Anyways, it's an opinion, and he's welcome to it. Meanwhile, I would contend that anything post-Perry is far greater than that miserable three minutes. That was TBF-era Perry trying to dominate a song through vocals, casting Neal and the others in the shadow, and that's why it failed. Of the five men there, during TBF, Perry's instrument was by far the weakest. He should have stuck to the formula of the rest of the album; where the instruments and melodies would compensate for his fragile voice.
Wait.. I thought you liked Trial By Fire. Guess I was mistaken. I think it failed because there was no tour When WYLAW first came out they played it all the time in my town. They played Message of Love as well.

I thtink he was talking about one song specifically, not the complete work.

It would kill Splashy to ever admit there were some good songs after Steve left that are better than anything with Perry. It will never happen. He's incapable. I still absolutely love Turn Down the World Tonight, beautiful, beautiful song, and there's several on Arrival that I love to this day and none of those songs make me miss Perry. Augeri and Arnel own them and were very moving with their vocals to such great melodies. I can't stomach Baby I'm A Leavin You and skip it every time and there's another song on TBF where Perry's vocals are rough and it didn't sound good. Skip every time. The rest of the songs I liked even though his voice wasn't the same on a few songs compared to ROR. The hollow sound some talk about, that's what bothered me when I first bought TBF. When Perry would hit the higher notes the sound bothered my ears. I couldn't figure it out b/c that's never been the case with his voice with the range he sings in. But it was the hollowness that was talked about that. There wasn't as much power in those high notes. But I got used to it and now it doesn't bother me when I listen to TBF.

Not in the setlist again last night despite everyone saying it's their favorite ballad off of Revelation. What gives?

I'm hoping they work on it and throw it in by the time they come to Florida. It's one of my favorite Journey songs: The haunting, melancholy piano intro sets the mood and Arnel's husky vocals work here beautifully with Neal's guitar and Jon on piano thoughout. A song that always makes me sentimental listening to it, great melody and lyrics.

That's right.

TBF is easily my favorite album. Everyone was in top form, and Perry's voice (while weaker than previous works) was still good enough to deliver strong choruses and melodies.

I hold the album in such esteem because Perry's voice was no longer powerful enough for him to attempt to monopolize the songs themselves.
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'

I think TDWTN hasn't seemed to work live for whatever reason, be it performance-related or just the way it goes over live. Some songs, even great ones, work better in the studio than in concert. I think there are some performance issues for the band here, especially with the backing vocals... I remember hearing it for the first time and wondering how the hell they were gonna pull that off live. It's also pretty heavily layered with Neal's sustainer and feedback tricks, which aren't as easy to consistently pull off the exact same way live.

I do agree, it's a great song that I'd love to hear live. Far more so than Where Did I Lose Your Love or After All These Years, that's for damn sure.

After all these years is quickly becoming like Open Arms to me. Thank god SoCal stations stick to Who's crying Now and Faithfully when they play Journey Ballads. To be honest I still haven't heard one song from Revelation yet on the local stations. Even on the store muzak systems, I usually here ROR or SP solo songs more than anything else (IBAWY, Suzanne, Foolish Heart, etc.)

Me too. I mean yeah AATY was great the first time I heard it live in Vegas, lyrics are neat and all, but lately if I hear it on the radio in random places I feel like I need insulin, lol.

I heard NWA all summer last summer on Cleveland's 98.5 WNCX. I've heard other songs a few times, but not any kind of consistent repeats like NWA had.

I heard NWA as Bumper music one day for the Mark and Brian Show on KLOS. That's been it. In reality though, look at the clips being put up on Journey fan sites from last night's show. NWA is the only Rev cut and nothing else, it's always the classics that get thrown up on youtube, like Revelation never existed. We know homeboy does a good SP impression on DSB but how about Wildest Dreams, Change for the better..Where's the promo for those songs?

It makes me wonder how many people will buy the next Journey album without seeing DSB listed on the tracklist.

Sometimes, GB, I really feel like you're rooting for them to fail at every angle and looking only for the negatives. Basically it's one guy uploading these clips for this particular concert. Maybe one other person. The fansites are taking the clips as they're uploaded.

Worst Journey song pre-1998.

Possibly, but still better than anything new since 1998.

