Now that he found some success with Journey, maybe AP can re-release that album. A lot of artists do that here in the States. From what I can see, succeeding in his homeland is one of Arnel's biggest ambitions in life, career wise.

Wow, that's amazing indeed.

As much as I love Perry, John Farnham is far greater in terms of long jeopardy. Much longer career, Monker is 100% right. He's barely lost anything, Perry didn't last that long before his voice fell apart.

Farnham is the best of all time IMO, of all time, no doubt about it. At least people around these parts know who John is, where is Perry is regarded as somebody who was once good in the early 80's, and pretty much forgotten about now since Arnel has hit the scene anyway. John Farnham is still the voice, still the voice.

Yes he is good at mimicking and has a wonderful voice, but John went ahead and did the change up on the composition. You have to give points for originality and creativity and that's exactly what Farnham has done. Arnel is a chameleon but how much fun can it be to drive someone else's car? Eventually you'll want your own ride, won't you?

I am not arguing with you about Farnham, what I am saying is, what Arnel can do is not easy. You need special talent to sound like the original artist, and most of the time it sounds better than the original (based from the youtube comments).

You're quick to point out that it's mimicking but my point is how many singers do you know who come close to what he can do.

You tube comments mean ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! you will find the majority of people on Youtube will give bigger props to somebody like Ricky Martin or Justin Timberlake over Perry, Pineda, you name it... so that really doesn't mean anything mate. I like Pineda, great singer, however there are a few singers he can come close to emulate, but the likes of Mercury, Farnham, Perry were far greater singing their own material, and there really isn't any two ways about it.

But how many singers even worry abut singing other people's catalogs? Most concentrate on their own stuff with a few covers thrown in here or there. I understand that AP had to do it out of necessecity, I'm just saying even if Arnel sounds better to than the original, It's not going to change the reality that these people were the originals and have lots of money and fame from these songs. That part cant be carried over, no matter how well AP covers the song.

You are forgetting he's not from here. He released an album in the Philippines but he was not as successful. The cover songs were his bread and butter...to put food on the table.

Bleh.

One of my other favorite 'not Journey songs'. I'll take either version....just keep Arnel away.

Farnham is a great singer, but he isn't "The Voice".

I'll put Perry Houston 81 against anything Farnham's ever done. He doesn't have even close to the power SP has in his voice. He does have a killer upper register, but no better than SP's. I love Little River Band, but he came in and sang their cheesiest hits.

Bottom line: Farnham is one of the best singers ever and Perry is THE best ever.

You tube comments meant something to those people who posted them, be it negative or positive, or else they will not waste their time posting, including comments coming from the trouble makers.

When they released Revelation, the album received very very positive reviews and praises for Arnel. Remember the "they seemed to have taken rock vitamins" comment? People here were up and arms that Perry with Journey did not receive that many positive comments from those same people, i.e NY times, etc; ( this was based from the comments made by members of this board).

When it comes to achievements, I never compared Arnel with the levels of Mercury or Farnham. I was just saying that Arnel has a special talent that you will not see from many singers.

Arnel has been with Journey for a little over a year but you cannot deny the fact that as a frontman, he accomplished a lot in such a short time. The Chile awards, platinum album, sold out concert, etc.

May I remind people of this scene from their FIRST concert (whether you like him or not), this says a lot.

Andrew...I will forgive you for that statement, and take it as "I really like him, but of course we know Steve Perry is the greatest singer of all time". I completely agree with you!

Sorry, but that implies that Perry actually still sings. Perry's 'best' lasted about 10yrs of his career. They are about the same age and Farnham has been having hits since he was what? 7? And, is planning a 'comeback' this year with an album and tour. Farnham has hardly lost anything over the 50+ years of his career. That's the resume' of a 'best ever'.

Thats a fact. Perry only gets so much praise because of that tone he was born with. Well, and how he used it. Farnham's voice is intact because they didnt tour him to death and I am assuming he took better care of him self. Perry might have had a go around with the drink and drugs there for a bit. Hell, it was the mid 80's, everyone was coked up is seems. Not saying Perry was but it was rumored. Coke will ruin your cords in a bad way and alcohol will as well. Hell, living in the Ohio Valley will ruin your cord because you are trying to sing half clogged up all the damn time !!!

Perry was "born" with that gift... but he also had to LEARN to maintain it... to suggest he simply "woke up and sang" is incredibly inaccurate... Perry's use of vocal technique is/was SO GOOD that to the untrained eye he made what what came out of his mouth look effortless... and the suggestion that he ruined his voice with "coke and drugs", given the grueling Journey schedule of the 80's, AND the catalog he had to sing from... that just doesn't add up...

Perry's "aloofness" towards fans and media after each show (remember that?) has been well documented and explained by Perry himself.

Further, if Perry HAD ruined his voice with "coke and drugs", given the grueling Journey schedule of the 80's, AND the catalog he had to sing from .. wouldn't that make him even MORE of a god amongst mere mortals??

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

My only question about overuse of Perry's voice would be this. Seeing as Perry had a major part in writing this High maintenance catalog of music, why didn't he tone it down a bit. It's not like some one else wrote and said "Well, Steve, we know it's a strain but do you think we get a few octaves higher on that. I think Steve tended to show off a little bit and we got used to it as the norm.

That said, I understand it's an issue with age as well as wear and tear. It's going to be interesting to hear Arnel's voice in a few years and see how it holds up under the same catalog.

At this age, the band really isn't about new music as their mainstay. It's just a reality at this stage of the game. Though, that would be a nice plus for them and nice for the fans, a new hit record. Their bread and butter is touring. They are a touring band. If Arnel keeps the crowds coming with Journey and he can hold up to it, it won't matter whether they have a hit album or not.

Actually, I will take this as a grain of salt, because I know you are very Perry biased, and so am I in fact :) however! as a singer myself, I can confidently say that Perry's power isn't or was anymore greater than Johns, saying it's far greater isn't the case. I am very hard pressed to find who has more power, because they are both very good at certain things. But Farnham as always been strong, and honestly I don't see how Perry's power was greater, having seen Farnham LIVE, you will be hard pressed to find a better singer, maybe as good? but not a better singer. I think both are equally as good.

Steve Perry isn't the best singer ever man, because you have singers like George Michael, that guy has absolutely the finest voice you will ever hear. I think when you get to a certain stage of singing, I don't think there is anyone who clearly better. They may as good, but not better because all the great singers of all time have their strong and weak points, and qualities of their own.

Hey mate,

Oh no doubt about it. I just don't listen or care for Youtube comments, it's that simple. And I agree with you about Arnel, he's a talent alright, one of the best singers around at the moment, one of the most powerful singers anyway, lots of power and range, and a very nice tone as well, we can't deny that he is the best choice Journey could of made.
