And there was never a time in his career that he could have sang Mother Father like Perry did in Houston 1981, EVER. Not close. He would have had to hit all of the high notes in falsetto.

Well, somebody has their "Fanboy" cap on. So "guy who sings notes the highest, the longest" is the lone criterion for "best vocalist ever"? Especially if they sound like shit when they try to sing low notes? You need a vacation from Perryland.

If you listen to RJD through the ages, from Elf through Rainbow, then Black Sabbath and beyond, you'll understand that the timbre and texture of his voice is one many other rock & metal vocalists tried to emulate (most of them were not successful). Dio can't hit high notes like he used to, but in his prime those notes sounded razor-sharp and very powerful, yet thankfully they lacked the thin/nasally nutless-wonder quality associated with a zillion other singers that sang in the uppermost register.

And sorry, Steve Perry couldn't sing songs like "Neon Knights," "Tarot Woman," "The Last In Line" in a mode akin to Dio's. SP's voice was never ballsy enough. His voice wouldn't work in that context.

BTW, Sammy Hagar is 62, I believe, (or will be a few months) and I don't know of anyone whose voice is as intact as his is. I think his tone has changed, but he can still sing anything he ever recorded pretty easily.

Lots of folks don't like his voice, but nobody can deny that the Red Rocker still "has it". I'd submit that Hagar has far more of his vocal chops left than do any of the singers mentioned in this thread so far.

Let's put things in their proper context:

Vivian (not Adrian — you're thinking of Vandenburg) was a nobody before Dio's band. Dio had been in Elf, which got him noticed by Ritchie Blackmore, guitarist for one of the UK's biggest rock bands (which he'd just left). Ritchie forms Rainbow with Dio, and agrees (at least for the first album) to bring in ALL of Ronnie's bandmates from Elf. It was a "deal or no deal" situation. Big single in "Man On The Silver Mountain." Rainbow goes from strength to strength, despite personnel changes, with Rising and Long Live Rock 'n' Roll, two totally amazing, symphonic hard rock-redefining albums. After Deep Purple, David Coverdale formed Whitesnake (which had Jon Lord, Ian Paice and Roger Glover at first), a band essentially along the lines of mid-'70s Purple till they called it a day the first time. However, Rainbow totally carved their own sound and were by far the better of two splinter groups.

Whitesnake did not become a "bigger band" than either Rainbow or especially Black Sabbath till they had their big singles in "Still Of The Night," and "Is This Love?" which was the clincher. Sabbath's Heaven & Hell was a bigger commercial success than the last one with Ozzy, though the Ozz-drones won't tell you that. Sabbath didn't really derail until after the Born Again tour with Gillan (their worst frontman ever). Dio started out his solo career with a trio of really strong albums. For all of Vivian's latter-day "I didn't really like being 'metal' back then" bullshit, he sure played his ass off on those albums! Chronologically, Whitesnake got "big" right around the time Sabbath had a low point with the Seventh Star project (not really a "band" album) and Dio had a record that wasn't as well-received as his first three. Musically, I don't think Whitesnake's repertoire stacks up against the last three Purple albums+Rainbow+Dio-Sabbath+Dio's first three or four solos.

With Hysteria, the Lepps became huger than huge for a while (too bad the album was their most commercial and pretty fluffy compared to the last two). The thing is Def didn't survive the '90s, while Dio and Black Sabbath did. Now back with his old bandmates, Dio and Tony, Geezer & Vinny are back to playing amphitheaters while Def Leppard's playing fairs and casinos along with BOC, Loverboy and Styx. Mention Def Leppard and you're liable to be laughed out of the room (unless, of course, you bring up High 'N' Dry and Pyromania). Btw, have the Lepps recorded anything that hasn't outright sucked ass since the '80s? Even Blue Oyster Cult has them beat!

Those who "don't like his voice" are ignorant or biased. I'm a longtime Samfan, and I have no qualms about stating that when it comes to vocal chops, Sammy handed Dave's ass to him. Sammy's one of my favorite all-time singers. He is one talented mofo and I couldn't believe how amazing he sounded on that Hallelujah! live CD a couple years back. Off the hook!

The Dave<>Sam comparisons (Cherone seems to have escaped the fracas) still linger. I don't get it. People purposely overlook that Sam had a career before AND after Van Halen (and now, a new band), while Dave's early solo career hit the curb after his momentum following 1984 petered out.

Whitesnake and Coverdale became famous because they had a hot girl(whom David was fucking) writhing on a car. While David continuously shoved and pumped the mic stand between is legs....he music was commercial at BEST.

i'm not sure that popularity is the best metric for quality in a rock band..sure DL was more successful than Dio, but the RJ career on his own is amazing, and for example Holy Diver, Sacred Heart, The last in line are just perfect albums, i respect and love more this records than the best effort from Whitesnake or DL ...(altough i love all this bands i mention)
