Arnels doing a fine job...

Those tearing him down cause they subconsciously compare him to Perry aren't being fair to Arnel... cause Arnel is no Perry... Perry was/is a "once in a lifetime" singer... Arnel is great but IMHO not in Perry's league... still no slight on Arnel... as I mentioned he's doing a FINE job...

Comparing Arnel to Perry... well that's like comparing Moses to God...

I agree. I think he's doing a great job singing that catalog. He's got a very powerful voice and in my opinion is the best singer they've had since Perry.

I know there are a lot of Augeri fans on here, and I don't want to make any of them mad, but I wasn't an active Journey fan during the Augeri era, so I never made the connection like so many on here did. If I had, my opinion may be different.

Some of the comments:

Wow, this guys voice owns...

Wow Journey are amazing!! That kid got some good pipes!!

Jeez is there anything this guys voice can't do??

Hey does anyone really realize how great a voice Arnel Pineda has? It is absolutely great-pitch perfect, great tone, no straining. He is absolutely wonderful!

He just let out a very high note right at the end of that second song. I thought he was going to pull a LaBrie for a second. Lol.

Journey fuckin owns indeed. Wow. Really good stuff.

Yeah that dude is ridiculous - and to be able to run and jump around like that while maintaining his tone is insane.

I don't want to stamp on anyone's buzz or anything...but Def Leppard fans are not exactly vocal connoisseurs are they?

Dream Theater fans, I think.

Ah...okay...that definitely gives those quotes a bit more credibility...even though I can't remember a single quality about the DT singer's voice. He HAS to be better than Joe Elliot anyway....

Dude those are just comments from real people...if you can't stand it you don't have to read it.

I don't know, he's damn close to being as good as Perry when Perry was Arnel's age.

I thought about this.... as good as Arnel is... Perry had/has even more facets to his voice..

Both had power.

I think Perry wins on nuance, phrasing.

I remember once Perry being called a "crooner" ala Sam Cooke, or the great singers of the crooner era like Sinatra, Martin, Darin.. etc... and when I think of Perry compared to those guys, I'm pretty sure he could hold his own with those guys... put Arnel in the same room with those guys... and for all his range and power...I don't think you get the same result. Perry simply has/had more facets to his voice...

Another thing that struck me is this... we really haven't heard the REAL Arnel... the one who has to invent memorable melodies and lyrics yet... so far he's been singing songs he's not really had much input into...

That's why I feel its SO unfair to compare Arnel to Perry.... because comparing Arnel to Perry means we, by default, compare Arnel to Perry's singing ability, and his the body of work he contributed to or did alone.

...and in my book there's simply no comparison, not because Arnel isn't talented - but because Perry is/was SO talented.

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

I remember one of Arnel's tunes on his old website; I think it was about a bird--anyway it was very pretty and I thought it was very good...

Did anyone else notice the guitar Neal had at one point in Marty's pics? Red and it looked like it was plated with silver or something and had a skull and crossbones engraved in it--just gorgeous! Is this one of his old guitars or something? He looks just great. I'm glad they're not covered in tattoos, also (I noticed Deen had a couple but it doesn't seem overpowering)--they are all about the music without any gimmicks... I had to chuckle at one of Marty's pics--the guy in the front row with his finger in his nose, lol!! Dang, how embarrassing :) ..

Thanks Marty--loved looking at these--there is one of Neal right in the center of the scarab--looks like he has 2 wings; loved that pic.

Well apparently not everybody got the message or else they will not make a comment like that.

And why you sound so negative, is it bad to get excited about this or you're bitter because it's not your preferred frontman who's getting the accolades? While fans of other bands are getting excited about Journey, there are a few people here who are obviously disappointed that the band is getting a second life with Arnel.

So predictable.

Tons of tattoos all over his arms, so I would assume elsewhere.

RE Ross and everyone saying he's thinner. He was ultra thin last year. I see no difference except he's a year older. And probably at his age being so thin makes him look sick.

Forgive me if I can't get animated about hearing a perfectly passable rendition of a thirty year old performance I've heard about half a million times. When Journey try something new with the arrangements and the set list I might feel a bit more positive about them again...

At least they played Change For The Better I guess...

I've actually gone to see Journey live with Arnel and he's pretty good. The show was a bit like one of those Broadway musicals about Frankie Valli or Queen...but entertaining enough.

As for Download...I've said already it was good to see the crowd getting into the set...but if you can't expect all of us to get actively excited because Journey played thirteenth on the bill and didn't bomb.

but of course, we all knew that we HAD to see Journey. we knew this was either gonna be really really epic.. or disappointing. what was it? FUCKING EPIC AND TIGHT AS FUCK! this was probably the tightest band of the festival as there wasnt one sour note at all, and the singer was absolutely unreal.

http://forums.downloadfestival.co.uk/tm ... 0&mpage=40

I'm not even a fan of Journey but they have been great, 100% better than the shambles Slipknot pulled out live last night.

