OT: I had a nice scare

A few weeks ago, I was on my 24 foot ladder trimming my palm trees in my backyard. These trees have gotten huge since the eight years I planted them. The 24 foot ladder is barely tall enough to reach the fronds. I was reaching over my head to cut the frond with my reciprocating saw and it came straight for my head. I turned my head to the side quickly but the teeth on the stem sliced my ear open. I went to the doctor and she ended up having to put 6 stitches on my ear lobe. They also gave me a tetanus shot and six days worth of antibiotics. On the fourth day I started having ringing in my ears. I did some research on the internet and found out that this particular antibiotic can have a side effect of tinnitus.

When I went back to the doctor to have my stitches removed I told them about the tinnitus. They referred me to an ear, nose & throat doctor. He sent me to have my hearing checked. It came back stating that I have perfect hearing. His next step would have been two weeks worth of steroids. I declined and he said the next step would be to have an MRI. So I went and had a full brain and inner ear scan. The most indepth scan you can have on your brain. I had to lay down in the MRI chamber keeping my head perfectly still for an hour and ten minutes.

Got the results back a few days ago and the doctor's words were "perfectly normal." I said "Shit, that's a damn good machine. Because I wasn't perfectly normal before the scan."

Actually, he told me he wanted to have part of my brain removed......because apparently I'm too damn smart!

The ringing is kinda still there but at least I know it isn't anything serious. I was dreading hearing the results of that MRI. I just knew for some reason I'd have a tumor or something. It's an uneasy feeling having to wait several days for the results of something like that.

The power saw didn't cut me. The teeth on the palm tree frond cut me. That's the only way I can cut those pain-in-the-ass trees. That saw is heavy as shit. I have to use one hand to hold onto the ladder and the other hand cutting with the saw. I can only cut 3 or 4 branches at a time until my arm gets tired from holding that saw up in the air. Those fucking trees are gonna kill me yet.

I'm seriously thinking about going down to the local taco stand and hiring some illegal alien to cut those trees for me. There's plenty of them around here that would do it for next to nothing.

My dad was in a tree with a chainsaw and he fell.............so did the chainsaw! It barely missed him.............Why women don't do such stupid things.................duh! LOL! MRI's yuck. I've had two of my head over the years looking for stuff. I'm claustrophobic and spending over an hour in a narrow tube with a plastic hood device on my face that they use for some technical reason, while the magnets are banging away and not being able to move is torture for me. I just found out 2 days ago I need another one due to a back problem I'm having. Fun.

Glad you're all right Ken, next time hire a tree service. The money you will probably spend paying the coinsurance on the doctor's visit & MRI you could have hired someone. Just make sure they're insured.

CT Scans & MRI's are used for different applications depending on what part of the body you wish to visualize.

"CT Scan does not show you tendons and ligaments very well at all; at least not yet. MRI is the best choice for that. Tendons and ligaments around the shoulder and knee are best seen by the physics used in MRI. This is due to the density of the tissues that compose the tendons and ligaments.

Spinal cord is best seen by MRI for the same reason. The density of the spinal cord and the composition of it is such that MRI physics can show it to us much better than CT.

There are also reasons why CT is the exam of choice over MRI. It is the preferred modality for cancer, pneumonia, and abnormal chest x-rays. Bleeding in the brain, especially from injury, is better seen on CT than MRI. But a tumor in the brain is better seen on MRI.

If you've been in an accident, organs can get torn or damaged. CT shows organ tear and organ injury quickly and efficiently. Broken bones and vertebral bodies of the spine are better seen on CT but injury to the spinal cord itself is displayed on MRI far better than CT.

CT is far superior at visualizing the lungs and organs in the chest cavity between the lungs. MRI is not a good tool for visualizing the chest or lungs at all. "

I know what a reciprocating saw is ... the ex and I built one house and remodeled two others ... I know how to lay shingles, tape and float sheetrock, set ceramic tile, and do trim carpentry (power miter saws rock) ... but I would never touch the reciprocating saw ... things look evil, sound horrible, and weigh a freakin' ton

Man, that must have been some ordeal. Glad to hear you weren't seriously hurt or worse. Your story reminds me of the time I cut clean through the orange, heavy gauge extension cord that was attached to the hedge trimmer I was using. Sparks flew & so did I. Damn near electrocuted myself.

The chick that sewed me up was a physician's assistant. She was late twenties/early thirties. Blonde curly hair, and yes, she was cute. The other physician's assistant that took the stitches out was major hot. Brunette, green eyes and a body you could bounce a quarter off of. It was cool as shit because apparently the first blonde that sewed me up tied the stitches too tight. The brunette had a hell of a time cutting them out...so she had to get really close to see the stitches. I have no idea how I didn't grab a hold of her chi-chis right then & there.
