Arnel seems to be a quiet reserved guy...put him onstage and he is unleashed...let him do whatever he is feeling.......run...jump...throw the mic...catch the mic...drop the mic....air guitar...jump some more...go crazy....

you want a stiff choreographed lead singer? What is wrong with everyone?

I hasten to say that Perry looked pretty goofy at times on stage. But you can't say that around here, so I'll just not say anything at all  8)

That said Arnel is an excellent singer and once he actually has songs that he has contributed to the group, he'll probably be more able to engage the crowd when it comes to talking about the origins of certain tunes or just other sings in general.

But Please Arnel, give up on tossing the mic. That was Soto's signature move, not yours. When you dropped it and had to chase it down last year at the Greek, it was comical but not in a good way.
You looked like a five year old kid trying to catch a bullfrog. Sitck to the singing part and you'll be alright.

Why is it only Soto's signature move and not Arnel's also? Who are you to say it's not his? I doubt Arnel even saw a clip of JSS there were so few of him on tour. Arnel was once asked by one of his fans how he never dropped it, and he said he's been doing that since he was young, which is very evident with the ease in which he does it. He didn't drop it in the concert I went to, nor in the hundreds of clips I've viewed. If he dropped it a lot, then I would agree.

Re your other opinions, I have no argument with those and pretty much agree with you for the most part.

Arnel is getting very comfortable on stage. I saw one of the youtube clips of him throwing his mic up about 20 feet in the air. Was it neccessary? Of course not. It was by all means ballsy though and the crowd ate it up.

I love Arnel's energy. I feel it's from the heart. If he's winded, that's when I want him to calm it down. I thought it was pretty interesting when he commented the other day in the Shoutbox that they had never tried to dictate to him what to or how to act on stage, and just let him be who he was. I thought that was nice. It would be nice if he communicated more, and I feel he will in time. But if he doesn't, I'm fine too.

Re Perry, I'll say it. I agree. It's endearing b/c I love him. But when I've shown people Escape Tour DVD, I can't tell you how many guys make fun of Perry's movements on stage. One guy I know said he and his then girlfriend went to a Journey concert and he was laughing at Perry's moves and his girlfriend at the time was in heat, drooling. That lock-kneed shuffle wasn't the best, no doubt, but it was his uniquely. On ROR the he had much better rhythm, in fact, great rhythm.

There are plenty of JSS clips, there are even complete Boot dvds of his shows with Journey. Fine, Arnel doesn't toss it behind his back and and catch it on the 360 spin like Jeff does so you're right. He's not copying Jeff. I see one guy singing for Journey do it and then the next singer is doing it, of course it looks like he's following the same routine. Intentionally no, He's not doing the behind the back, blind grab like Jeff does so it is a tad different.
I won't even debate about it anymore.
Ciao.

Yeah, I think the same could really be said about any lead singer who doesn't really have an instrument to play. I thought there were times when both SA and JSS looked silly as well. But I sure as hell am not going to judge them based on a 1 minute clip. Arnel brings energy and a showmanship to the concert. NS always looks like he is getting a kick out of him, so who cares. And I highly doubt someone is making the decision to spend money on the band (concert or music) based on a lead singer jumping around.

From most of the people I've spoken to, Arnel's energy is somewhat infectious and fascinating to watch. Particularly when you're aware of his background and the Cinderella "rags to riches" media blitz that the band capitalized on. Now, I'll be the first to admit that there are many, many times when he comes off as goofy or does a move that makes you go "WTF!" but every frontman I saw them with bar Augeri did that.

I realize everyone considers JSS the ultimate frontman, stagemaster, or whatever the hell else, and there is certainly a charisma about him. But the shit with his hands did get boring and monotonous; he'd go from rocking out to the interpretive dance to "Butterfly Kisses." And yes, the Houston DVD is frought with examples of Perry's goofy stage mannerisms.

Augeri is the only one whom I've seen live and on Youtube who didn't do anything obnoxious or distracting on stage, and I rather enjoyed how he was more focused on the singing than anything else.

So, suffice it to say that they've all done retarded things on stage, Arnel's hardly the exception. But for the most part, as with Perry and Soto, I find that he is an engaging frontman. Just different in methods. As Gunbot pointed out, he's similar in nature to David Lee Roth. But that's because he's obviously in better shape and more flexible than Perry, Soto, or Augeri. Let him do his thing.