Journey are quite clearly the ultimate sunny day festival band.

They're going over time a bit but **** me, ive been converted, Don't Stop Believe sent shivers down my spine haha

Journey should have headlined!!!

They were fantastic! Hope they do a UK tour soon!

Yeah I expected a wimpy wuss rock band, they were really good.

download_90Classic rock returns to Download!

While it’s great to see DevilDriver open up a circle pit that’s the size of a continent and Slipknot play a set that’s so ferociously heavy it makes you feel like you’re going to bleed from your eyes, getting to see real classic rock at Download is a beautiful thing.

If you’re in your early 20’s or younger, the chances are that you will have missed Monsters Of Rock and getting to see Journey play to a crowd who lap up every last second of their set makes up for that ten-fold.

At the end of the day, they play ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ and ‘Any Way You Want It’ one after another. If you can do that, you can’t fail and Journey don’t.

(Epic set, easily the highlight of my w'end. No denying the crowd love Journey and in turn Journey love each and every one of us. Not a dull moment in this set, thanks guys!)

Stuck On Repeat - What This Year's Download Festival Tells Us About The State Of Metal

Mike Patton himself recognised the weird pall of nostalgia hanging over proceedings: "This is like an '80s festival, right?" he asked the crowd at one point, acknowledging the battalion of weather-beaten classic rock acts such as Def Leppard, Journey and Whitesnake who dominated the weekend.

http://www.planetrock.com/News-150609-1.htm
The first true “classic” band of the day were up next in what was one of the most brilliantly scheduled and fun moments of the entire weekend. Journey’s place on the bill may have confounded some of the festival’s younger members, but by the time they had wheeled out their infectious pop-rock classics such as ‘Wheel In The Sky’ and ‘Stone In Love’ and closed with a double dose of timeless anthems (‘Don’t Stop Believing’ and ‘Any Way You Want It’) the whole crowd was singing at the top of their lungs.

http://forums.melodicrock.com/phpBB/vie ... &start=210

Marty Moffat:
As an aside, I'd just like to say that the roar of the crowd, from my position in front of them, was immense. Most of the front few rows seemed to be wearing Def Leppard t-shirts, and they were obviously holding onto their position for later on, but they absolutely lapped up Journey's set. Most of them were singing along to every song.

And a lot of these people were the sort of grungy, punky, hardcore, coverered in tattoos rockers that you wouldn't normally associate with a band like Journey

“Don’t Stop… Believing!” Hold On To That Feeeeeelin-ahhh”…

Sorry what?

Oh right.

If Tesla failed to excite (And they certainly did) then its safe to say Journey will be well received regardless of how they actually play. They could just take this one easy and…

JESUS CHRIST VAMPIRE HUNTER! This Man Can Sing!

If Tesla come across as a religious band then Journey could be viewed as closer to a religious experience. When Arnel Pineda became the new lead singer of Journey at the start of 2008 I heard a distinct under-current of racism from many classic rockers. Even at the gig itself mentions of the ‘Chink” singer could be hear.

At first.

Then he opened his mouth. Not happy with just singing well, this man has genuine power and an almost spiritual energy to his voice. You can’t help but listen in wonder. It helps when you open on ‘Separate Ways’. If Mr.Pineda is the shocker of the band then drummer Steve Smith is the bands secret weapon, playing clever engaging layers that adds much to songs like ‘So In Love’ and ‘Change For The Better’. Guitarist Neal Schon, on the other hand, is the bands Achilles Heel, insisting on playing lousy and sometimes oddly out of key solos while all the time looking severely .....

The highlight of this set and perhaps the whole night is the glorious ‘Wheel In The Sky’ which frankly I lack the english finesse to do justice. Lets just say if God formed a band he might cover it exactly as it was played on the 12th of June 2009. A rapture of a song and played as all music should be played, from the heart. Of course the anthems such as ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ and ‘Anyway You Want It’ are also very well received, the audience threatening to drown the band out altogether when asked to sing along. Huge, moving and unforgettable.

Journey Rating : 4.5 Speechless Racists Out Of 5

My comment: I thought Steve Smith left a long time ago?

AOR legends Journey gave the best performance of the night. It’s hard to believe that Neal Schon spotted vocalist Arnel Pineda on Youtube, singing covers of Journey songs. For a 41-year-old this guy showed more charisma and stamina than many other younger singers.

The set began with the familiar sound of the keyboards from 'Separate Ways' and the band were met with a deafening roar from the crowd. This new look Journey, showcasing the year – old album 'Revelation', were electrifying from the start.

The most memorable moment of the entire night came when the first few notes were sounded from the grand piano in 'Don't Stop Believing' as the roof was blown off the O2 Arena, only to be blown off again when the guys topped off an amazing set with 'Any Way You Want It'.

Journey on their own would have been worth the full asking price of a single ticket...simply awesome!

If imitation really is the sincerest of flattery then Steve Perry should feel mightily flattered. Arnel Pineda sounds so akin to his predecessor as Journey frontman that watching the band in 2009 can almost seem quite freakish.

