OT: We Are the World

I'm sure it's been posted before, but it's always worth seeing again:

Is this the only video that ever had Steve Perry and Michael Jackson together in it?

Wow, three amazing artists. I hope to see Loggins/Messina this fall. I was going to skip the show but MJ's unexpected passing shows that you never know when the they will come around again.
I saved the pic, Deb. Don't know if it was yours but I just wanted it for posterity's sake.

Best singers IMHO on that was MJ and SP. I didn't care for the MJ look though, with the floods and one glove. I think that one kid that came out in the 90's with his show "orkle" or some shit like that, got his look for the show from this video of MJ.

But that's the best head that he had. Man, later... whoo boy...
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

he wore that glove because the skin on his hand was changing; he didn't want the world to see how the disease had effected his skin and so he wore the glove to hide it.

What? I'm not making fun of MJ or anything.
That video has been up there since last year, and it jokes on all the people in it, not only him.

Just wondering, because if it was, then that dufus Billy Ray Cyrus doesn't own the copyright to it then. Although I'd rather him own it than SP, because I hate a mullet. But that might be because of BRC.

Steve Perry and Lionel Richie-

Postby ttango1 » Sun Jun 28, 2009 4:09 pm

I was thinking back to those days(I was in high school then, and I recall that someone had did an article, it was Life Magazine and I recall that the article talked about Lionel Richie receiving a call from Steve Perry.
So after looking for it, I found a link here:
http://steveperryfanclub.homestead.com/ ... eWATW.html

the whole article!

But I also fond a short synopsis so :

http://steveperryfanclub.homestead.com/Biography.html
If Only For The Moment

During Journey's extended hiatus in 1984-85, Steve was involved in the high profile USA For Africa project, organised by such industry heavyweights as Lionel Ritchie and Michael Jackson. Not only was Steve given the honour of being a soloist on the "We Are The World" single, but he also contributed a song to the project, "If Only For The Moment, Girl".

Manager Ken Kragen relates, ""Basically, I started at the top of the record chars and began making phone calls", he says. Steve Perry, lead singer and creative heart of Journey, came home to a message on his telephone answering machine. "Sign me up", he said."

On the evening of January 28th 1985, "Steve Perry, lead singer of Journey, hurries into the control room, peers through the window at Michael (Jackson). He asks, "Am I dreaming?""

The event affected Steve deeply. Life magazine reported, "Lionel Richie's house. Lionel has been sleeping since 10:00 a.m. The phone rings. It's Steve Perry, calling from his L.A. hotel room. Perry says he just had to call somebody. Lionel asks him what's wrong. Perry says that he slept well. He got up and ordered room service. They brought him breakfast. He sat down. He pulled the silver cover off the food. And then he started crying. *

The endeavour was rewarded not only by raising gratifyingly large amounts of money for the charity, but also with four nominations at the following year's Grammy Awards. Steve (and the others involved in the project) won all four categories in which they were nominated.

Then there is this statement right here from Lionel Richie:
http://www.spin.com/articles/inquisition-lionel-richie
What band would people be surprised to learn that you liked?
Journey. I mean, if I could add Journey songs into my show, I would -- but I just can't sing that high. Steve Perry used to make me absolutely sick with that Z flat he used to hit out of orbit. I just loved his voice. I love the band. I love what they were about.
Wow. So for karaoke, you're doing "Faithfully"?
Absolutely. And believe it or not, Guns N' Roses. I just love [the lyric] "I used to love her, but I had to kill her." I could be that guy, you know? Well, in the shower.
Pineda -"I'm just here to celebrate the legacy of Journey."

Since he played a musician in the Blues Brothers, he was a good candidate to represent the movie industry.

The wife and I went out tonight to do a little karaoke. Lot's of people were singing MJ songs and frankly were butchering them to no end. Not a good night down at the karaoke hole for sure. The last tune they did was "we are the world" and they had as many karaoke singers up there as physically possible to do that song. That tune was so unGodly butchered it was pathetic. Oh well, everybody had fun and got good ad drunked up so not all was lost.

MJ tried, but they insisted that they would only do it if they could also play their instruments while singing too. But MJ had those tracks laid already. Plus Jackson was never that fond of volume control knobs that go up to 11.

You're so right. It was so enjoyable, and I was thinking the same thing, finally videos all day on, gasp, a channel called VHI Classic. I remembered back when it was fun to go on any time of the day and check out the videos at some point.

Well, SJ, I have to respectfully disagree. IMO, Brother Ray (Charles) was the high point of this song. And don't get me wrong, you know my Loon cred is strong, but, you've got to give the devil his due.
