That lets me out then.I love his music and know he is a great person. But that is as far as it goes.I would love to meet him but know that will never happen.Non of us are perfect and that goes for Mr Perry as well.

That person needs help big time

ok, i'm disqualified.

In my time here on the board, I don't perceive the definition of a 'loon' as what you describe, Yak. I'm a self-professed loon, but I'm certainly not any of those things. I put SP up on a pedestal because of the way he moves me with his voice. When I watch him sing, there's something about him that transcends other performers. It's used a lot here, but the word 'emote' is the best way I can describe what I mean. He does it like no other. It's not just his voice, we hear his soul in some of the songs.

Is he fallible? Sure, we all are. Did he screw up a lot with regard to the band? Perhaps. But there is no other performing artist in history that moves me the way he does. I oooh and awww over him in lots of his pictures, but that's just silly girl stuff (and we know it drives the guys here crazy). No one will ever come close to touching me with a voice the way SP does, and that's why I consider myself a loon. Just a somewhat sensible one.

Emote is the perfect word, Donna, and his delivery of a song is unparalleled and the way he commits to each song he sings and pours everything he has into it is magical.

You're right, Donna, you're a normal loon, the kind every singer has, the female fans that love not only their favorite singer's voice and stage persona but also have a slight crush on that singer at a certain time in their life watching them perform. I'm more of a loon for another singer, who was my favorite singer from '85 to '96 and even now as he's older when he performs I melt a little. His voice is unique and I love his performances, and I love watching videos of him performing. When he was criticized by other fans over the splitup of his band I never took offense by the comments even with my loon-acy over him. All artists who are truly creative I'm sure can be difficult, driven, and demanding, etc. Who's to argue. We get great music from them. Nor do all bands last as long as we fans want them to b/c the band situation is volatile with strong personalities and egos.

But the over-the-top Perry loons are the ones who almost feel as if he's in their life and obssess and worry about his hurt feelings and perceived slights of him and search for very personal info on him. Obsessive behavior defines an over-the-top loon.

Steve Perry is my favorite singer of all time, and the voice that I appreciate above all others. For his talents, I have nothing but admiration and respect. Even as a man, I recognize that he is classy insofar as that he keeps his personal feelings towards Neal and the rest out of the press.

The only reason that I have been outspoken and critical of his personal decisions is that it seemed to me that few people wanted to confront the fact that he was easily as culpable for the mistakes made as Neal or Jon. In fact, in my opinion, he was moreso. And so for shunting the blame off to Neal and villifying him and Jon, I felt it my sacred duty to heap Perry's share back on him.

Thus is the reasonable conclusion: he has/had a beautiful voice, and coupled with his control of it and strength of will, guided the band to a multiplatinum millions-of-albums-selling career. However, he is not the sole reason for their success and was the source of much consternation and problems within the band.

That's where I stand, anyway.
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'

Same here! He's still my all-time favorite vocalist, he's got a unique vocal mix of tone/delivery/feeling that is just one of a kind. And to find out that he is is a real nice, funny, down to earth guy was icing on the cake. That is one thing that all 3 of my faves have in common, the ability to deliver a ballad with soul and a rocker with passion. Music, for me, is all about feeling, I don't care how much range a singer has, whether it's a ballad or a rocker, I want to feel the song. :) I will except no less. That's why I love concert dvds and live shows! :D

Ok Jana, spill it girl, can't leave us hanging, who?

I agree. A loon is not someone who commits crimes or gets obsessive-compulsive in their passion for an artist. A loon is just someone who sometimes acts a little looney about their passions (i.e. buying multiple concert tickets to follow a band around the country).

For example, this guy who was in the Blades Of Glory movie portrayed more of a nutcase than a loon:

But since there is really no set definition, there is no perfect way of explaining what a loon is. However, I think it's sufficient to say that there are a lot of Perry Loons who hangout on this forum.

