OT- Bands That are "Influential" Or Classic...

Postby Schon Rules All » Sun Jun 21, 2009 7:35 pm

What are some bands that everyone knows to be huge or really succesful, everyone says there the best... blah blah blah that you just never got into??

I know a couple that come to mind immediatly-

Elvis (Always, always, always prefer "The Killer" Jerry Lee Lewis....)
The Beatles (I think they are stupidly overrated...)
Nirvana (Cobain couldn't string Schon's guitar... only talented thing about them was Dave Grohl)

Yours? Thoughts?
I want a new tour bus filled with old guitars...

Pearl Jam

Any group that became popular between 1990 and 1994 is pretty much out the window

Rolling Stones (I've never understood what the hell he's singing about)

Do you really not like Iron Maiden or is it their T-shirts that you see in the front row of every heavy metal concert?

Well, I was just referring to the successful part.

Okay. An influential artist, I would pick Elvis. Could care less, except a few songs.

For me it's Pink Floyd. Just never could get into them although some music I like.

I agree with U2 (sorry Jana). Some good songs but also feel they are over rated. I guess longevity counts

Say it ain't so, S2M and Rock N Roll.

But except for a handful of songs that I really like, I would agree on Rolling Stones, for me.

The Beatles...glorified elevator music. Same shit over and over. Fuck John Lennon.

Led Zeppelin...just can't get into those scratchy vocals. Songs like Kashmir and Stairway To Heaven are simply awful.

The Dave Matthews Band...warbling and yodeling songs doesn't impress me. One of the worst bands in history.

Bruce Springsteen...a vile, constipated, iron-throated piece of anti-American shit.

I guess you would have to own most of their albums to really hear their body of work, not just the hits and so forth. And the band really gives it their all in concert. Though, they're not everybody's thing, I know.

Yep, add Led Zep to my list too.

Oh and Janis Joplin.

I hate screamer vocals.

You two are brutal. Most of these people have put some great music in the world. Can't speak for DMB so much, but the others yeah.

Especially Janis. You guys forget, she's one of Perry's favorites. Sammy covered one of her tunes. I'd say she's earned her place. If you don't like Janis, listen to Joss Stone (if you can bear it).

Not a band but Garth Brooks. While he has some good tunes, I think the Garth phenomenon in the 90s was bad for country music. Became super commercialized to the point I can't listen to almost anything that's been released since. Few exceptions being Carrie Underwood, Martina McBride and Keith Urban.

Give me Dwight Yoakam, George Strait or Randy Travis over Garth any day.

I'll give you that. I never understood the craze over Garth Brooks either. I have never been able to listen to him.
Now then, Joss Stone on the other hand...hubba hubba... 8)

Ok if you don't care for the style of music he sang but Elvis had an undeniably beautiful voice.
This is a gospel song so if you don't like gospel...ok.....if you don't care for his inflections...ok...but you can't deny the quality of his voice....

This band was influential 'cause Ian can sing, play flute and and chew gum at the same time. :)

+1 I like my country music old school! One thing about Garth Brooks though the guy was a marketing genius. He took a very active role in how he presented himself and was very much in control of his music & career. He made a shitload of money and then retired. Sound like anyone else you know?
