I can only assume that you mean selling boatloads of albums and Top 10 hits. Yup, he did do that. I concede the point.

I learned long ago that "sophisticated" and "mature" are code for "boring" and "failure." ROR is sophisticated and TBF is mature.

They just happened to have a core sound and honestly, some visual/cultural/intangible kinda appeal that would transcend the ages, for whatever reason(s). You can say the band truly changed direction for Escape and that's probably at least partially true, but ROR is an unabashed complete departure from Journey's form save for maybe BGTYS, Suzanne, and maybe you can reach for IBAWY if you liken it to After the Fall (kinda the same bluesy groove goin on). I can't speak for Madonna cuz I don't listen to her garbage. I think Madonna has stayed relevant more because she is a pop culture icon for many reasons rather than having some kind of great musical adaptability or grand vision.

And yes, I fully realize that Bruce and U2 have experimented a bit with their sound... U2 had some electronica noodling going on in the late 90s-early 00s and Bruce has fucked around a bit with his folk side, but thats always been an element to him anyway. Anyway, on the whole, their sound/formula remains largely the same, imo. It's not a bad thing, I just don't think they did anything special to "stay relevant" other than Bono's Messiah Complex maybe.

Well with regards to U2 and Bruce, especially the latter, this(your) argument proves how far good or great writing can go. No one can write a song like Springsteen, period. Talk about meaningful lyrics? Sure there are the car songs, girl songs, movie songs, but the other core tunes, the politically deft ones, the war songs, the movement songs- those all trump the "wedding photographs, kiss me softly moonlight night" cheese that Friga offers up every other song. They wrote Out of Harms Way, and that was a well written deep song. Too bad you have to wait every 7 cd's to hear one. Fuck, Bruce wrote that song The Wrestler, on a favour to mickey Rourke and look what that song accomplished? A golden Globe award and a charting single, all put together with an acoustic guitar, piano and mic.

Jesus guys, she's new! Can we please be little nice? At least let her find her feet!
Why treat life as a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in an attractive & well-preserved body? Get there by skidding in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand, chocolate in the other, body totally worn out, screaming WOOHOO! What a ride!

I agree... songs with a message will reach people and transcend time... but how do you feel about Madonna... surely you don't feel she is writing timeless, well-crafted, "deep" songs as well?

Oh Hell no she isn't, but that's not her. She is about pop and party, dance and drama. She does what she does well, and although I don't dance, when I hear a tune from her in a club, it sounds good.

I read up on her a little- that's why my opinion of her talent is what it is. She plays every instrument, and writes all the lyrics. She is a wealth of talent to be sure. A definite deserving member of the HOF.

The "Rock and Roll" fucking hall of fame??? Come on! Maybe a Pop HOF, but RnR? You call her shit "rock and roll." We're talking about "rock and roll!" not poppy, dance, material girl shit.

What the hell is the definition of "Rock and Roll" anyway????? That could be a thread of its own. What is your definition of Rock and Roll?

When it'd been a long time since Led Zep Rock n Rolled, when it was still Rock n Roll to Billy Joel, when Bob Segar wanted his old time rock n roll...on and on...I doubt they had "Like a Virgin" in mind.

Oh...and Street Talk is superior! The B side of the album was much better than A with all the hits on it. Might have thought differently if ROR was a Steve Perry release.

Captured by the Moment is one of my favorite songs sung by Steve Perry. He had a great voice in a lower register. Wish he'd have sung more songs in that range.

The "Rock Hall" name is as deceptive as an ugly-ass broad with a name like "Desiree." It should be called the "Music" hall of fame. Hell, even some acts I LOVE that have been included (soul artists/vocal groups) are in there and that's not truly like "rock n roll" either...

I agree with ewhmatt or whatever his name is/means. It's a music HOF in name only. There are a lot of acts in there who aren't "rock n roll" Pete. Were the Beatles rock n roll? Was Johnny Cash rock? Hell, is Prince isn't really "rock" although dude could play it as good as anyone if he wanted. Too many people get caught up in name only. Journey really isn't rock. They are a pop/rock band. It doesn't mater to me, the talent housed in there is well talented. My point was Madonna is in the upper half of that museum with regards to talent, like her or not.

I felt that Street Talk was a decent solo album, but I didn't enjoy the musical direction and the lack of collaboration from truly accomplished writers and lyricists. ROR wasn't, musically, as great as what had come before and what would come after, but the writing and Perry's vocals were truly amazing. Vocally, it was Journey's best album, in my opinion, with some fantastic harmonies. It also gave us the greatest power ballad ever in "Why Can't This Night Go On Forever." "Positive Touch" is also a favorite of mine; not a fan of the saxophone, though. It could have been easily improved with a Neal solo.

Gideon - it's hard to think of a more accomplished writer than Randy Goodrum. Check out his bio.

http://www.randygoodrum.com/bio.html

You might want to check out some of his albums as well.

I was reading about his contribution to SP's 2009 spring release and it continued to say that "Randy is currently writing new material for an upcoming project of Steve's, as well. More on that later" - anyone care to guess what the reaction to that will be around here? As Penny Lane would say, "It's all happening".

Wow - this to me is the biggest indicator that something new is on the forefront...Obviously the Spring deadline was missed, but something's definitely in the works....Wonder if Steve Smith will play on the album...ha
