it sounds more like Journey than the original.

Listened to it through once. That was enough. Have the originals. Say no more.

So, now the band has re-recorded these songs, what, for the sole purpose of having something to package the new CD with? If a person heard these re-records, and wanted to down-load them, unless they go off the beaten path to the Wal Mart site, they're going to end up down-loading the songs from iTunes, or something like it - and those songs will be the original recording with Perry. What, exactly, does Journey intend to do with these re-records?!?

Neal had said something about the royalty percentage on the songs being greater with Walmart. It doesn't matter, like you said people would just download the original on Itunes anyway.
It was a one shot deal for the band to make one last run and they got some decent cash out of it. It won't happen again so I wouldn't worry about it.

I have been meaning to bring this up for some time, although its difficult to discuss the re-records since most here have " Never listened to them" for fear of turning into a Frog or that Perry will come and punch their cat or something.Anyway, I think Ross kicks Ass on this song, like he has something to prove. I also prefer Arnels version of OTY, he adds a little more enthusiasm and power to it.

I pulled it out the other day. I hadn't listened to them since I bought Revelation. I agree. I like his Only the Young. I enjoy his Lights.
Technically Perry's Faithfully is perfection, not only vocally and in delivery but also in the weariness he gives emotionally to the song of a singer on the road, and I listen to it a lot as Faithfully is one of my all-time favorite songs and one of his best vocals ever. But I have Arnel's version on my iPod b/c I love running to it. What he lacks in polish on the song, I love the sheer power of his vocals and the crispness of his vocals. Burn me at the stake for listening to a rerecord more than once.
