Jimmy Barnes writing with Jon Cain

Postby kgdjpubs » Fri Jun 12, 2009 1:30 pm

next item to fall under the "who saw this one coming?!?"

For anyone interested, Australian hard rock singer Jimmy Barnes (originally the front-man for Cold Chisel, then later with a successful solo career) has been in the US recently writing for a new solo album. The back story to all of this starts in the mid 80s when Barnes attempted to break into the lucrative American market. The Cain-written "Working Class Man" became his signature song, and both Cain and Schon featured heavily on Barnes' subsequent Freight Train Heart album. For whatever reason, neither album failed to make an impact in the US, and with the exception of a re-recording of "Simply the Best" with Tina Turner several years later, Barnes went back home and basically stayed away from the American rock scene from that point forward. Despite the success of the FTH album in Australia, Barnes was rather vocal about his dislike of the co-writing, and the vocal production of Cain (enough so that the vocals were re-recorded when he went back to Australia before the release date).

To the surprise of many, in addition to co-writing with other people across the US, Barnes stopped in the San Francisco area to write with Cain again for a new solo album, scheduled for release later this year. For anyone interested, there is a pic of Cain and Barnes if you go to Barnes' official webpage, www.jimmybarnes.com, then news, then click under new studio album (no, there isn't a direct link).

Weird stuff...

Maybe they could do something with John Farnham now that he is back in the saddle. Cain will finally get a chance to work with The Voice.

Freight Train Heart was a fantastic album. One of the best melodic rock albums ever, in my opinion. Unfortunately, Jimmy Barnes has not come close to matching it with any subsequent albums.

I love Jimmy Barnes. Freight Train Heart is one my all-time favorites. Thanks for the head's up. I'll definitely be picking this up when it is released. It does seem rather strange that those two hooked up again because I recall that things were not great between them (as this article indicates) after the FTH sessions.

If you follow the multiple non-direct links to the picture page under the new studio album, one of those is the pic in question of the 2 in the studio.

ahhh. I thought you had copied it from somewhere. Checked out the photo of JB with JC. I would have thought he would hook up with Neal, not Jon as JB used to be a pretty hard rocker. Interesting. I might also have to get that live DVD. I only saw him live once and that was many years ago, but he's probably still pretty awesome.

This made sense to me since as I had never heard about JB's dissatisfaction with Cain...

Half of it is already available on Itunes as a charity thing. The new album--which is virtually the 1st half of the dvd--is probably the best thing he's done in 10 years, even though it's a bit different style. The live show seems to still be very good, although I don't think any of his solo bands have matched how tight Chisel was live in their prime. The only thing is--if you haven't heard him recently--is that his voice has changed quite a bit since the FTH days. His voice is a bit rougher, and his high range now is either there or not depending on what day it is. Rather strange since he will sound very good one day, and not so good a few days/weeks later. There's a ton of stuff on youtube to judge. I only wish I could have made the LA House of Blues show back in January. First show in the US since the 80s, and I have to be on the wrong side of the US...

Speaking thereof, you don't happen to know of any recordings made when Neal Schon did a few live shows with Barnes in the FTH era. Knowing the propensity of Barnes to rock songs up to their limit, and the general blues-influences hard rock of Chisel and the solo stuff, those should have been some special shows to see. It would be interesting to hear Neal's take on the Ian Moss guitar parts from Cold Chisel, especially as good as Moss is on a guitar. One would think as big as Jimmy Barnes was at the time that something would have been recorded, but never heard anything from it.

This brings back a memory - Was at a Bon Jovi concert at Shoreline Amphitheater must have been around 1987-88. For the encore out come Jimmy Barnes and Jon Cain to join in with JBJ and Co. With one opening scream, Barnes basically stole the vocal performance of the the night from Bon Jovi. Don't recall which tune they played/sang on. I am sure someone around here was probably at that show and has a less "foggy" ( )memory of the event than I do. 8)