Gunbot wrote:That was Soto's signature move, not yours.

Speaking of Rockindeano's Academy, is he handing out weekend classes to you, or something? I wasn't aware that Soto was the mastermind behind the microphone throw.

You're all nuts.

What!?! Nonsense. You can say it, as long as you do it respectfully. Now personally, I have always been of the opinion that Perry had/has two beautifully and intricately matched left feet. Mind you Pineda, Augeri, Soto, and possibly even Fleischman have all had great feet, but IMHO Perry's were both lefts...and that has made all the difference.

One of the tracks off Trial by Fire I've always liked. I'm thinking either the video and audio isn't in sync or Deen is singing along with Arnel at the end, because it's pretty evident about 1:15 that Arnel stops singing but the vocals go on. Not saying anything or accusing cuz you can't see Deen, and God knows there are a lot of sync issues with Youtube vids.

Very simple, the simple fact I actually laughed out loud when I saw the clip muted, that shouldn't happen. Arnel acts like a clown on stage, he looks absolutely and completely ridicules. Can't dance, can't work the crowed, and just looks self indulgent for the most part, in his own world. It's everything distant to what he should be, he's in Journey.

The simple truth is, you and the rest who replied are in denial.

Here's the problem. Every single singer Journey has had, and will have in the future will always be judged, being their shitty ability to command the crowed, broken English, who knows! but day in day, it's a proven fact - they should of never continued without Perry, plain and simple.

That's the truth pal, you want it, you got it.

If you're gonna talk about "broken English", be sure you know how to spell. Arnel has an excuse; English is not his first language. What's yours?

Jackass? that's very interesting, those are my thoughts on the current state of Journey, I am hardly a jackass, I am actually a pretty nice guy and will do anything for people, and friends. We are discussing music here, and the band members, that's what fans do - like and dislike, I just happen to dislike Arnel's stage ability's, But he's a great singer, just yells too much though.

+1 I love Steve Perry, but I have to admit when he was doing that little whirly twirly dance move of his, he looked pretty silly. I'm sure if you watched that with the sound muted you'd think he was a pretty lame performer. That's why you don't turn the sound down :!: What's the point of that?

Not by a longshot. Soto was never able to realize that he was fronting Journey and not Alice In Chains. While his stage command and antics might be good for a metal band, they were downright awkward and, many times, completely out of place with Journey. Behshad gave me a cool Talisman DVD and his stage presence is perfect for the music played.

If my life depended on it?, you may be surprised what people can do when their lives are at stake. The UK, well obviously it's where English was invented right? so you must be good :) my speaking English isn't half bad, for those who have heard me around here. I can spell just fine, when you are in a hurry and typing very fast, sometimes you don't have the time to correct it all (especially when people are ganging up on you) I'd like to see other people handle it quickly. So, I get by just fine, thank you :)

Jackass? that's very interesting, those are my thoughts on the current state of Journey, I am hardly a jackass, I am actually a pretty nice guy and will do anything for people, and friends. We are discussing music here, and the band members, that's what fans do - like and dislike, I just happen to dislike Arnel's stage ability's, But he's a great singer, just yells to much though.

How can we discuss music when your speakers are turned off?

Vladan wrote:Great. Well After watching this clip, I accidently had my speakers turned off... I came to the following conclusion. From best to worst front man - Now I am not talking vocals here either, I am talking the stage presence, commanding the audience and the moves, the dancing, working the microphone.

1. Steve Perry
2. Steve Augeri

And, somewhere in a galaxy far far away...

3. Arnel Pindea- just watch Arnel with the volume turned down, you'll see my point.

Not by a longshot. Soto was never able to realize that he was fronting Journey and not Alice In Chains. While his stage command and antics might be good for a metal band, they were downright awkward and, many times, completely out of place with Journey. Behshad gave me a cool Talisman DVD and his stage presnece is perfect for the music played.

I couldn't agree more. Exactly to the T how I feel. Excellent frontman for his type of music, but for Journey way too metal-like in many ways on stage. Just a bad fit, for my taste, with Journey frontman-wise.

