OT: Trailer for the new Sherlock Holmes Movie

Postby Peartree12249 » Fri May 22, 2009 2:19 pm

Guy Ritchie directed Robert Downey Jr. (Holmes) and Jude Law (Watson) in this new reinvented version of Sherlock Holmes. It's certainly is not Basil Rathbone or Jeremy Brett both who gave excellent performances as the famous detective. I'm a huge Robert Downy Jr. fan, and I've also a fan of Sherlock Holmes movies, so I will definitely plan to see this movie.

So what do you think?

After watching Jeremey, it's hard to picture Downey as Holmes, especially when you look at he height difference. The books portrayed Holmes as tall and lanky and Brett fit the description rather well. Here it looks like Watson is taller than Holmes. I'll watch it though as I do enjoy the novels but this seems like it will contain a good dose of Romance which was never a theme in the books. Holmes loved Irene for her ability to spar with him intellectually, not in a physical sense.

I think this film is actually based on a Sherlock Holmes comic book series, and plays up elements of the character (sword fighting, romantic life) that were only alluded to in the actual Conan Doyle books.
As for Downey's portrayal..I'm sure he'll do fine.
Holmes is already the most portrayed character in film history..what's one more?

Since Brett's passing, several actors have already donned the deerstalker cap, including Rupert Everett, Jonathan Pryce, and even Max Headroom himself.
Interesting fact..Brett used to play Watson opposite Charlton Heston's Holmes in a stage version of 'The Sign of Four' (a role Charlton later reprised in a TV movie).

For me Brett will always be the definitive SH. I agree it will be difficult for anyone to compete with his SH. I don't think that's what Guy Ritchie is going for here. From the trailer, this new movie certainly seems much more action oriented. They also seem to be working the sex appeal angle quite a bit. It looks like Ritchie took the basic story and turned it on it's ear for the 21st century. Should be interesting. RDJ is just ballsy enough to pull it off. As an actor he's pretty fearless.

I'm also looking forward to seeing the new Johnny Depp movie "Public Enemies" opening in July. Depp is another actor who always amazes me with his performances. I have a lot of respect for him. He is so good looking he could just phone it in and still get work, but he always looks for challenging projects and doesn't let himself get stuck doing the same type of character. Christian Bale is also in this movie as Melvin Purvis. While Bale seems like an A--hole in real life, he is an excellent actor. I have high expectations for this film.

Johnny Depp and Robert Downey, Jr., two amazing actors who always take eclectic roles. I would watch even a bad movie just to watch their performances. Heath Ledger was taking that same career path with brilliant performances, such as Brokeback Mountain and the Batman movie.

A good case in point is The Libertine. A bad movie starring Depp and John Malkovich a couple of acting heavyweights that couldn't save this dreary picture. But if you're a big Depp fan you'd still want to see.

Love Sherlock Holmes...had a complete set of the stories! I like Robert Downey Jr. (still remember that movie with Jamie, Andrew and him)...but I wouldn't cast him as Holmes.

After seeing the clip, I wondered if they'd even read the books 'cause it seemed so [/i]different.

Noble Cause mentioned this storyline might have more connection with the SH comics, which I've never read.

Jeremey Brett was Sherlock Holmes as far as I'm concerned. To each his own. I have the remastered collection from Granada, and it fits the bill for me.

I saw the preview the other day and saw nothing in it that remotely reminded me of Sherlock Holmes except for the Holmes and Watson names. I don't even think I saw them doing any investigating. Could be good! :)

Used to love comic books!

Yes, Jeremey Brett was Holmes for me. In fact, all the mystery series like Sherlock Holmes and Cadfael that was done for PBS (or was it A&E) were great IMO.

Was just thinking how the new Downey Jr. movie looks like an offshoot of this flick.
More in the vein of Indiana Jones-style 50's pulp magazines..

You know everytime I say Robert can't or shouldn't have a role he proves me wrong. Loved Holmes all of my life. I will give this a chance.
The last line in the trailer was hysterical :D
