Pretty Cool SP/AP Video

Postby madsplash » Wed Jun 10, 2009 4:05 am

There are several of these "duets" on youtube that people have put together.

I know it's not really a competition, because it's not really fair to AP to do that to him and he does a great job, but SP's voice here is almost unhuman. The embellishment at the end by SP is just ridiculous. Again, Arnel does as good of a job as anyone can be expected to do, but this isn't a fair competition.

I reposted it. It loads slowly but it works. I think the link has a glitch, but it works. Try it again.

I think YT is just very slow loading today. I've had problems with other videos.

While I don't believe any singer can touch most of those songs the way Perry did them in his prime, I would never have put the Chile concert up there for the comparison. It was Arnel's first concert after being hired, and on a few of the songs in that concert he was flat from nerves and not his best performance on a lot of the songs. It should be the Revelation DVD DSB, b/c he was fantastic on that. Not Steve Perry, but still fantastic. And it was just his second concert with them.

That version of DSB form Tokyo is Perfect note for note. That concert was performed a week before MTV went on the air and Sony gave Viacom the video ten days later. It's an unfair comparison, Arnel can't touch it, no matter what version you put up against it.
When is there going to be comparisons of SP/ Deen? He is singing a lot of the fan favorites now and should be considered just as much a lead vocalist as AP is.

Actually, in this particular comparison Steve P comes out a little too soft voiced, while Arnel is really strong sounding. And yes, Arnel sounds ALOT better currently.

A couple songs a concert is not the lead vocalist, Gunbot. Much as you want to make something out of it.   It's much like Richie singing a couple songs with Bon Jovi. I'm glad they're doing it. I love Mother Father with Deen and Still They Ride and feel those songs are his, not Arnel's. I love his vocals on those songs.

Now, almost 30 years later, we are getting people saying how SP's voice is too velvety and lacks the power of AP's. That didn't stop millions of people from buying the albums though so it must not have been that much of a bother.
Has anyone tossed their original Greatest hits CD in favor of the Revelation two disc because of this purported lack of vocal power?

After the fall, Keep on running, and more to come. How many songs does Deen have to sing before he gets credit as a lead vocalist?

Can we please put a moratorium on vocal/lead singer comparisons? I mean, really. Haven't we beat this horse enough already?

Until AP actualy helps write a top 10 hit, these comparisons are nothing more than magic mic karaoke where we put scores at the end of the performance.

What I Needed, Where did I lose your love. Those are the songs AP should be measured by and in my opinion , he knocks those out of the park live.

soft-voiced? Perry's soaring vocals were effortless and just powerful enough to me, and not forced sounding reaching those notes. IMHO.

I don't even care if AP helps pen a top 10 hit. The comparison crap is just that, crap. I don't need to hear him or anyone else side by side to Perry to draw conclusions about quality, range, skill and talent.

That's why I mentioned the new material from Revelation. Those songs are what I judge Arnel by. just like I judged Steve Augeri on his own material. I don't care if Arnel sounds better on 'MARY HAD A LITLE LAMB". I want to hear new material, not comparisons with songs I bought 20 years ago.

Arnel is singing stepped down on the shows now, how can we do comparisons under those conditions unless we compare against a 45 year SP on his solo tour?

I realize you fulfill the role of Perry's champion against the rising tide of Plokkers, but let's be fair here: Texafana wasn't comparing Perry in his prime to Arnel, he was comparing Perry of late to Arnel.

Loons, SPoons, or whatever else they call themselves seem to have trouble drawing that rather obvious distinction. And therein is where Texafana has a point: Arnel pretty much kicks the [insert your word of choice here] out of modern Perry as we know it.

Of course, as I write this, I predict a backlash of people not being able to read or comprehend the difference, and more Perry worship will be espoused, which only encourages me to write more.

Such a vicious cycle.
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'