Mad, are you kidding? 'Higher Place' is such a great song and Revelation had several songs that were better than 'Baby I'm a Leaving You' ('Never Walk Away', 'Sunshower', etc)! SP is by far my favourite singer, but that doesn't mean (for me at least) that just because his vocals are on a song that it automatically makes the song itself superior. Most of the pre-1998 Journey songs are their best work, but they have written a few standouts since then.

Another Like a Sunshower fan. We're so rare.

Basically, I would take every Revelation song and most definitely every Arrival song over Baby I'm a Leavin You. Not a good song, but, especially, that song is just not a Journey song. So out of place.

Okay, how about this one. I predict if Perry releases another album, it won't even make gold and for the record I can't stand FTLOSM.
I'm not really a solo Perry fan or a Perryless Journey fan. Schon, Perry, Cain/ Rolie all collaborating together are my Journey.
Not an SP loon or an AP hater, just selective with my listening. I did buy Arrival and Revelation, just not quite there for me, if you know what I mean but Do think SA and AP are great vocalist, I just PREFER the Journey I grew up with, the same way the news fans can't imagine Journey without AP.

I agree with all of that except, of course, I'm happy with Arnel and Journey. Classic Journey up to 83 with Perry my favorite.

I was addressing your negative slant on little facts re Journey like you're enjoying it or looking for things to happen negatively. It's your sthick. I know. Carry on. I will carry on with mine, defender of Neal.

It's your shtick. I know. Carry on. I will carry on with mine, defender of Neal.

It's not quite as bad as some of the other stuff that floats around here, you have to admit. I do try to present a viable argument most of the time.

I have to say that I find Gunbot's posts to be the most fair I have seen on here and he always seems to back them up. I for one appreicate his point of view.

Maybe the question we all ought to be asking ourselves. Is Steve Perry's voice now better than the TBF era. So many reports say he has it back. And even if it's not, was the TBF voice better than most singers out there today anyhow.

GREAT question. Everything I've heard says it's stronger than TBF. Frontiers/ROR era, is what is said. As to your other question, even if that's not true, the TBF Steve Perry is better than any singer out there today, that I've heard. Even if the range isn't what it was in 1978 or 1985, that doesn't mean that all else considered(still huge range, tone, phrasing, control and emotive ability), he still isn't the best singer on the planet.

Other singers can hit SOME of the notes he hit, but none of them can match his complete, overall, vocal prowess.

Again, GREAT question!

OK madsplash, since i seem to be on a roll here, i have another question in responce to SP's new comeback CD due out soon or whenever. I don't think there's any question he's been recording, that is documented. BUT, will he trick every1 and put recorded tracks he's had for along time and had recored. say 10 years ago or so on it. He wouldn't have to tell any1 or say a word. It's a studio release and his project. Now, if what you said is true and his voice sounds as good as ROR, E.T.C., at 60 years old, wouldn't you be just about as excited as (Kris Allen on AI). I would think SP would get every level of media-buzz and marketing issue's out there to show the world (HEY, IM BACK AND I CAN SING LIKE NO OTHER).

It would be hard for it to be worse. Considering every take took forever and he knew he couldn't tour, I'm sure that rest and vocal surgery made it better.

Easily the dumbest thing I've ever read on here. The guy didn't perform one time behind that album. What could you possibly be basing this on? A studio album? You're dumber than I thought, and that's saying a lot.

People are too hard on Baby, I'm.... Leaving You. It was just a fun song, a throw-in. Not even listed on the album setlist. Geesh ...

Actually Saint John, you may be really wrong on this one. Put SP's TBF voice on another project (Creed, REM, E.T.C.) and change every aspect towards the overall approach such as direction, writing and mostly style and you know what, you have a monster album. Journey made a mistake with TBF. SP's voice should have told them to sell out to sony and try what i'm getting at. I know there was a grammy invite on that project, but it's the no balls approach they took, that's all. SP's voice on that album could have been killer if used totally different.

And you're more of dumbass than I thought, and that's saying a lot. Tell us again about your inside knowledge of what went on during the making of TBF.

You never say anything new, other than flapping your twinkie hole. C'mon man. Bring what you claim to know, or shut the hell up about it.
