Lori Carpenter mentions Jon's piano problems on this taken from her Blog on the official Journey website

Wow! Huge crowd at Download again this year as Journey took their spot and time on the stage.

I don't normally write my 2 cents worth but it was really great to see them live via streaming webcast. Guys sounded amazing and really brought the rock to their show!

Neal was all smiles and having a great time-great to see as Arnel was rockin' and runnin' the stage and the crowd with his usual high energetic way. I have a slight understanding to what it takes to sing and perform and all I can say is Arnel is Super Human!

Neal mentioned he and Arnel were fighting colds last few days. Traveling the way they do with that schedule is crazy!!! I know, I did it all last year and I wasn't working. (I could write a book on that alone.)
They have been doing this how long now? I know people in their thirties who have a hard time getting up in the morn'

Neal also mentioned performing is the best part of it all and the easy part.

Was bummed out for JC as his piano was almost non-existent! Did not hear him too much with even his rythm guitar parts. But, he is loved and an amazing musician non the less. Perils of what I like to call the little "gremlins" that pop up from time to time from the road to mess with stuff. Fictionally speaking...

Deen! Smashing those drums and showing the new breed where it all started..he's the original. (I know about his double bass days!)

If they had a longer set, I know he would have done Mother, Father in a New York minute. But hey, so many bands, and only so much time. What a crazy big -a$% event!

Leave your reviews too and take of it all in Tour Reviews section.

Thanks all,
LC

Woof! That's a helluva crowd. Gotta be a record for Journey.

The website says Donnington Park holds 100k. I believe the main stage holds 80k, similar to JFK in Philadelphia and a little smaller than the RoseBowl.

On second thought, maybe that's why Jon looked pissed. He's not looking forward to visiting the peeps across the channel.

I spoke to Jonathan just before and just after the set at Download. He was happy, chatty and friendly. If he doesn't look that way on stage maybe he's just concentrating on the show.

Did he mention anything about the sound, if there were issues?

I think the piano was fine live - just not in the streaming video mix. Crowd went crazy when he started DSB so they could definitely hear the piano - anyone watching the live stream couldn't however. The only other thing I noticed is that they got off sync with the click track which was pumping in prerecorded keyboard and vocals for Change For The Better. They quickly pulled it out of the mix and the band finished the song completely live and did a great job. These guys are very tight and Arnel is really an amazing vocalist.

Arnel sounded like he was at about 90%. I think the cold hampered him from being at 100%. Anyone else notice that he fucked up the words to the second part of Separate Ways? They still sounded great and that massive crowd ate them up.

I did. They let me shoot the whole show. I tried to get some pics at the beginning of the set from behind the stage, while the other FORTY photographers were out front, but there was so much gear on stage and I was so far back that I couldn't really see anything. So I went out to the photo pit with everybody else.

Luckily it's a big area in front of the stage for the photographers so even with that many there we weren't too crowded. Unluckily, the stage is so high (way above head height), that I could just about see Deen from chest up and could only get full length shots when Arnel or Neal came right to the front of the stage.

After two or three songs most of the other photographers had to leave, leaving me and a couple of others (I guess big name press photographers) with the rest of the set to ourselves.

I took just over a thousand photos during that 45 minute set. I hope there are one or two decent ones among them, but most will be waist up shots, which isn't really the sort of photos I like to take. I'll have them online in a couple of days.

What did you talk about? Inquiring mind wants to know.

Stuff to do with the UK fan club. Also, we had quite a discussion about cameras. Jonathan is a keen, and very good, photographer himself, and takes a lot of photos on his travels.

As an aside, I'd just like to say that the roar of the crowd, from my position in front of them, was immense. Most of the front few rows seemed to be wearing Def Leppard t-shirts, and they were obviously holding onto their position for later on, but they absolutely lapped up Journey's set. Most of them were singing along to every song.

And a lot of these people were the sort of grungy, punky, hardcore, coverered in tattoos rockers that you wouldn't normally associate with a band like Journey.

He did say that they could hardly hear anything on stage, which made things difficult. However, the keyboards sounded just fine from where I was.

Dang, Arnel kicks ass on DSB in this clip. Mass energy. Right on.
Love the Youtube comments:

On AWYWI:
"Watch this and explain why Def Leppard closed the show".
"Best vocals of the entire show".

DANG STRAIGHT, YO!
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

Does anyone else think that this Download performance was a bit...painful? Just started watching AWYWI...and I couldn't even watch it all the way through.

Good to see the band getting an enthusiastic response from a potentially tough crowd though...

Wow Journey are amazing!! That kid got some good pipes!!

Jeez is there anything this guys voice can't do??

Hey does anyone really realize how great a voice Arnel Pineda has? It is absolutely great-pitch perfect, great tone, no straining. He is absolutely wonderful!

He just let out a very high note right at the end of that second song. I thought he was going to pull a LaBrie for a second. Lol.

Journey fuckin owns indeed. Wow. Really good stuff.

Yeah that dude is ridiculous - and to be able to run and jump around like that while maintaining his tone is insane.
