The problem does not lie in what he can or can not deliver. The problem lies in "asking for" and/or expecting a specific level of quality. Who cares if he "can top himself" or "match this or that performance". Plenty would simply love the chance to see him perform. I never had that chance, and I would love the opportunity. If he walked out onto a stage and didn't hit this or that note, I'm honestly NOT going to give a damn. It's about so much more than that.
And yes he does blow Arnel away, even on his "worst day". Arnel can leap around and put on a huge bright smile and get everyone excited. He's a good showman and he can emotionlessly parrot what is on the records so that the fans get to hear what they are used to and what they expect. That's what Arnel is good at -
VERY good at - and that's what Journey needs.
That crowd is not made up of die-hards. The majority is casuals and back in the day hard cores who want to hear the same DSB and Separate Ways and Open Arms that was playing when they were feeling up their sister's friends in the garage.
Perry, at least the last we saw of him performing, gave the same emotion he always did, and also gave, as he always did, something considerably different than what you hear by spinning
Greatest Hits over and over. And even if by some people's standards it wasn't "the best", at least it was
not fake and repetitive.
