Yep, you read correctly, The USPS is thinking about going to a 5-day work week....

The public is behind this, the business sector is not.

I wish they'd drop down to 0 day a week so some other responsible company would pick it up and turn it around to something better.
They have the WORSE tracking system,,, slower than both UPS and FedEx, with higher rates. I say Fuck em and let them have 7 days off

I fail to see why we even need government in charge of our mail in the first place.

But how do you really feel, B?

I'm still waiting for my replacement debit card. The bank mailed it on 5/15. 13 days later and I'm still waiting. That is a little unreasonable. I'm getting notices left and right from places with which I have automatic withdrawls (car ins., health club, etc).

I heard this same story not long ago, except then they said they were cutting Saturday, which makes more sense.

Its not slow tracking
its WORTHLESS tracking. It gives you an update once its been delivered, which defeats the whole puporse of tracking.

SLOW deliveries. higher rates,... and they lose stuff more often than fedex and ups combined.

Add to that the fact that they keep raising the prices on the stamps annually now,, and you have it in a nutshell why I think they need to go away.

We've never had Saturday delivery. Always been Mon-Fri, period. LOL BJG, US/Canada normal mail is ridiculous, some of my friends can get something I've sent in 3-4 days, others 2.5 to 3 weeks.

1) Most businesses that aren't retail aren't open on weekends. Monday - Friday are the important mail days.
2) personal mail and bills are largely handled by internet, email, and automatic withdrawl anyway, so nixing weekend mail altogether (since there isn't mail on Sunday anyway) is hardly going to make a difference on the customer end.
3) because I said so.

Why Tuesday? What's the logic there? :?:

Tuesday is the slowest(lightest) day of the week, traditionally.
As far as Sundays, just because your local P.O. isn't open, and the is no delivery doesn't mean there isn't mail to process....distribution plants and clerks, and truck drivers work on Sundays...

Either day: Tuesday or Saturday means that come Monday, during a non-holiday - there will be 3X as much mail to deliver is the SAME AMOUNT of time. And on a holiday week(where monday is off) - assuming Tuesday is the day the USPS drops - Come Wednesday there will be 4X as much to deliver is the SAME AMOUNT of time....

It IS ridiculous and I blame a large part on the carriers. This is not to say they all suck, I'm sure there are decent effiencet ones, but MAN, I've run into some AWFUL ones. One was so bad I actually called the USPS trying to lodge a very serious nasty complaint. When I called, they told me since their computers were down, they were unable to take complaints at that time.

The dude was just flat out NOT delievering mail because it was too late at night and he wanted to go home! It was during Christmas time, and I got no less than 8-10 people calling me going "Did you move? I sent you a card and it came back." One of these people lived 8 minutes away, one zip code over from me! This is how I figured out what was going on. I KNEW the mail was coming because I'd seen the guy arriving every day between 6:00 and 7:00 pm. But all my mail was getting returned to sender.

Then could they not just save themselves the headache and the expense of the overtime OR the extra carriers regular time they will end up paying by having to deliver 4x the amount by just leaving it the way it is?

Our tax dollars at work - pay more, get less. I love this country more and more each passing day. At least they're doing completely unnecessary road repairs on several major roads to make my commutes more troublesome.

You aren't grasping the concept....They want to drop a day so the carriers will have to do, in essense, 2 or 3 days work in ONE day.

Meanwhile some of us have roads in desperate need of fixing, to the point where driving on them is a hazard to your vehicle and there's not much way of avoiding the damage at all. And well, no sign of them being fixed at all.

Yeah, newsflash for ya....the USPS receives absolutely ZERO tax dollars. All revenue comes from the selling of USPS services. Thanksmuch.

I once had a mailman that would delivery the mail one address off down the entire street. In other words, everyone would get their next-door-neighbor's mail. Every day!!

When I was a kid, our mail guy used to bring stuff not only to the wrong house, but the wrong streets. Like, say my house number was 20... house number 20, one block over would get our mail, and we'd get theirs. I assume this went on up and down my street, everyone getting the mail from the people one block over with their same house number.

I'm trying to remember if this was the same mail guy my dog wanted to kill. :?:

All I know is, post from Australia to the UK takes 5 working days to be delivered, and vice-versa. Post from Australia to the USA takes 7-97 days to be delievered, and between 14 and 102 days from the USA to Australia, in my experience. Two of those days are in Australia. :D S2M can correct me if I am wrong, but I assume that only part of one day is it in the hands of your local postman.

My postie asked me yesterday what happened to my smoochy cat, as he hadn't been waiting at the postbox to greet him. He was really upset to hear Onslow had died; apparently he was something of a local postie celebrity, making a change from all the barking/biting dogs.
Why treat life as a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in an attractive & well-preserved body? Get there by skidding in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand, chocolate in the other, body totally worn out, screaming WOOHOO! What a ride!

Personally, I don't think it'll be Tuesdays that are dropped....more like saturdays. And if this does happen I'll be let go. Not enough seniority. It is just bad timing with the economy. Even old-timers who are of retirement age aren't retiring. The P.O. isn't offering a big enough incentive. And these senior carriers are holding onto jobs that younger carriers could have(and not be let go). We have 22 routes in my office. Each 5 route 'string' has the need for a T6(floater position), who basically works every day off that each of his 5 route's regular carriers have. If they go down to a 5-day work week, there will be no need for any T6 position. So that is automatically 4 jobs gone. On top of that, we have these Flat sorting machines coming online in late '09 to early '10....and once these are working clerks will be let go as well.....and ON TOP of that routes are being walked and assessed as to there length. And routes are going to be adjusted and cut....just in our office alone if all these things go into effect - we will lose 7 carriers out of 26. And probably 2 clerks.

The mail volume is SO low that the Postal service has around 640,000 workers and is the second leading employer in the country. Not sure who the first is. And only enough work for 400,000. The Postal service will LOSE over 1 BILLION dollars in the month of May alone. Roll that around your tongue a few times.....

Roll that around your tongue a few times.....

damn this intranet and email stuff

They might start buy letting go of all the useless clerks that move slower than snail poop behind those counters. 4-5 people behind the counter, only one actually waiting on people, and taking her sweet ass time doing it, too.