Close your eyes and you could be back in the late 1970s with the band’s most famous singer rifling through the tunes which spawned a melodic rock legacy. Open them again and you see a pint-sized vocalist who makes Neal Schon look like a giant – Pineda’s not Perry but he’s every bit as good.

To see Slipknot devotees, Manson fanatics, Trivium buffs and Korn-hoodied kids bopping along to Don’t Stop Believin’ may have been a surreal vision but that iconic anthem, more than most, proves the power of rock. Bringing together fans from every spectrum of the genre we love, the famous track provided the perfect soundtrack to a sun-drenched Download. It’s impossible not to get carried away by Schon’s riff and that famous hook played on an imported red grand piano. The atmopshere was electric.

But for true Journey fans it got even better. Pineda excelled on Faithfully and wowed those present with his note perfect version of Wheel In The Sky – the first minor hit the band enjoyed within months of Perry coming on board and still a belter 30 years down the line.

What Pineda brings to the Journey table these days, however, is much more than the pipes to bring a sparkling back catalogue alive. He also provides the youthful exuberance his band mates just can’t offer after a lifetime knocking out songs and living on the road. As ZZ Top would prove later in the day you simply can’t by on musicianship alone at a festival demanding the highest standards. Energy is essential.

Wheel In the Sky is getting props...best version in my opinion.

From reading the professional reviews of the show, it sounds like ZZ Top was also big winner at Download this year. Kudos to them.

"Then comes arguably the highlight of the day. ZZ Top are living legends and it's far beyond me to work out why they aren't headlining. Nether-the-less this chunky afternoon slot allows for the audience to get off their heels, sit back and take in some of the best tunes in all of rock. The top boys may not be the most lively on the stage. Yet after 40 years on the road its commendable they're still on the road at all. So to see 'Sharp Dressed Man', 'La Grange' and 'Legs' (played on customised fluffy guitars) is a treat not wasted on this crowd. A final cover of 'Jail House Rock' rounds up a gig that will remain in the minds of many – as long as they've not had too much to drink by this point anyway."

"I know what you're thinking. What about Def Leppard's historic headlining slot? Hell, while we're at it, why not Steel Panther's triumphant UK debut, dude? Both great choices from this weekend's classic section, but if you wanted to see some real masters at work, ZZ Top was the place to be. The biggest beards in rock drew the crowds for classics like 'Gimme All Your Lovin' and 'Smart Dressed Man' alone, but what stood out wasn't just a case of nostalgia. After nearly 40 years together, ZZ Top have developed an almost psychic link between the three of them. The slightest move, from the synchronised guitar bobbing to Dusty Hill's cutting head shake during Billy Gibbons' solo moments, was executed with polish and natural subtlety - less a case of age, but knowledge of exactly how much was enough. ZZ Top's set was a testament to the power of what a three men alone can do on a stage, with no flashy gimmicks, no witty banter, no ego and no titties. Chinese military philosopher Sun Tzu said, "What the ancients called a clever fighter is one who not only wins, but excels in winning with ease." If that's true, then ZZ Top are the smartest band we've seen all weekend."

Did you find Only the Young or Wheel In the Sky? Susie thought WITS was the best of all of them and liked how they did it. I thought Only the Young was great also.

I'm still looking...you gonna like WITS, their best version to date.

I adore Perry's voice.
I liked Augeri's too - it's different but I still like it and Faith In The Heartland and Higher Place are two of my favourite Journey songs.
I had never heard of JSS but when I did, I liked him too.
And I think Arnel has a fab voice. I just hated how they sacked JSS and I hated that they got Arnel to re record some of the classics.

I didn't see them live here last year with Arnel but after watching him at Download I think he's doing a great job and was a very good choice.

Yeah that dude is ridiculous - and to be able to run and jump around like that while maintaining his tone is insane.

yes that guy's singing ruins this clip.

You can't hear how meaty it sounded.

It blew me away.
I don't know what they did to make it sound so much better because I was carried away in the moment, I felt I was actually there.

Great job Journey!

If the official clip of WITS makes it youtube, please lt me know guys!

On this one the vocals are more prominent and you can't hear the meaty sound.

I have to let Dan hear it. He missed it on the day because they kept showing highlights which didn't include it on the webcam on the day.

I'm sure it was tuned down. Neal was playing some seemingly quite dark notes during the song I thought. Thats the only thing I can think that they must have done. But wow didnt it work well!!!

Edit - and I HATE WITS, awful song. But that version is going to become one of my favourite songs of the moment.

Ive emailed the download customer services dept and asked them to include it when they post up the highlights later in the week.
I also asked why ZZ Top didn't let us see any of their set.

they'll probably ignore me but you never know.

I have to hear it again and we all need to hear it to work out what it was that made it sound so different.

No Faithfully was quite bad. But I dont want to make to many comments on it though because of the lack of piano, which I'm sure affected my listening pleasure of the song.