Whine, whine, whine from a certain peanut gallery. Please, everybody speaks their mind. But some don't like the responses they get and play martyr. I've been on here almost a year. I try to be respectful of everybody's favorite, but I speak my mind, for the most part, and I've been taken down plenty of times in the poliical thread, or re Neal, re Arnel, re Journey, re everything. For a while I could barely mention Neal's name without an influx of shall we say people who aren't fans of Neal. I didn't whine. Well, okay, maybe sometimes. I don't play the martyr. If you can't take the comments, why post? I don't whine about it. I don't expect everybody to agree with me on this perry/sa/jss/ap/neal hating/neal loving/journey hating/journey loving forum, and if I did, I shouldn't be here.

Huh? Do you even realize that a ton of Perry fans back in the day thought he looked VERY female on stage and did NOT have a good stage presence? Hell.. I remember watching videos thinking he had to be gay, but I didn't give a fk, the band sounded awesome. I'm sorry but to alot of peeps I've talked to over the years, Perry's stage antics were always rather geekish. Granted he eventually man'ed up a bit from Escape onwards, but overall Perry is/was never a great "showman" on stage imho. And we didn't give a crap...because when he opened his mouth to sing...it didn't matter.

The lead singer for Journey commands the crowd by vocal ability first, stage antics...a very distant 2nd.

I'm not going to argue that Arnel sometimes looks like a hamster in a cage running around, but my point is, it's Journey...at the end of the day...it's 99% vocal ability, the other 1% for stage antics (if any) is a nice bonus.

When I saw SMFP in Ft.Worth on his solo tour, I thought he did a great job on stage. Basically just bobbing to the music and singing his ass off. Virtually no stage presence at all. But no one cared. Hell....he performed with his back to the audience through almost the entire first song. lol...

Yes, I see - I guess your opinion may change after a few years Jana... give it a couple more months, years posting here :) But yes, I agree with you Jana.

MR is much better than most other places, probably the best forum around for discussing Journey. I can't the say the same for "the other forum", but this one is pretty good. Yes, I know what you saying, but something I do not do around here, and it's something I learned in real life and I practice here.

If somebody doesn't like something about a band or a movie or whatever? you know "who am I to say otherwise", like that's their opinion, let it be there's. It should be said once, and heard, then not discussed (of course we all do it) it's very hard not too. When a MR members says "hey Steve Perry sounded awful then, or looked silly then" I just sure, he probably did, and move on.

This discussion should of never gone this long, it's been dead for days in my honest opinion, I said my originally piece, I should of just left it there. Next time I will know better, not to come back, and wait for people to sit there and dissect my posts and call me on spelling errors, and insult me personally.

Thanks.

Yeah well there is a happy meduim if you know what I mean....some people feel the need to disect posts and just be plain nasty....it's not needed or necessary. Jana you are one of the ones who at least respect that people have opinions...and I respect you for that...you do not post as if your opinion is the only one that matters here.

It is very unnecessary, and makes people look desperate and inexperienced in my opinion. It's something people can get away here, but you start doing that in real life, people get nastier right back at you, and it's not fun anymore.

Totally mate, I agree Perry wasn't perfect, and there you have it. You said Perry was never a great showman, may of been gay, that's fine I can see how that's possible, and I said the same for Arnel, I guess that's how we feel. Great, thanks for your thoughts! I read your post, cheers.

Well that was a rather sudden heel turn, Vlad.

This is the problem. You sauntered into this thread making observations about Arnel's showmanship relative to the two Steves and Jeff Scott Soto. That's fine, though I disagree with your conclusions. Where you fucked up (and you did so quite elaborately) is when you came back to this thread and said shit like this:

Vladan wrote:The simple truth is, you and the rest who replied are in denial.

Vladan wrote:That's the truth pal, you want it, you got it.

Vladan wrote:but day in day, it's a proven fact - they should of never continued without Perry, plain and simple.

Vladan wrote:so I couldn't bothered going back and forward, let's just say I am right... and we can move on

These are the problems. Who the hell are you to say that "lulz it's a proovin fakt!" that they should have never continued without Perry? And now, predictably, you were crushed and you changed your tenor all together.

Make up your mind. I'm not certain if your girlfriend hopped on your account or if you're heavily medicated and just looking for the right dosage, but the fact of the matter is you tried to make a subjective argument and declare it fact without elaboration or evidence. That is bullshit.

Suffice it to say: you're wrong, you made yourself look like a jackass, and that is why everyone was laying into you.
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'