Loon, probably as I live for the day he sings again as I believe he will, because I have been listening to him since 1983 and never got to see him live. Do I think Journey sux without him? No, I still love to see the band live as I like to do at least once a year. I think Neal is absolutely incredible and I also think SP has a voice that no one else ever has. Do I think he does no wrong? No, but I will say with a step child big in hollywood business, that is a back stabbing business and no I personally would have no part of!! I can not ever blame Perry for walking away from that business especially after the monetary deal he got out of it. All of us are crazy if we think that we won't do the same. Touring is very hard business to live in and never getting to be home gets very old believe me!! I could never do it for no matter how much money I received. Do I want to meet Perry? Yes, I would love to get to have a 30 minute sit down to let him know how much of an impact his singing has made on my life!! Loon? I don't know you be the judge.
Come back Steve Perry!!

I can go along with all of this, but also add that in terms of 'mistakes' or perceived mistakes, the difference between Perry and NS and JC is that the latter have been making public decisions regarding the band for 12+ years post Perry. So they have much more to be scrutinized over versus a person that has all but retired.

I may get kicked off this board for saying so, but I'm probably one of the only living people who thinks Perry is the greatest singer of all time, that doesn't necessarily want to hear new music from him...GASP! Unless the quality of voice is still there at his age, then no, I don't want to hear something that is just okay for the sake of hearing him. I know most just want to hear him one more time, but for me, I don't have that need unless I can be assured it is up to the standard that he set himself. I know that sounds selfish...guilty as charged.

I guess yoiu could call me a loon with issues 8) 8)

I've always loved his voice. I still think he's cute...even thought pudgy Perry was cute (even though I was a bit surprised)!

Does that make me a loon?

Am I a Perry Loon?...HELL YEAH! And so what?!?!

I've been reading through these posts and it seems to me there are some serious denial issues going on here. What? As soon as someone shines a light on the issue the Loons start to scatter like roaches or something? Not me. As far as I'm concerned SMFP can walk on water - I can't prove it, but I'm pretty sure he can. I firmly believe Perry can do no wrong. Anyone who says they've been done wrong by Perry MUST themselves be wrong by definition. As far as I'm concerned Steve Perry ain't never been wrong - EVAH! I have a deep abiding fondness and affection for that little guy with the big voice. I really do. I am a fan of his work. As a rule I don't look for Perry news and sighting, but I relish every tidbit that gets posted here on MR.

And another thing... I've about had it with these "I just want him to be happy living his life" bull crap Loons! This Loon wants Perry to be happy if and only if his being happy includes singing (for public consumption) again. Otherwise this Loon wishes SMFP to walk by day in a fever. I want him to toss and turn at night and wake up crying in a cold, cold sweat until he gets his new music released.

 Perhaps I've said too much. Anyway, yeah. I'm a Perry Loon.

12 Steps of Loons Anonymous

1. We admitted we were powerless over Perry- that our lives had become unmanageable.

2. Came to believe that only Perry coming out of retirement could restore us to sanity.

3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of Perry as we understood Him.

4. Made a searching and fearless musical inventory of the other lead singers of Journey.

5. Admitted to God, to ourselves and to the MR forum the exact nature of Neal’s wrongs.

6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of Neal’s character.

7. Humbly asked God to remove Perry’s vocal problems.

8. Made a list of all persons who had harmed Perry, and became willing to bad mouth them all.

9. Made direct contact with Perry and photograph him wherever possible, except when to do so would injure ourselves or get us arrested for stalking.

10. Continued to take Neal’s inventory and when we were wrong say gross, nasty and disrespectful things about our fellow MR forum members who disagree with us.

11. Sought through prayer and meditation and Mocha Buss Pass Lady videos to improve our conscious contact with Perry as we understood Him, praying only for the opportunity to meet him and the power to convince him to record new music again.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps and listening to TBF & FTLOSM daily, we tried to carry this message to Journey fans everywhere and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
