Thread ONLY for Perry Loons

Postby SP Fan in Oregon » Mon Jun 29, 2009 2:10 pm

O.K. I'm sittin here on a Sunday night at 9:02 p.m. wishing we could have a
thread with posts about SMFP that doesn't end up being locked. That is why the
thread is called, ONLY for Perry Loons, because anyone who wants to post derogatory,
nasty, inappropriate comments about the man are not welcomed. If you have nothing nice
to say, just read and refrain from posting. Thank you.

My Post..

I have been enjoying seeing MTV and VH1 play the We are the World Video. I noticed that
Steve was wearing a black outfit with a colorful vest over it in the video. It made me wonder if the yellow and red
colors in the vest were related to his Portuguese Heritage. Does any one know?

Lot of Perry during outtakes here. Watching Michael Jackson at 2:30

The original WATW vid. I don't see the vest you're talking about.

I always felt he got the vest from Willie Nelson...just a guess...

He had on a black trench coat...later you do see him with a colorful sort of Indian cloth.

Thank you. That was fantastic. I've never seen that before. You can see the ends of the colored cloth he's wearing
poking out from behind his black jacket

At 3:13 in this video you can see Perry wearing that colored cloth. It's got grey, white and black lines in it (not exactly the flag colors).
It is draped over his right shoulder in the group shot.

Ok, I see it now. Here's my take on it.

1984, his mom's still alive and it might be a gift from her so he wore it there to honor her.

Wow. I think you might be right again. I tried to look up on the internet whether the wrap is traditional clothing for Portuguese men,
and couldn't find anything. I did find out that the death of a parent is sometimes mourned for the rest of their life by wearing black. :(

I always assumed that it was some kind of african garb (IDK why, except that it was USA for Africa and he wanted to feel close to the cause :) ).

Those outtakes are great, SC. Thanks for sharing. It's neat to watch the progression into what eventually became the song/video. I also found MJ's participation there to be interesting. He always said he was shy, but he was such a larger than life character at that time that he could've just bowled over everyone. Instead he stayed back and to himself. Kinda sad in retrospect.

My 11 year old daughter discovered Cyndi Lauper because of watching the WATW video this weekend, and she LOVES her!!! She wants her hair... :? My 8 year old daughter loves SP as much as I do. I'll have to share this with them (during normal, waking hours! ) Wish I could sleep...

He's Portuguese right? yeah at the end of Separate Way (Live greatest hits) the thing at the end he says it in his native tongue? I take it that's where he is from, because his nose is a give away surely.

The pattern in the clothing makes me feel it was African in style. I think he wore it in support. I think someone stated this earlier, but I agree fully. :D

Without digging out that track...wasn't that the one recorded in Tokyo???? If so....no that's not Portuguese....my heritage is Portuguese and although I'm not fluent I do know some and I live in an area that is about 80% Portuguese.

I believe he was speaking Japanese when they were performing there. Or are you thinking of a different time?

The clip I've seen on YouTube is Japanese. I guess I'm thinking of the one you are.

during the MJ stuff, I saw a LOT of Perry from the We are the World deal.

I've been away a few days, has Perry commented on it at all? Only reason I ask is because he worked with him on that tune. I heard Darryl Hall talking about it on Friday and that was interesting.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

Carla, is that Portuguese? "Steve Perry is one piece of gorgeous man" or something similar?

That show is from the second night at Budokan in Tokyo and Perry is saying "Thank you from the bottom of our heart" or something along those lines. I have this on a boot DVD. Still she rides and Rubicon are on this disc also.
